specieswithintheirremit.TheRedListisagloballyrecognisedprocesstoassessthe
extinctionriskofspecies.
TheSymposiumwillhighlightsomeoftheimportantworktakingplaceattheUniversityof
theAlgarve,includingpopulationmonitoringoftwospecies,H.guttulatusandH.
hippocampus,intheRiaFormosalagoon,theconstructionofartiϐicialholdfastunitstoaidin
thehabitatrecoveryandconservationoftheseseahorses,andthebreedingincaptivity
programmeatRamalheteϐieldstation(intheheartoftheRiaFormosa),currentlytheonly
oneintheworldtosuccessfullybreedH.guttulatus(visitwww.hipposafe.eu).
TheSymposiumwillalsoincludeaseparatemeetingcoordinatedbytheFBHandProject
Seahorse(aninternationalmarineconservationorganisation).Thismeetingwillbeaimedat
bringingtogetherlocalentities,suchastheParqueNaturaldaRiaFormosa(ICNF),the
Administraçã odaRegiã oHidrográ ϐica(ARH)andtheComissã odeCoordenaçã oe
DesenvolvimentoRegional(CCDR)todiscusshowbesttocombinetheeffortsofdifferent
public,governmentalandscienceentitiesinordertoimproveseahorseconservationand
managementintheRiaFormosa.
