PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE 2007-2009 Executive coordinator of LIFE-BIOMARES (LIFE 06 NAT/P/192) CCMAR Centre of Marine Sciences Universidade do Algarve, Faro, Portugal 2001-2006 Post-doctoral Fellowship Grant Awarded by FCT Foundation for Science and Technology CCMAR Centre of Marine Sciences Universidade do Algarve, Faro, Portugal During this period developed the following actions: Collaborated in the kick-off of the project LIFE - BIOMARES (LIFE 000192/NAT/PT) (2006). Coordinated of the process application to the LIFE program LIFE06NAT/P/000189 – with the proposal “Integrated Management and Conservation Plan of Ria de Alvor” - not awarded (2005). Initiated a research line about the influence of seagrass habitat fragmentation on bivalve larvae settlement in Ria Formosa and on Zostera noltii flowering rate (2004-2006) (one ms submitted; a second ms in preparation). Collaborated in the study “Patch dynamics and response to disturbance of the seagrass Zostera noltii of Ria Formosa”, supported by the European project `Monitoring and Managing Seagrass Beds” EVK3-CT-2000-00044. The main objective of the project was to build a plant growth model based on the analysis of patch dynamics and estimates of growth, in order to develop a seagrass conservation management tool for the Natural Park. The project evaluated the effects of different sources of disturbance on the temporal and spatial changes of Zostera noltii, a seagrass abundant on the intertidal flats of Ria Formosa. Major broad scale disturbances investigated were natural sediment dynamics and dredging of channels and inlets. Fine scale disturbances included clam digging by fisherman. Spatial analysis tools based on remote sensing and geographic information systems were developed to analyze patch dynamics and its relationship with disturbances (2002-2004) (One paper and three book chapters published; a second ms accepted; a third ms in preparation). Mapped the seagrasses and macroalgae beds of Rio Arade, Portimão, Portugal for the Harbours Maritime Authorities (2005) (A vegetation map and a grey report produced). Grants Proposals • FCT / PTDC/ MAR/ 68897/ 2006 – The role of the intertidal seagrass meadows of Zostera noltii on suspended particle dynamics - as Principal Investigator of the proposal – not awarded.. • FCT / PTDC/ MAR/ 74843/ 2006 – The role of spatial pattern and genetic diversity in the success of seagrass restoration - as Principal Investigator and coordinator of the proposal – not awarded.. • FCT / PTDC/ MAR/ 58540/ 2004 – Fragmentation of seagrass beds: the effects on the bivalve larvae settlement and adult growth - as Principal Investigator and coordinator of the proposal – not awarded.
