How you doing. This is Justin and I'm back for Blues Lesson number 3 and we're going
to be checking out five blues licks that use the Minor Pentatonic scale.
So I've already explained to you that you can consider your licks to be the same as your
words. So basically you've had a look at the alphabet, or the alphabets, that we use for
blues playing and hopefully you've got those down. Now we're going to be talking about
these five blues licks.

Now all them I think use string bends. If you haven't used string bending before you
probably want to go and check out my lesson on string bending on the website. Check
out the Technique area and there is a whole lesson there on string bending. I am going
to go through some of the basics of string bending during this lesson as well but it
would definitely be worth listening to me gassing on about string bending for ages in
order to make sure you get that technique down properly. If you're going to play blues
guitar string bending is massively, massively important. It's probably the biggest
characteristic of the blues style is this string bending and the different ways you can do
it.

So the five words that we're going to check out, and I'll go through these with you close
up in a sec as well so you can “suss” (work) them out. The first lick that we're going to
learn is the little one that goes like . . . The second one is your classic Hendrix style . . .
We'll have a little chat about that. The third one is this . . . Again classic blues lick with
two bends in . . . And then lick number four is this . . . And lick number five we've got
this . . .

So all five of those are quite standard licks really. Most blues players will have them in
their repertoire. So I want you to get them into your repertoire. Not forgetting of course
that you should be trying to get your blues licks not from videos from me, though I'm
trying to give you some of the basic ones so that you'll start to hear them on record. So
when you're transcribing your solos you'll go “Oh gee, that sounds a lot like that third
lick that Justin taught me”. That kind of idea. It will help you at least recognise some of
those classic blues sounds and I'm planning on doing a whole bunch of these blues lick
videos. Let's go to a close up and I'll show you these five licks.

OK, here we are for lick number one. So lick number one is doing a full tone bend with
your third finger on the eighth fret . . . then a curl on the eighth fret . . . and then . . .
first finger . . . I'm adding a bit of vibrato on that. If you struggle with vibrato with the
first finger for now don't worry that's pretty common, but have a go at it.

Now first thing the first note is a big bend, it's a tone bend. It should sound like this
note here at the tenth fret. And the classic little exercise you should be doing to practise
your bending is playing the note that you're bending from . . . the note that you're
bending to . . . go back and play the first note again . . . and then do the bend . . . So
practise . . .
Primeiro, a primeira nota é um bend grande, é um bend de um tom. Ele deve soar como
essa nota aqui na decima casa. E o exercício clássico que você deveria fazer para
praticar o bend é tocar a nota a partir da qual vocês está dando o bend ... a nota para a
qual você está dando o bend... voltar e tocar a primeira nota de novo... e daí fazer o
bend... então pratique.
Now making sure as well that thumb is over the top and remember that your bends
should be from your arm. Don't be trying to bend like this with you fingers going up like
that. That's just a way to get really crap technique. You've got to be using your
hand . . . You can see that it's all kind of here. That's the movement. That's explained in
my Bending Techniques video better than this. This is just a quick tutorial making sure
that you get your bends at least reasonable for now.

Lick number one full bend . . . then curl . . . which is, you play the note then leave it for
a bit then just put a little bend at the end . . . and finishing there on the root note which
is A that's the fifth fret in case you can't spot the markers. Now a lot of people struggle
with how that first bend gets silenced because it needs to get muted. When you bend
this . . . my right hand is just dipping down to touch the strings . . . muted . . .
muted . . . when I'm talking about the mute I'm talking about my right hand, my
picking hand. I don't want to try and show it to you now because it will screw all my
camera equipment up, but that is also explained on the video about how to mute that.
What you don't want is . . . that sounds really funny doesn't it? That kind of thing; I call
them Seagulls . . . You don't want that effect. You want . . . mute . . . mute . . .

