ACCOUNT OF IDEA SPECIAL INTEREST GROUP 2010: DRAMA FOR YOUNG PEOPLE OF SECONDARY AGE LEANDRO VIANA (Black text = Leandro’s notes mostly in Portuguese. Red text = translation.) Primeiro dia do SIG! First day of the SIG Após a palestra fui para o workshop da professora Julie Ward da Jackie Drum Arts (arts education co-operative – Inglaterra), trabalhei com os jovens das comunidades locais da Grande Belém e com as estudantes britânicas de Julie Adam Bethlenfalvy, professor da HUDEA and Roundtable Theatre in Education Company – Hungria, também se juntou ao grupo. After the forum, I went to the workshop of the teacher Julie Ward from Jack Drum Arts (English arts education co-op), I worked with young people from local communities in the Belém area and with Julie’s British students. Adam Bethlenfalvy, HUDE and RTin E Co teacher also joined the group A finalidade deste workshop era montar uma cena curta com os jovens para apresentar na abertura do Special Interest Group nº 2 – Young people / Secondary Education (Grupo de interesse especial – Jovens, Ensino Médio). The goal of this workshop was to mount a short scene with the young people to present at the opening of Special Interest Group 2 (as above) Às 14 horas nos encontramos no Auditório da Universidade para o inicio das atividades dos SIG. We met at 14:00 in the University auditorium to start the SIG activities. When I arrived at the room for my SIG I saw educators and cultural agents already taking part in an activity different to what I would carry out with young people: this worried me because I wanted to take part with the educators. I asked Julie what was going on? Julie explained to me what was happening and that I didn’t have to worry because she would be able to give me all the guidance I needed about what the educators were doing. I was reassured and realised that Julie has an honesty and way of talking that Brasilian educators don’t have. The first group presented a scene with phrases which said that what the young people needed to have was freedom and responsibility to overcome their fears. The second group presented something very interesting, but the English of Tintin Kappined from Finland is very strange and I didn’t understand anything that was said and felt lost. The presentation of the third group, composed of German teachers, was really stimulating: three teachers showed their backs to the audience and with their arms linked formed a wall. The fourth teacher was the student who tried to get across the wall while the teachers forming the wall shouted “Break the Rules” O quarto grupo apresentar foi o meu com os jovens. The fourth group to present was mine, with the young people. We worked on the theme of ‘threshold’’ (a limit to be overcome). The young people represented various feelings through theatrical games. The “threshold’’ from what I understood is the moments in our existence that test us to the limit. For example, the passage from childhood to adolescence and subsequent changes of age, the end of a relationship, a life-and-death moment. The workshop ended at 16:00 as a task for the next day we were asked to find a newspaper article that says something about being young. Expliquei calmamente. I decided I would just observe the other groups and take notes of the activities suggested. Julie Ward came up to me and asked what had happened and I explained calmly. The groups had 15 minutes to create activities. We went to the room at the side of the auditorium and the first group made ‘’The Corridor of Objects’’, which took the form of a corridor made by the students in the room and in this corridor were objects serving as obstacles through which a blindfolded student might make their way guided by the voices of their colleagues. When the blindfolded student is close to an object everyone shouts ‘’OH!’’ and when they can advance freely everyone calls ‘’AH!’’ In this way the student must cross the space overcoming the obstacles (threshold). This activity was put forward by the British group of teachers. I thought the activity was structured enough with rules and seriousness. Something maybe typically British. The second activity was made up by teachers from Finland, Sweden and England. It was a drama game where you make a circle and one person goes in the middle. This person is going to ask the question ‘’Can I do this?’’. Everyone replies: YES. Then everyone repeats the act that the person can do. Then we got into pairs and took it in turns to give a massage to each other. We had to make the massage represent the sound and force of the four natural elements: water, fire, air and earth. Also we had to vary the intensity of touch. Ele continua dizendo coisas como: The third activity was carried out by Argentinians and Mexicans. It was the game of the flower. First we had to make a circle and close our eyes, and everyone began to control their breathing and let their body descend (head, shoulders, trunk, arms, to go down and lie on the ground in a foetal position); peaceful music must be played. On lying down you must stay still until the leader says, ‘’Grow, my beautiful flower for life’’. At this signal you start to rise up with much lightness and calm. When everyone is on their feet (all this is done with eyes closed) the leader tells everyone to walk about slowly feeling the presence of the other flowers. He carries on saying things like: Os rituais foram deixados para trás na atualidade, como recuperar isto com os jovens? The rituals are forgotten today, how can we rescue them for young people? The young feel like gods, yet they can be afraid. Thus we leave dreams behind, but we continue to make our way and learn. Leave something behind, may you travel with passion for the new. Eventually he asked that we feel the space and the other flowers with our bodies and not our eyes. I very much enjoyed this activity because