1. "se" = if
2. "se" = reflexive
pronoun
Eles se abraçam.
3. "se" = impersonal 'subject'
(a) There is no subject (we don't know who is doing the action).
(b) The emphasis is on the action (verb).
(c) Verb in the Singular x Plural (Brazilian Portuguese rules):
- Noun in the singular > Verb in the singular: Vende-se carro.
- Noun in the plural > Verb in the plural: Vendem-se carros.
(d) "Se" Before x After the verb:
- After the verb: in affirmative sentences or questions not starting with a
question
word (quando, onde, etc.).
- Before the verb: in negative sentences, in questions starting with a question
word,
after conjunctions or relative pronouns (que, quem), and after certain adverbs.
__ Exercício com "se": "Anúncios muito loucos". Leia os anúncios abaixo. Depois, com um colega, prepare um anúncio
muito "louco".
1. Procura-se um engenheiro para construir uma ponte [bridge] entre Lisboa e o Rio de janeiro. Os interessados devem mandar o
currículo em
japonês.
2. Procura-se um secretário executivo/uma secretária executiva bem desorganizado/a. O candidato deve saber falar 40 línguas.
3. Compram-se monstros extraterrestres para aterrorizar os clientes da empresa adversária.
