Foto: divulgação Even though many people are only thinking about spending New Year’s Eve on the beach, some are keen to enjoy the Northern Hemisphere’s sea of snow — or even to plan next winter holiday in the Southern Hemisphere. TAM Nas Nuvens has put together stories of three different experiences on three ski resorts in three continents: the very close Petta family has tried the trails of Andorra, Europe; Cindy Wilk went back to Vail, in the U.S.; and Daniel Nunes Gonçalves has chosen Portillo, in Chile, for his debut on blades. He was five when we first took him skiing on a tiny little mountain in Spain. I didn’t have the slightest idea of what was going to happen. On the first day, my wife and I gave him lessons. On the second, we hired an instructor. On the third, Tiago was already skiing the blue slopes better and faster than his mother and I. On the fourth day, we left. A year later, when Tiago was six, we decided to take a serious skiing trip. On recommendation from some friends, we opted to go to Andorra, a small country (a principality, really) carved into the highest peaks of the Pyrenees, between Spain and France. fotos: carolina da riva Tiago, meu filho, tem sete anos. No quarto, fomos embora. It was even better than we imagined. With the ski pass that we bought (five non-consecutive days: 197 euros, skiandorra.ad), we had the right to ski the 120 miles across 110 trails at Grandvalira, as well as the 61 miles and 69 trails at Vallnord. A world covered in white experienced via a state-of-the-art lift system with no lines, in the middle of January, at the peak of the tourism season. “It’s always like this here,” says Etiene Del Piano, our 55-year old Italian ski instructor who’s lived in Andorra for the past 10 years. Each one of the resorts has its own charm. At Grandvalira, in the Soldeu section, you can enjoy the view from the French side of the mountains; in Grau Roig, and you can ski through forest glades; in El Tarter, you have an igloo-bar where you can go for drinks. In Vallnord, the Pal section is perfect for adult beginners and children. The experienced skiers should head to OrdinoArcalís, our favorite, not for the required ability (of which we had little), but for the beauty of the mountains (of which there is plenty) and for the positive vibes at lunchtime at the Free Riders spot, with a DJ playing good music for resting good-looking skiers. Our daily routine consisted of getting up by six in the morning, breakfast at seven, and by the time the lifts opened at eight, we were dressed and ready to ski and enjoy making the first tracks in the day’s fresh snow. The end of each day, which always came at five o’clock when the lifts shut down, was even more delightful. First things first, and that is taking off your ski boots — an act that represents a certain kind of ecstasy if you’re a skier. Afterwards it’s hot chocolate for the little guy and a cold beer for dad. And finally: the pleasure of dezembro december 2011 131 especial esqui esquia. 132 tam nas nuvens ski special relaxing in the hot tub at the Acta Art Hotel, followed by a dinner so delicious that it makes you want to cry and beg for more. Speaking of relaxation, for those who wish to get to know a bit about life off of the slopes (after all it only takes 52 minutes to traverse the 20 miles between the two farthest points in Andorra), you can visit the Seven Parishes, the medieval villages with houses and little stone churches erected in the Roman-gothic period (between the 11th and 15th century). It’s so big that it has four base villages — Vail Village, Lionshead, Cascade and Golden Peak — spread around the foot of the massive peak, and connected by a tangle of trails, serviced by an efficient system of gondolas and chairlifts. It’s so large that, in North America, it is second only to the Whistler in Canada. If you added the skiable area of the four resorts around Aspen together — Aspen Mountain, Buttermilk, Snowmass, and Highlands — it would still be less than fotos: cindy wilk Vail, no Colorado, é a maior montanha esquiável dos Estados Unidos. And that’s without including Beaver Creek, just 10 miles away, which alone is larger than 70% of the mountains in the area. However, all this means nothing to someone who just started skiing or snowboarding. It’s like having the whole ocean in front of you and only being able to wade in up to your ankles. That was how I felt when I arrived there for the first time at the beginning of 2006. I hopped on the Eagle Bahn Gondola and headed up at Eagle’s Nest, and I could have stopped myself from going beyond Adventure Ridge, a type of all-ages, beginners’ playground. But I pushed forward and discovered that there were so many other novice circle slopes spread out in all directions that a rookie could ski there for a week and not get bored. My best achievement was going all the way up to the Mountain Top Express Lift, at an altitude of 11,520 feet, and from its peak you can see the other — and much more challenging — side of the massive mountain. Stretched out before me were the infamous Back Bowls and Blue Sky Basin, which I had heard so much about in my evenings in the hot tub, a common amenity in most good hotels, where skiers of all levels can take a dip together. It’s the end of the season, the beginning of April, and the conditions are excellent: there are less people to compete with for the lifts and there’s still perfect snow. The city is bigger and super high-tech. There are tons of interesting things, like an app called EpicMix that traces your day’s journey around the mountain and publishes it on social networks. Downtown Lionshead, erected around an ice-skating rink that was in construction the last time I was there is very “last winter.” The new in thing this year is Solaris, in Vail Village, a group of condos also built around an ice-skating rink and replete with cool spots — and it’s there that you’ll find the recently-opened Nobu; Bowl Vail, a