Federal University of Bahia, Brazil [email protected] Dr. Alex Alves Bandeira is a Civil Engineer and currently is a permanent professor in the Department of Constructions and Structures of the Polytechnique School at Federal University of Bahia, in Brazil. Dr. Alex Alves Bandeira has been working a lot in computational mechanics and structural engineering. Dr. Bandeira has 17 years of professional experience in research and instruction, design and consulting. At the Federal University of Bahia, Dr. Bandeira has only 2 years and, in this short time, he has created and structured the Master Degree of Structural Engineering, the only post-graduation in this area in the state. The Federal University of Bahia is a centenary institute and is the most important University in Northeast of Brazil. This year he is teaching in this course and working with MS degrees students. Before returns to his town, Dr. Alex Alves Bandeira has worked 15 years in São Paulo, capital, a biggest city of South of America. He worked almost 10 years in Mackenzie University, UNINOVE University and worked as consultant in some companies of structural calculation. He developed researches since 1995, in his master degree, doctorate and as research professor at Mackenzie University. During this last 2 years he developed his researches in Federal University of Bahia. Dr. Bandeira’s research expertise and projects include Computational Mechanics, Non-Linear Analysis, Finite Elements Methods, Elasticity, Plasticity, Contact Mechanics, Impact problems, Non-Linear Dynamics, Reinforced Concrete, Concrete Structures Reinforced with Carbon Fiber, advanced computer modeling and simulations, and numerical simulations technologies in structural pavements. He has developed and conducted short courses and workshops in Brazil. He has made over 30 presentations in several countries, like Austria, Brazil, China, England, Germany, Greece, Holland, Italy, Poland, Portugal, Switzerland and USA. Dr. Alex Alves Bandeira was founder member of iSMARTi – international Society for Maintenance and Rehabilitation of Transport infrastructure (2005), and participates in the first iSMARTi international conference on sustainable transport infrastructure, sponsored by the Chinese Academy of Transportation Sciences, in Beijing, China in April 2008, having presented two works. He has been a member of the organizing committees of the 2005 International Symposium on Pavement Recycling, realized in São Paulo in Brazil. He also has been a chairman of the three editions of the International Conference of Recovery, Maintenance and Restoration of buildings, realized in 2004 in São Paulo, 2006 in Rio de Janeiro and 2010 in Rio de Janeiro, all of them in Brazil. Dr. Alex Alves Bandeira knows Dr. Waheed Uddin since 2004. Relevant Experience Dr. Alex Alves Bandeira has made part of his doctorate in Germany and Italy. In Germany he worked at the Institute of Civil and Mechanical 1 Engineering at the Hannover University. He developed researches in contact mechanics undergoing large 3D deformation with one of the most important researcher in this area in the World. He worked with the professor Peter Wriggers. In Italy, he worked at the Institute of Mechanical Engineering at the University of Padua. He developed researches in micromechanical contact mechanics and wear. He studied the microscopically behavior at the contact interface by numerical procedures. He works with the professors Dr. Giorgio Zavarise and Dr. Bernhard A. Schrefler. In his PhD developed in Brazil, he worked with Dr. Paulo de Mattos Pimenta at the University of São Paulo. He worked also in finite elements methods with contact mechanics with friction. Dr. Alex Alves Bandeira made several consulting in structures engineering for companies in São Paulo, as SCAC Foundations and Structures Company and GTP Structural Engineering Company. Publications and Presentations Dr. Bandeira’s 70 publications include 1 Chapter, 3 papers in refereed journals, and 61 other conference papers. He has edited one national conference proceedings. Dr. Bandeira has been an ad hoc evaluator of refereed International Journal of Pavements since 2007.
