Cezar Baião CEO of Wilson Sons Group NEW,S Abril 2015 3 Cenário Xô, pessimismo! In an economically challenging year, a transport and infrastructure analyst believes that land and maritime logistics could offer outstanding opportunities While some businessmen are worried about how to balance their accounts this year, others, despite not seeing things through rose-tinted glasses, have reasons to feel positive about 2015. This is because they believe the year will not be as gloomy for certain sectors as some specialists suggest. According to Citi’s Transport and Infrastructure analyst Juliano Navarro, companies which provide land and maritime logistics services could actually benefit from the economic situation. He emphasizes that some infrastructure companies will have a challenging year due to the sluggish growth of the economy, rising long term interest rates and potential difficulties concerning investments in highways, airports and urban mobility projects. “Access to credit for funding infrastructure projects is already more restrictive where the banks are concerned, which could worsen the liquidity situation of some construction companies and consequently, cause delays to the works. In this context, added to poor industrial performance in Brazil, those who could benefit, or at least suffer a reduced impact, are companies which provide land and maritime logistics services”, Navarro explains. The economist observes that this scenario derives primarily from the search for greater efficiency on the part of the companies and, consequently, for a reduction in costs. “Concerning maritime logistics services, resilience should be greater still, as many of them are critical to their users, with there being no substitute services. However, it is a sector which will be influenced by the flow of foreign trade and consequently by the movement of ships in Brazilian ports. The exchange rate has a great influence on this dynamic where the devalued real, in relation to the US dollar, tends to prejudice imports on the one hand, but to favour exports in the other.” The challenging outlook for the economy and for companies directly or indirectly connected to the infrastructure sector should continue in 2016, according to the specialist, but with reduced intensity. To take advantage of the opportunities, companies need to have some points on their radars. “For the providers of logistical services, cost-cutting should also be on the agenda. Opportunities should arise with the cross selling of varied logistics services to existing clients, based on the appeal of cooperating in order to further reduce the cost of their logistical structures”, concludes Juliano Navarro. vios nos portos brasileiros. Nós, hoje, temos as melhores soluções do estado para cargas de projeto.” Project Cargo in Salvador Tecon Salvador focuses on attracting this type of cargo To further contribute to the economic development of the state of Bahia, Tecon Salvador is intensifying its commercial efforts to attract project cargo, cargo which is too large to fit into a container. The commercial director of the terminal, Patricia Iglesias, is the person in charge of this initiative. “We have always been central to attracting investment to Bahia. As such, it makes complete sense for us to focus on project cargo”, states the executive. Tecon Salvador already has experience with this type of cargo. The terminal recently received different pieces of equipment for the construction of wind farms in the state of Bahia. Tecon Salvador spent a long time operating 6 Abril 2015 NEW,S outside this sector due to its size restriction, explains Patricia. Until 2010, there was no space available to receive the cargo. That same year, the expansion of the terminal was announced and the works lasted until 2012. It was only then that space was made available for the break bulk cargo. “Our principal challenge for 2015 is to show that over these 15 years of our history, we have acquired the know-how and market credibility to carry out successful and efficient operations in this sector”, says the director. “In addition to this, we have important advantages, such as having our own docking berths and storage space which eliminate the need for transfer over long distances. Today, we have the best solutions in the state for project cargo.” Centre for Development receives new class The course, which started in March, is ratified by the Navyis approved by the Navy In March, Wilson Sons Tugboats received its first class for their course in Developing Awareness concerning Vessel Protection. The initiative is the result of the company’s accreditation with the Maritime Authority to administer the syllabus of the Professional Maritime Education course. The certification, obtained in November last year, attests to the quality of the facilities and professionals of the William Salomon Centre of Maritime Development (CAMWS) of Wilson Sons. Now, with the support of the Navy, Wilson Sons Tugboats offers the course at its own unit, in Guarujá, to associates who do not yet have the qualification. Initially, the course was taken by 20 professionals who work in the ports of Santos and São Sebastião. The company also has plans to provide this service to other companies