trendy bowling-restaurant; and CinéBistro, where you can catch a good flick and enjoy a typical Colorado leg-of-lamb at the same time. On the eve of its 50th birthday, the small town blew up. To me, in just five years, it wasn’t the city that grew, it was the mountain. Adventure Ridge became child’s play and I managed to explore each little bend where the blue slopes (intermediate) led me. I visited the restaurants that were always there, but I hadn’t discovered before, and finally, a whole new world, the other side of the mountain. It was hard to get there, more than half an hour of lifts and gondolas — but it was worth every minute: Blue Sky Basin is packed with long, wonderful blue slopes with hardly anyone on them. You just have to take your first fall: first, you realize that you’re only at the very beginning of this difficult journey; and then right after, you fall, literally. Once, twice, ten times. In my case, six times just in the morning of my first day. But I was there to make a fool of myself learning to ski, in a basic class at the Portillo Ski School, which has seen many people fall since the resort was built by the Chilean government and opened in the 1940s (later bought by Americans in 1962). Lesson number 1: let go of your shyness. E me questionava: quando vão me deixar subir no teleférico e esquiar lá no alto? like a duck. Or maybe a penguin, or a monkey — in the end, every creature from the animal kingdom will be represented by life-sized models on the slopes of El Corralito, which is filled with children. The ramp in front of the door to the depths of the hotel is some type of childhood garden which also suits man-children like myself. The second lesson was obvious. “Straighten your back, look straight ahead, bend your knees, relax your shoulders,” said the instructor. Doing all this at the same time isn’t so easy… I needed to imitate the children, who aren’t afraid and for the sake of fun jump in headfirst. I rented all the necessary equipment the day before, a Saturday, when the weekly rental packages start. But I was only going to stay for four days: as Portillo was halfway between Santiago and Mendoza, Argentina, this was only a quick stop on what was otherwise a Latin-American wine-tasting vacation. At practically 10,000 feet, the altitude made me dizzy, breathless after ascending a staircase, and I decided to take my first afternoon to rent skis, boots and poles and get to know the hotel. I wanted to discover some hideaways in the event that I decide that skiing isn’t for me. I found a pool, a sauna, yoga classrooms… I also took advantage and hired some instructors — I would take three group classes and one private lesson, with free time left over to practice on my own. The pressure was high for that first class on Sunday. With ideal weather conditions — a blue September sky, 8 a.m., 40˚ F, the sun was gently shining, and a three-foot snow base — I envied not only the unafraid kids who flew by within a inch of me on the El Corralito slope, but also the colorful ballet that I saw from blue, red, and black slopes on top of the mountain, where even the professional skiers from the American and Canadian ski teams blazed by. And then there was me, falling, picking myself up and patiently learning the art of braking and turning. And I thought to myself: when are they going to let me go up the lift and ski those trails? On the second day, I had two pleasant surprises: I was promoted to the La Princesa slope — where, instead of using a slow escalator like the one at El Corralito, I went skiing up using a tug lift called Va et Viente until I was able to make it down the steeper slope, skiing the whole way — and was invited to the Tio Bob restaurant at the peak. And to get there, I would need to go up on the chairlift finally. “Portillo is a great small, family resort, and it will stay that way,” says owner Henry Purcell, whom I met in the restaurant. “In order to guarantee quality service, we don’t want to grow.” Purcell’s statement was a response to those who complain that, unlike other ski resorts, Portillo doesn’t have a bunch of modern buildings, a thousand slopes or an urban center where you can party. But the proposal of that sort of yellow transatlantic ship docked in the enormous white expanse known as Andes is just that: dezembro december 2011 145 especial esqui SERVIÇO INFO PANORAMA / OVERVIEW Portillo concentra suas 30 pistas, acessíveis por 14 meios de elevação, no entorno de sua única base, o Hotel Portillo, a 2.880 metros. When they return to the slopes, skiers are met with incredible outdoor heated pools, right in front of the frozen Laguna del Inca. At the two restaurants, guests sit at the same tables and are served by the same waiters for every meal. They eat a lot. And they eat well. It would be a cruise ship if it weren’t for the lack of ocean and casino. I finally reached the Promised Land on my last day. The instructor deemed me capable of taking the chairlift up again and trying my luck at the hardest green slope on the mountain, El Puma. This time I made my way down scared out of my wits, but I straightened my body, controlled my speed, and did the zig-zags just right — however, I must confess, I did take one last fall. But with the shamelessness typical of a child, I got up and continued going down, unabashed, feeling the wind and the ecstasy of surfing an ocean of snow. I threw off my Robocop outfit and relaxed with my feet free of the ski boots, feeling the warm water of the pool in front of the lake. For dinner, of course, I toasted the success of my skiing debut by enjoying what I had originally set out to do: drink some good Chilean wine. / Portillo has 30 slopes, accessible by 14 lifts from the surroundings of its only base, the Hotel Portillo, at an altitude of 9,500 feet. Alcancei a glória no último dia. O instrutor considerou-me apto a pegar o teleférico novamente e descer esquiando a pista verde mais difícil, a El Puma.
