T his workshop will look at three methods
of binding pages and making hard
c overed books . It will c over the planning
of pages in relat ion to binding t ype and
look at some potent ial problems . T he
pamphlet st itched book is suitable for
books with a small number of pages ,
the c oncer t ina allows f le x ibilit y in the
number of pages while the sect ioned book
is a method of put t ing together books
with a large number of pages . We will
look at the technical detail of st itching,
the use of end papers and “casing in” or
making and at taching a hard c over to
each t ype of book
J I M BU T L E R
JIM BUTLER (Seamus de Buitleir) was born in Dublin and lives in
Cambridge where he runs the B.A. in Illustration & Animation at
Cambridge School of Art, Anglia Ruskin University.
Since completing an M.A. in Communication Design at Manchester
Metropolitan University in 2001, he has combined his own practice,
centered on drawing, printmaking and artist’s books, with university
teaching. His work has been exhibited widely in galleries in the UK,
Ireland, France, Belgium, Holland, Portugal, Mexico and the USA,
while his commissioned illustration work has included clients such as
Adidas and Siemens. In 2008 he designed and commissioned a book
of new drawings from leading illustrators including Quentin Blake,
Ronald Searle and David Hughes to celebrate the 150th anniversary of
the opening of Cambridge School of Art.