in the maritime community. Recently, the Centre of Maritime Development itself provided training for the captains of the pusher tugs of Transpetro and Hidrovias do Paraguai. The Special Basic Awareness Course (O Curso Especial Básico de Conscientização - EBCP) was regulated by the Directorate of Ports and Coasts (DPC) in 2014, with the aim of providing offshore workers with basic knowledge regarding awareness of vessel protection, which should be applied on board on an everyday basis and in emergency situations. The EBCP is an obligatory course and the professionals in the sector should take it by the end of 2015. The William Salomon Centre of Maritime Development was inaugurated in 2010, alongside the Guarujá I shipyard, and is a site designed exclusively for training and education. The classes run there address essential issues for crews, such as navigation, the operation of auxiliary navigation equipment, operational and breakdown maintenance, insurance, health and the environment (HSE) and quality management. One of the major advantages of the Centre of Maritime Development is a simulator. This equipment allows for the operation of vessels and tugboats in real time, whether in port, maritime or offshore support. The company invested approximately US$ 850 thousand in the simulator, which reproduces extreme situations such as adverse wind and sea conditions, loss of engine power and the breakage of towage cables, and is used to train commanding officers. A empresa realiza operações buffer no armazém. Wilson Sons Logistics signs contract with PQS The company uses space in a logistics condominium to serve the client In September, Wilson Sons Logistics signed a contract with Petroquímica Suape (PQS) to meet an urgent demand. For this client, the company uses space in the Cone Suape logistics condominium, near the Port of Suape, in Pernambuco. Wilson Sons occupies four modules in the condominium, with an area of approximately 5.5 thousand m² and headroom of 12 metres. The company carries out buffer operations in the warehouse. In addition to the infrastructure offered by Cone, the companies will also have access to all the services available at the Truck Yard, a centre of support and screening of trucks and drivers opening in August. In January, the Suape Internal Customs Point (EADI), administered by Wilson Sons Logistics in Suape (PE), obtained authorization to operate under the special “customs warehouse” regime. As such, the dry port will be able to serve an even greater number of clients who are seeking tax and logistics advantages in the storage of imported products or those intended for exportation. The operation of the area under the new regime was authorized on January 12th by the Federal Revenue Service. Among the main advantages offered by the customs warehouse, is the possibility of the nationalization of merchandise in break bulk form. This is to say, the payment of the taxes will occur as the cargo is nationalized and subsequently removed from the warehouse, thus allowing for improved cash flow and logistics for companies. “It is a special regime still offered to few players in the market. We hope to meet the demand of the Suape region and attract new importers and exporters whose needs come to be met in the region. It is an opportunity for expansion and the creation of new business”, states the manager of the Northeast Rig (Plataforma Nordeste), Alielton Villas Boas. s Conseguir uma foto pra cá NEW,S Abril 2015 9 Entrevista Evolução cultural é trabalho constante Trabalho precisa dar apoio à estratégia da companhia, diz a consultora Thais Blanco 10 Abril 2015 NEW,S A ssunto que vem se tornando cada dia mais comum entre as grandes empresas, a evolução cultural não é exatamente um tema novo, como pontua Thais Blanco, sócia diretora, responsável pela Consultoria THBlanco Gestão da Transformação. NEW,S | Este é um tema novo? Cultural evolution is continuous work Work needs to support the company’s strategy, says the consultant Thais Blanco An issue which has become increasingly common at large companies, cultural evolution, is not exactly a new issue, as Thais Blanco, managing partner and head of the firm Consultoria THBlanco Gestão da Transformação, observes. Culture evolves continuously and, in general, outside the control of managers. According to her, it is essential to carry out structured work so that the company can take control of this transformation.”The risk of not paying attention to this issue is that this culture will turn into something which does not support the company’s strategy”, says the consultant. In an interview with NEW,S, she describes the work in greater detail and explains why it is so important. NEW, S | Why is it important to work on cultural evolution in companies? Thais Blanco | Culture is how people operate within a company. This culture is also changing and being adjusted. The importance of this work is to take control of something which is going to happen anyway. The risk of not paying attention to this issue is that this culture will turn into something which does not support the company’s strategy. NEW, S | Is this a new issue? Thais Blanco | It isn’t exactly a new issue. Culture has always existed, but it is still only worked