Dear friends,
Caros amigos e amigas,
We are very pleased to report that Fiscal Year 2015 brought
•
•
MAPS tremendous growth and service enhancement in
many areas. Our dedicated staff and volunteers served 6,584
clients directly, and provided outreach to another 7,946, for
a total of 14,530. We expanded several programs, and moved
forward on special projects to help MAPS assess new service
needs as well as making it easier for staff to report service
data. Major accomplishments included:
•
•
•
•
Serving 43% more clients in the MAPS In Home
Therapy Program, 14% more in HIV/STI Prevention &
Screening, and 33% more in Citizenship Assistance,
compared with FY 2014.
Successfully applying for new and expanded funding
from the US Centers for Disease Control & Prevention,
the Massachusetts Office for Victim Assistance (MOVA)
and other state sources that will allow us to dramatically expand HIV/STI and Domestic Violence/Sexual
Assault services starting this fiscal year. We now have
a full-time DV/Sexual Assault Advocate in our Brighton Office, and another new Advocate will arrive in
Framingham shortly!
Obtaining accreditation from the Bureau of Immigration
Appeals, so we can provide even more citizenship services
and can be reimbursed by funders at a higher rate.
Completing a Senior Living Needs Assessment and Feasibility Study, creating a new 5-year MAPS Strategic Plan,
and installing our first-ever relational Client Database.
Planning a major media campaign throughout our service area, as well as a new MAPS Portuguese-language
cable TV show for Somerville Community Access TV, to
increase awareness and use of MAPS services.
All this plus a highly successful 2015 Awards Gala and the
generosity of many wonderful donors and funders helped
MAPS strengthen its already healthy financial position for
FY 2016—though there have been some cuts as well. We did
not receive a new state contract for health insurance outreach
and enrollment services in FY 2016, despite far surpassing
last year’s goals, so we reluctantly had to end that important
program for now. MAPS remains committed to advocating
for our community members to have full access to health
insurance and health care.
As always, we’ll continue seeking new funding sources and
asking for support from all of you, since our work is not done.
Key programs such as Immigrant Integration Services and
Elder Services still urgently require more funding so we
can provide all the hours and services our clients need and
deserve. And we’ll keep exploring how to address growing
service gaps in areas such as senior housing and home care.
Many thanks for all you do for MAPS and the community. We
hope you will enjoy all of the information and photos from
FY 2015 in the pages of this report.

Candidatámo-nos para novos financiamentos do US Centers for
Disease Control & Prevention, Massachusetts Office for Victim
Obtivemos acreditação do Bureau of Immigration Appeals, o

Thankfully, we were able to enroll
her in a Health Insurance plan that
would cover her needs.
One of our Case Workers helped
Maria obtain her US Citizenship, which allowed her mother to
stay longer in the US to help the family cope with the many
problems they faced. Numerous phone calls were placed to
USCIS, and our case worker even accompanied the mother to
personally deliver a special request to the agency.
Through our Case Worker’s perseverance, we were able
to request special accommodations. The immigration officer
came to the rehabilitation facility where Maria was staying,
took her fingerprints and interviewed her. This lenghty process culminated with the addition of a new US citizen! Maria’s
journey to be sworn in as an American citizen was worth it
despite all the inconveniences and obstacles.
