Contents
The syllabus of Seminar/Project in Human Geography is organized as follows:
(i) Research in Human Geography: issues, theoretical perspectives and methods
(ii) Construction of a research project: the research question, theoretical framework and
hypotheses
(iii) Strategies of analysis: methods and techniques for gathering and processing information
(iv) Planning of research activities
(v) Development and implementation of the research project
(vi) Communication and presentation of results
Objectives and skills
 Designing a research project in human geography: questioning and problematizing.
 Develop the research project: organizing and analysing.
 Critically reflection on the various research stages (theoretical perspectives, research
methodologies, practical research).
 Develop, discuss and apply the fundamental concepts of geography.
 Understanding the link between the various geographical scales in the territorial changing
processes.
 Develop an integrated territorial perspective.
 Adapting the methods and techniques to different perspectives and geographical problems.
 Collect, process and present geographical information.
 Mastering the methodologies and techniques of fieldwork.
 Use the appropriate methods and techniques for communication of results.
 Promote team work: task planning and collaboration.
 Report adequately the results of research and discuss presentations of other colleagues.

Knowledge evaluation methods and their partial grades
The evaluation of the seminar is composed by the following elements:

Report (600-800 words) – Definition and explanation of the research question: 10%

Oral presentation (15’) – Problematization: 10%

Report – literature review (2000-2500 words): 20%

Oral presentation (15’) – methodological plan: 10%

Oral presentation and discussion of the work: 20%

Final report – rules of Finisterra article (6000-8000 words): 30%
Students of special regimes:
Due to the nature of the research seminar all students are required to accomplish the same
elements of evaluation.