on in an organized form in few companies. Much has been spoken about the issue, there has been progress, but there is still much scope for work on cultural evolution. In recent years it has been discussed more. This is a process which demands work. You cannot create a culture in six months. It is a project of three, four years. NEW, S | What kinds of companies are more attuned to the subject? Is there a specific size? Or are there sectors which are more engaged? Thais Blanco | Generally speaking, the big multinationals were the first to concern themselves with this, due to the needs of their scale. With operations spread out all over the world, it was necessary to have cultural unity. Following this, the process was observed in companies undergoing mergers and acquisitions. As each of these companies has its own culture, they ended up becoming like a patchwork quilt. It was then that they realized the need to create a single identity for the new company. More recently, family companies which have undergone restructuring processes have focussed on culture. There is no specific sector. It is much more related to companies which need to create a single identity. It has to do with the company’s business model. NEW, S | Older companies have, inevitably, undergone various “cultural evolutions”. Is it more difficult to work with this kind of company? Thais Blanco | It has less to do with time and more to do with how the company dealt with the changes. This can create an internal resilience. The professionals are less afraid and know that they deal with this better. This facilitates the process. NEW, S | What kind of professional creates the biggest barriers to the work of cultural evolution? And which are more engaged? Thais Blanco | As we are supporting a strategy, we need the support of the company management. It is they who are at the front of the business strategies. To incorporate this culture within a company, we need to work with the management, which goes beyond the chairman and the directors. It is they who will dictate the tone of the desired behaviour and how this process will develop. There is a kind of a professional who is more engaged with cultural evolution, but this has nothing to do with being at the company more or less time, but with a series of personal characteristics. When the work starts, we already know that we are going to deal with certain professional types, common to all companies. NEW, S | What feedback have you had from companies which have successfully undergone this process? Thais Blanco | To undergo a process like this you need to have consistency and persistence. We change values and beliefs. This is not an exact science, or a recipe for a cake. The company’s own strategy can change in the middle of the journey. So this evolution has to be in harmony with the needs which arise. To transform the culture of a company you need time, commitment, a lot of planning and great discipline. NEW, S | Within a well-structured process, what is the next step for the majority of the companies? Thais Blanco | There is no end to this work. There are three processes companies can undergo: change, transformation and cultural evolution. The first we simply call “change”, which is a different way of doing the same thing, but without altering the dynamic of the organization. When we speak of a process of “transformation”, this is a new way of being. It requires change on much deeper levels. The next step, the third, is that the company arrives at a state of “evolution”, which is continuous. The company needs to undergo a process of evolution on a small scale every day. This transformation may also be necessary depending on the market strategies. If there is a consolidation, or a big change in the market, it will once again be necessary to transform the culture of the company. The Wilson Sons way under transformation The Wilson Sons group is also undergoing a process of cultural evolution. Under the consultancy of Thais Blanco, the company is seeking a culture which will support its strategic plan. The director of Organizational Development at Wilson Sons, Aléa Fiszpan Steinle, explains that, when the work on the development of the mission and vision was carried out, there arose the question of what is the “Wilson Sons way”. To define this, the company applied a diagnosis with the management to understand how they saw and wanted the company to be. Based on this diagnosis and the strategic challenges which the company faced, concepts were defined which served as a guide in this process of cultural evolution. In addition to this, each manager underwent an evaluation of their personal characteristics. “Aligning the culture of the leadership is the key to cultural evolution”, explains the director. With a group of diversified companies and operations spread out all over Brazil, special attention was given to certain details. “Cultural and regional differences were respected, but always seeking unity. The idea is to show that together we can be better than we are separately”, observes Aléa. Subsequently, in addition to the culture and its strategic challenges, the company defined its values, which is to say, the set of attitudes which form part of everyday life at company. To ensure continuous evolution, the company also intends to seek out professionals who are already aligned with its style. For this purpose, selection strategies were designed, aligned with the values and culture, for new associates. 