Dear Parishioners,
Sacramental Information
Baptism
In today’s second reading, Saint Paul posed the question to the Romans, “If God is for us, who can be
against us”? Abraham must have wondered whether
God was for him or against him when he was instructed
to take his son and go to the land of Moriah to offer sacrifice. Becoming a father was the answer to prayers
that Abraham had offered for more than 80 years.
God heard Abraham’s prayers and gave him a son
when he was almost 100 years old. Now that same God
was asking the gift be returned. Abraham is rightly
called our father in faith because he does not doubt,
nor does he question. He faithfully sets out to do
the Father’s will, no matter how much it will cost
him.
Pleased with Abraham’s display of faith, God sends an
angel to stop the sacrifice, and Abraham is forever
blessed for his faithfulness.
Stories such as those in the Old Testament are key
to a better understanding of the events that would
later unfold in the New Testament.
Abraham’s willingness to sacrifice his son Isaac on
Moriah is unmistakably connected to God the
Father’s willingness to sacrifice his only Son, for
our salvation, at Calvary.
That sacrifice was foretold by Jesus three times before
it actually came about.
The first time he does so in the Gospel of Saint Mark
occurs shortly before this passage about the Transfiguration. Though Jesus spoke of death, he also promised
that he would rise on the third day, but the resurrection meant nothing to his disciples at the time. They
knew only that their master was going to die and they
could not do anything to stop it.
The Transfiguration, in effect, is about the deeper
meaning of the life and death of Jesus. It was to
bring about new life.
Contact the Parish office to arrange for baptismal preparation. Baptisms are celebrated monthly except during Lent.
Spanish Prep Class: 1st Mon at 7 pm; Baptism: 3rd Sat at 10 am

Arrangements need to be made at least six months in
advance. Call the Parish office.
Rosary
The Rosary is recited daily after the 8 am Mass and
before the 5:30 pm Mass on Tuesdays and Thursdays.
The Hispanic Community has a Rosary Hour every
Monday at 6 pm in the Rectory Chapel.
At the Transfiguration, the Apostles are privileged to
receive a glimpse of how Jesus will appear in resurrected glory. Although they are amazed and terrified at the
same time, the presence of Moses, the patriarch, and
Elijah, the great prophet, assures them that Jesus is
the fulfillment of Old Testament prophecy.
God speaks from the heavens just as he did during the
baptism of Jesus. He tells them, “This is my beloved
Son. Listen to him”. The Apostles may still not fully
understand who Jesus is or what he is about, but there
is no doubt that he is God’s son. Their faith is
strengthened and the long way of the cross, the journey
to Jerusalem, continues.
As we continue our journey through this Lenten
season, we seek transformation – conversion. The
Apostles’ perspectives on their life and mission changed
completely during their time atop Mount Tabor. We
pray that our life and sense of mission may be
strengthened by our Lenten observance.

Growing Spiritually During Lenten Season
by Paty Rascon
We think that Lenten Season it is only about
penance and sacrifice, a custom we Catholics
have, not thinking of the real meaning behind
this behavior.
If we want to grow spiritually during the season we
should start with the big picture: Easter - the Resurrection of the Lord. We need to ask ourselves how we want
to feel on Easter Sunday. How close we want to be to the
Resurrected Christ.
The good news… we have 40 days to get there.
RCIA News......Rite of Sending/ Election
This past first Sunday of Lent, we celebrated the Rite of
Sending, formally asking the Church of St. Clare to
accept our catechumens as members of the Elect—
those chosen by God for baptism—and to pray for our
candidates’ continued growth in the Spirit. Then, on
Tuesday, they journeyed to St. Joseph's Cathedral to
celebrate the Rite of Election with our Bishop Patrick
McGraw.
Lunar New Year Celebrated
Let us give thanks for our health, our family, our
community, and our friends.
Let us live each day in the most loving ways.
Let us be Silver Boxes to one another.
Let us serve those in need.
Let us keep Christ in our hearts and each day, let us
remember that we are all one, many parts – one body.
St. Clare School held its annual celebration of Lunar
New Year on Tuesday. The event began with prayer led
by Fr. Carlos Olivera, Pastor of San Jose Chinese
Mission. Student storytellers, speakers, and dragon
dancers delighted us with their colorful cultural dress
and traditional stories. Students presented lovely flowers
and traditional lucky money envelopes which contained
lottery tickets to the clergy, teachers, faculty and staff.
We thank the students and parents for their generous
gift of time. The tradition will live on for many years to
come. May the upcoming New
Year fill your lives with God’s love
and peace.
Sincerely In Christ,
Madeline Rader, Principal
Lenten Virtual Operation Rice Bowl Cooking Club
Have you ever enjoyed the recipes on the CRS Lenten Rice Bowl? Consider cooking one each week for
your family and sharing your experience with the Social Justice Committee.
Email Sigrid Jacobsen at [email protected] to sign up. You’ll be invited to view a blog that includes
the recipe for the week and posted images of the finished dishes. This is one way to grow in solidarity with our brothers
and sisters around the world. All recipes are vegetarian and include a story about an individual that is supported by a
Catholic Relief Services program in that country.

Rice Bowls
These are available at the church entrances. This is a
great Lenten practice of sacrifice and offering. All monies
collected go to Catholic Relief Services.
Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament
Visit with the Blessed Sacrament every Friday in the
chapel, 8:30 am to 5 pm throughout Lent. Sign-up sheets
are in the church vestibule and we encourage you to
sign up for an hour or more of Adoration.
Stations of the Cross
Walk the Way to the Cross at 6:30 pm in the church

Sacrament of Reconciliation and Exposition of
the Blessed Sacrament
On Wednesday evenings, two priests will be available to
hear confessions from 6:00pm to 8:00pm. Fr. Tad and
Fr. Pedro are asking parents to bring their children to the
church on one of the Lenten Wednesdays to receive the
sacrament. This would be a good time for the family to
celebrate the sacrament together.

Scripture Readings
for THIS Sunday
First Reading: Genesis 22:1-2, 9-13, 15-18
Psalm: 116
Second Reading: Romans 8:31-34
Gospel Reading: Mark 9:2-10
“This is my beloved Son. Listen to him.” And listen they
did. From that moment on, Peter, James and John were
ardent followers, forsaking everything to follow in their
Master’s footsteps. Like the psalmist crying, “O Lord, I am
your servant,” the three disciples committed themselves
to lives of incredible hardship and indescribable joy. After
that day on the mountain, they never again wavered in
their chosen vocation.
Though our tests may not be as severe as Abraham’s
and our peak experiences not as dramatic as the Transfiguration, we all face the daily challenges of walking
“before the Lord in the land of the living.” As we follow our
varied calls to love and serve, let’s be comforted by
Paul’s reminder to the Romans: “If God is for us, who can
be against us?”

no Seu Reino.
Deus. Nas Quartas-Feiras e Sextas-Feiras que façmaos
prepósitos de visitar o Senhor Jesus no sacrário. Perante Ele
professores, sacerdotes, etc. Que seja Ele a nos alimentar com
a esperança de ultrapassar as doenças, as fraquesas de
espírito, as tentações.
Programas Espirituais desta Quaresma
As regras deste
Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.