it coincided with my feelings. Really, I experienced various conflicting emotions and it brought to mind how I felt in my youth A quarta atividade foi realizada pelo grupo de professores brasileiros que apresentaram uma cena sobre “violência na escola”. The fourth activity was realised by the group of Brasilian teachers who presented a scene about ‘’violence at school’’. They avoided the theme of interaction amongst the groups and Julie and Adam talked with everyone about mixing up the groups in the next meeting. And they left us with two questions for the meeting with the other SIGs: O drama/teatro pode ser proposto como disciplina escolar? Can drama/theatre be proposed as a scholastic discipline? How can we work with young people so they can be themselves? On this day was the first interaction between the SIGs. We met with SIG 11 – (as above) and also SIG 9 (as above Deveríamos identificar no outro grupo questões contingentes que dialogassem entre si. We had to identify, with the other group, contingent questions which we might discuss between ourselves. Os integrantes do SIG nº11 elaboraram duas questões ou preocupações, são elas: The SIG 11 members composed two questions, or worries, these were: Quais são os riscos e benefícios de encontrar o outro? What are the risks and benefits of contact with ’’the other’’? How far must this go in order to have a meaning with regard to transformation, given that risks and benefits are linked directly to the affiliation of power, domination and dependence? In the same way, the members of SIG 9 brought some other questions for the discussion: Como cuidar da estética (sentido = diferentes formas de ação) para fazer com a comunidade produza um drama (cena ou espetáculo)? How can aesthetics be safe-guarded (thought=different forms of action) to make drama with a community (scene or play). How can we take care that aesthetics safe-guards the history (feelings, local realities and necessities) of these people and this community? How can we respect the feelings, previous achievements and prior consciousness of the community? How can we create a relationship with the community so that the project we develop (whatever that might be) really influences learning and transformation (ways of living and behaving) of the community? O primeiro a refletir sobre todas estas questões em geral foi Dan Baron que disse: The first person to reflect on all these questions in general was Dan Baron who said: “Para a mudança paradigmática e a transformação social é preciso ressignificar a estética como transformador social. ‘’For exemplary change and social transformation it is necessary to redefine so that aesthetics can be an agent of social change. Without an aesthetic dimension, there is not the possibility of social change. We must think of aesthetics as social action. Change ‘’formal v. informal’’ into ‘’institutional v. Popular”. Assim, a educação abraçará o comunitário, a sustentabilidade e o popular”. ‘’We must mould ourselves in accordance with what the community can and wants to work on with us. In this way education can embrace the communitarian, sustainability and the popular’’. There exists a model of society, a model of people (stereotypes) as much in the real as the ideal plane. Therefore we must look for the development of a critical citizen, active, knowledgeable about his folklore, his culture. Education must be at the same time conventional (what we think of today as formal/institutional) and non-conventional (informal/popular) within the school so that the formal/institutional can embrace the informal/popular. [1] Ver anexo nº 4. [1] See annexe 4 Terceiro dia Day 3 Neste dia Iniciamos as atividades com três perguntas básicas: 1 – Quais as necessidades dos jovens? On this day we began the activities with 3 basic questions: 1 – What are young people’s needs? 2 – What can drama (theatrical practice) do to realise these needs? 3 – How I use my theatre practice to help make young people’s needs become reality? I was astonished to see the group of young people from Marituba with their teacher returning on the third day of activities of the SIG. Julie too and she spoke with me about it. She was happy about that. I think everyone was. To respond to question 1 the young people from Marituba and the UK were asked to speak. They said that they thought that if we wanted to achieve the needs of young people, art must be more valued in formal education Os professores brasileiros, o Jorge do México e a Cecília Professora de teatro da Argentina disseram que no caso da America Latina os jovens precisam de maiores oportunidades e da valorização de sua identidade. The Brasilian teachers, Jorge from México and Cecilia, drama teacher from Argentina, said that in the case of Latin America young people needed better opportunities and appreciation of youth identity. However, Cecilia also said that these two things already happen in her country in a natural way Os demais integrantes de outros países (Europa) concordaram que o principal e a questão da valorização da identidade do jovem. The rest of the members from different countries (Europe) agreed that the most important thing was the question of recognising youth identity. Also it was said that some, but not all needs of young people could be approached through drama and theatre. This is the method. We can certainly achieve many positive things with drama/theatre, but other things, no. As respostas das duas questões seguintes foram feitas simultaneamente, tentei anotar o máximo de informação que pude perceber, mas fiquei um pouco perdido. The replies to the two following questions were made simultaneously – I tried to write down as much information as I could, but I got a little lost. Firstly a European couple told their experience in forum theatre with puppets. (I was glad to hear about a way of using puppets I hadn’t