deixar soar um pouco e daí colocar um pequeno bend no fim... e terminando lá na nota
raiz que é o A(lá) é a quinta casa no caso de você não conseguir ver a marcação. Muitas
pessoas tem dificuldade em saber como o primeiro bend é silenciado porque ele precisa
de ser abafado. Quando você faz o bend... a minha mão direita desce e toca as cordas...
abafado...abafado... quando eu falo sobre abafar eu estou falando da minha mão
direita, a mão que palheta. Eu não quero mostrar isso agora porque vai bagunçar todo
meu equipamento de video, mas também é explicado no video como abafar isso. O que
você não quer é ... soa bem estranho né? Esse tipo de coisa; Eu chamo-lhes gaivotas...
Você não quer esse efeito. Você quer ... abafado...abafado...
OK, so that's lick number one . . . Lick number two . . . So this is again a tone bend . . .
Checking your bending is in tune. Now to get that vibrato you see I'm pulling it. I'm not
trying to pull it this way with my finger I'm pulling it with my hand. See the edge of my
first finger is touching on the finger board. And then it's pulling like a lever. Of course
I'm just spreading my fingers out so you can see what I'm doing. But by pulling my
hand backwards and forwards that's how you get the vibrato and that's part of that
technique . . . Nice short little lick that one. So that's lick number two.
Ok, esse é o lick numero um... Lick número dois... De novo um bend de um tom...
Verifique se os seus bends estão afinados. Para fazer esse vibrato você vê que eu estou
puxando. Eu não estou tentanto puxar iesso para cá com meu dedo, eu estou puxando
com minha mão. Veja a ponta do meu primeiro dedo está tocando o braço. E e daí puxa
como uma alavanca. Claro que eu só estou abrindo meus dedos para que você possa
ver o que eu estou fazendo. Mas para puxar minha mão para frente e para trás, é assim
que se consegue um vibrato e é parte da técnica... um lick curto e bem legal. Esse é o
lick número dois.
Lick number three . . . So this is the seventh fret bend . . . Then first finger is coming off
early and covering those two strings . . . is doing a little roll. If you're not too familiar
with rolling you need to check out my video on Rolling . . . Then . . . bending the eighth
fret . . . Making sure you're getting your bends nicely in tune when you start out doing
this. Again, bend . . . first finger . . . roll . . . . third finger . . . Loads of licks stem off
that one.
Lick Número três ... Um bend na sétima casa... O primeiro dedo é tirado antes e cobre
essas duas cordas... fazendo um pequeno rolling. Se você não está familiarizado com
rolling você precisa ver meu video sobre rolling... daí... bend na casa oito... Tendo
certeza de que você está fazendo os bends bem afinados quando começar a fazer isso.
De novo, bend... primeiro dedo... roll...terceiro dedo...
OK next lick we've got lick number 4. So now we're doing the same bend as that last
one, eighth fret bending so that it sounds like the tenth fret . . . Look that's the same
note . . . You hear I'm using a flick off . . . Bend . . . First finger . . . pick . . . flick it off .
. . and then bend again.
OK próximo lick nós temos lick número 4. Vamos fazer o mesmo bend que o último lick,
benda na oitava casa para que soe como a decimal casa... veja que é a mesma
nota...você ouve que eu estou usando um pull off ... Bend... primeiro dedo... palheta...

OK and last of all we have this lick . . . First finger, third finger flick off to first . . .
third . . . first finger . . . and we got a little curl on that. This time we curl up . . .
First . . . then it's a roll. Try and get those fingers out of the way. And then third finger
on the root note and it's just the end of it.
OK e por ultimo nós temos este lick... Primeiro dedo, terceiro dedo pull off para o
primeiro dedo ... terceiro ... primeiro dedo... e nós temos um pequeno bend de ¼ aqui.
Dessa vez para cima... primeiro... daí vem um roll. Tente deixar esses dedos fora do
caminho. E então o terceiro dedo na nota raiz e acabou.
That's your first five blues licks. I'm going to talk a little bit more about string bending
