LOGOS Newsletter April 2014 Director’s Message Welcome to the third issue of the LOGOS Australian Centre for Hellenic Language and Culture Newsletter. 2014 is going to be another fantastic year regarding teaching, research and service to the community. LOGOS will continue developing online programs. The Foundation for Hellenic Studies and its great support for LOGOS in the Great Debate! The tertiary program in Modern Greek is now available at Charles Darwin and Griffith universities as well as South Australia’s three universities, and also to anyone else interested in studying Greek online, nationally and internationally. Once again we would like to sincerely thank all our friends and generous supporters. Without our supporters LOGOS would not be the leading centre of excellence we have become. Professor Michael Tsianikas Flinders University Our Team The successful delivery of all programs undertaken by the LOGOS centre and effective development of a national online program for Modern Greek needs a hardworking and absolutely dedicated team. Each member of the team is bringing a range of skills and knowledge to the group. Our team includes: Ms Maria Shialis, Postgraduate student and tutor, Ms Cecily Wright, Educational Designer, Dr Maria Palaktsoglou, Director of Studies, Ms Layla Plummer, Administrator and Project and event coordinator, Professor Michael Tsianikas, Director, Ms Marianthi Kosmarikou, Tutor and Online material writer and Mr Antonios Litinas, Associate Lecturer and Online material coordinator who is seconded to the Modern Greek section from the Greek Government. flinders.edu.au/LOGOS Almost 250 guests crowded the Adelaide Pavilion on Thursday 7th November for the South Australian Book Launch of “Call me Emilios” by Justice Emilios Kyrou of the Supreme Court of Victoria followed by the Great Debate: Greeks do it Better. Mr George Kapiniaris introduced the Hon Greg Crafter AO, Chair of the Foundation for Hellenic Studies; the Ambassador for Greece His Excellency Haris Dafaranos; and Michael Abbott AO QC as Moderator for the Debate. The Negative team led by Mr George Kapiniaris, the Hon Amanda Vanstone and the Hon Tom Koutsantonis staged a brave battle against the Affirmative team led by the Hon Maria Vamvakinou, the Hon Nick Xenophon and Mr Costas “The Gardener” Georgiadis. The Foundation’s own Supreme Court comprising Chief Justice Chris Kourakis of the Supreme Court of South Australia, Justice Emilios Kyrou of the Supreme Court of Victoria and the audience, declared the affirmative team the winners of the debate. We are pleased to announce that $20,000 from the evening was donated to the Centre which will assist with the development of the online national/ international programs. Mr Christos Vlahos, President, received a certificate of appreciate at the event. Each year Flinders University receives a number of students from St George College enrolling in the Modern Greek program to further their education in language and culture. St George College have been a long and generous supporter of the Modern Greek section at Flinders University and of the LOGOS Centre. The College sponsors the bi-annual Greek research conference held at Flinders as well as the St George College prize in Modern Greek to the student that attains the highest mark in first year Modern Greek. The Centre offers its sincere appreciation to the College for their continued support and also to Ms Deanne Taliangis and the art faculty and students for providing many pieces of artwork that were on display to visiting delegates during the conference last year. We received many comments and praise. The Pan-Laconian Association generously donated $4000. Aristotelian Celebration Dr George Panagopoulos, Principal of St George College and Mrs. Raffaela Del Vecchio, Deputy Principal recently visited the Centre. Federal Member visits LOGOS In the context of the 2013 Dimitria Greek Festival, the LOGOS centre in conjunction with the Pan Macedonian Association of SA, were pleased to host the first annual Aristotelian celebration held in November 2013. Celebrating a year since the unveiling of the Aristotle statue that was kindly donated to the Centre by the The Chalkidikeon Society of South Australia, the evening included a presentation on the achievements of the LOGOS Centre and the Modern Greek online programs. The Hon Maria Vamvakinou MP, federal member for Calwell, Melbourne, visited the LOGOS Centre during her recent trip to Adelaide. Ms Vamvakinou enjoyed a tour of the Centre, a presentation of its programs including the online Modern Greek programs. Ms Vamvakinou was very impressed with the Centre’s progress, the scope of its activities and its plans for the future. She promised to be in contact with the centre, promote its activities and connect the Centre with Victoria. flinders.edu.au/LOGOS Community News University of Crete On 8 February the LOGOS Centre welcomed two visiting scholars, Associate Professor Aspasia Hatzidakis and Associate Professor Giannis Spantidakis from the University of Crete. A day’s seminar organised by LOGOS, Australian Centre for Hellenic Language and Culture, the Education Office of the Consulate General of Greece in Melbourne and the Modern Greek Language Teachers’ Association of South Australia was held on professional development for teachers of Modern Greek. Over 30 Modern Greek teachers attended the seminar with many commenting they had an excellent day and gained valuable knowledge. The centre will organise another seminar for teachers during the second semester of 2014. The Greek Orthodox Community of SA Inc – Con Marinos AM Prize The Greek Orthodox Community of SA Inc – Con Marinos AM Prize in Modern Greek was created in 2000 to honour a great man, Mr Costas (Con) Marinos. Mr Marinos is remembered by the members of the Greek Orthodox Community of South Australia for his dedication, tireless efforts and outstanding contribution to Greek-Australians in this State and nationally. He participated in all aspects of Community life and led in the establishment of many of the Community’s programs in the fields of welfare, education, aged and child care. An eloquent and great man in mind and spirit who will always be loved and cherished. A dream of more than twenty years for the Greek community of Queensland to establish a tertiary Greek program that is at last becoming a reality. The Greek Community of Queensland, spontaneously decided to establish ten competitive scholarships, through the LEXION alliance, worth $3000 each for Modern Greek students.