heard of before). They chose to work with puppets for activities about gender and sexual orientation. Their story happens in a boat where the boy wants something more from the girl. The second person to speak was the same girl (Canadá – work with young prisoners) who gave a paper presentation the same day as Julie. She explained her work and classified it as a kind of DIGITAL STORY TELLING. The third person, Deborah from England, described the work of after-school drama. Her play tells the story of two islands: one good (with quality of life) and the other bad (with drugs and violence problems). From this point the youths must choose on which island they want to live and explain the reasons for their choice. I liked this idea a lot – for the work I am developing in the peripheral barrios of my city something similar would be perfect. The fourth person was Cecilia from Argentina – she spoke about the festival she organises in Buenos Aires which tries to work with young people on the question of identity and social differences through an interactive display board of experiences and practice throughout the festival. She said that young people need to be heard, to have opportunities and self-esteem. The fifth person was Roger from México who works with the body through the use of paper. He tries to work with the identity of the design until it reaches the real identity. He said that he tries to discuss with young people the reason why some young black boys choose to use photos of someone white to represent themselves. He realised the tyrannical influence of the media on ideas of beauty. Through discussion he tries to develop with youths concepts which give worth to their own personalities and characteristics. After all this, designs are transformed into silhouettes for drama games A sexta pessoa a falar foi Julie. Julie was the sixth person to speak. She told of her methodology of working in Jack Drum Arts. It is communitarian work, an informal social project. She tries to achieve artistic working practices. She put the question she makes to herself – what can theatre be in its entirety (in the community in which I work)? It is necessary to have a commitment to your own community A sétima pessoa foi Kitty de Hong Kong - Devising teathre – Ela desenvolve jogos teatrais sobre as próprias pessoas envolvidas nas atividades (trabalho sobre identidade). Kitty from Hong Kong was the seventh person – devising theatre – She develops theatre games using the people involved in her activities (work about identity). The eighth person was Carol from the USA – Shakespeare plays in schools. She works with middle education students and develops theatrical pieces with Shakespeare texts which have to be presented by the students in 15 minutes. Improvision and general tecnics. Nao consegui fazer nenhuma anotação desse trabalho. The ninth person to talk about their work was Tony from England. Improvisation and general techniques. I couldn’t make any annotation of this work. The tenth person to speak was Cecilia from Argentina. She described developing the festival Vamos que Vienos and told how a youth once said ‘’theatre is like a drug – once you use it you cannot stop’’. The eleventh and last person to talk was a gentleman from Colombia. He said something about the doors of all the world: something about how globalisation makes it possible for all nations to live closer together, however, this opening of the gates also breaks down our own identities, but with theatre there exists the possibility of developing a community of identity in the school and in life. Opiniões de professores (formal Work): Observation: how do the teachers look at young people? Make a link with how the family looks at young people. Give voice and make space so that young people can really be heard. Opinions of teachers (formal work). Observation – technologic – depression: problemas. Observation – technologic – depression: problems Private v Public (school): problems of equity, educational priorities, how art is treated in the school. Opinions about community work with drama/theatre (oficineiros=practitioners) EU: Pesquisar sobre jogos teatrais com maior interesse; Pensar sistematicamente um modelo metodológico; ME: Research on drama games with main interest: think systematically about a methodogical model. JULIE (U.K): To get my master in education and international development and use it to fight for more resources, improve status of drama in education. DEBORAH: Abrir a cabeça para aprender a prática de ensinar – to remain open – minded to the practice of others and not become fixed in your way of working. As a basis of work: to see the adolescent as we can and want to see. Everyone to see the adolescent as he wants to and can be. To make discourses that challenge the hegemonic reasoning of youth education. There will only be change in education if educators/adults can enter the emotional world of the young person. The adult has to go to the young person to understand their vision of the world. To use a methodology which encompasses music and drama. We are here not because of our age but because of what is in our hearts. Try to stay young in the soul and search more with that and be more youthful. To remain young by means of watching the movies, TV shows, listening to the music they listen to and reading the books they read. That’s the best way to understand them and their preoccupations. UMA PERGUNTA FEITA POR ROGER PARA TODO O GRUPO: Por que trabalhar com pessoas que nao pedem ajuda? A question from Roger to the whole group – why work with people who don’t ask for help? Julie – when she was adolescent they didn’t have a place or a direct voice and felt stupid and worthless. And now years later I feel the educational system is still failing. I began not with the intention of teaching but interacting. ACAO – REFLEXAO – REACAO.