15 years of Tecon Salvador Terminal is important for attracting investment to the state of Bahia SUCCESS STORY A little over 15 years ago, a very special chapter began in the history of the Wilson Sons Group and also in the history of the state of Bahia, with the inauguration of Tecon Salvador, the container terminal of the Bahian capital. The company was already familiar with the state, given that it was founded in Salvador in 1837 and continued operating in the region in various capacities over the years. “Tecon Salvador is very proud to continue this story of development. Throughout these 15 years, we have worked continuously to ensure that our mission to be one of the main tools for attracting and retaining investment in the state is fulfilled”, says Tecon’s executive director, Demir Lourenço Junior. The work effectively began in 1999, when Wilson Sons won the auction for the privatization of the Container and Heavy and Unitized Freight Terminal of the State of Bahia (Terminal de Contêineres e Cargas Pesadas e Unitizadas do Porto de Salvador). The leasing contract, signed with the Docks Company of the State of Bahia (Companhia das Docas do Estado da Bahia - Codeba), has a term of 25 years renewable for a further 25. The following year, Tecon Salvador was inaugurated. “Initially, there was a great deal to do. The eight employees, who were dedicated to port operations at the company in the pre-privatization era, became eighty within three months and today number over 730. The little over 49 thousand TEU handled in 2000, had grown to 289 thousand by 2013. Average productivity, the principal measure of efficiency of a container terminal, rose from 7.5 to 55 movements/hour”, highlights the executive. The terminal experienced significant growth until it became too small to handle the demand. In 2010, the expansion of Tecon Salvador was authorized, with the annexation to its premises of an area beside it. The expansion was concluded in 2012 and not only increased the area of the terminal but extended the Água de Meninos quay, to allow the docking of still larger vessels. According to the director, over the course of the last 15 years, Tecon Salvador has made advances and adopted practices such as the implementation of online gate in and out scheduling, docking windows for vessels, and more recently, the Customer Website, which will provide a better level of service and bring the customer closer to the terminal. “All this is the result of the great efforts and dedication of our associates and the investments carried out by the company. These investments, which total around US$130 million since 2000, have allowed our capacity to leap to 530 thousand TEU. “In the search for excellence, Tecon conducted intense efforts to attract cargo which was shipped by more distant ports, thus increasing the logistical costs to companies. It also sought to containerize new types of products and inputs and is working to bring project cargo to the terminal, thus further driving the economy of the state. “We see many challenges in the future. Among them, we can highlight the opening of new markets, attracting cargo from other economic regions, the containerization of cargo historically handled in bulk, such as soya and iron ore, as well as continuing to support the development of coastal shipping, which will serve to change the transport Na página ao lado, o terminal antes da expansão On the facing page, the terminal prior to the expansion matrix of Brazilian cargo consumed in Bahia or exported to the rest of the country. All this will be made possible by the permanent engagement of all the partners of the terminal”, Lourenço concludes. Historic record in coastal-shipping cargo handling. “O mapa torna clara e tangível a estratégia do Grupo e permite acompanhá-la de maneira 20 Abril 2015 NEW,S integrada, disciplinada e organizada”, diz o CEO. Tecon Rio Grande turns 18 One of Brazil’s main container terminals is turning 18 in 2015. Tecon Rio Grande, which is one of the most modern and well equipped in the country, was also first to be privatized by means of a bidding process in 1997. Since then, Wilson Sons has invested more than US$250 million in transforming Tecon in one of South America’s finest. These resources have secured continuous modernizing of the installations. Tecon Rio Grande operates with six Post-Panamax container cranes, as well as two mobile cranes for moving project cargo. For yard operations, the terminal is in possession of 14 RTG cranes and 12 reach stackers. The size of the mooring quay was tripled so that in 2008 it reached a length of 900 meters. Furthermore, Tecon Rio Grande is in possession of 22 Abril 2015 NEW,S a 390 thousand m2 area for moving and storing containers, 17 thousand m2 of storage space for both general and special cargo, 10 gates for entry and exit of trucks, yard equipment, the latest IT system for operational management available in the market and a 15 meter draft which enables it to operate with large vessels. It also boasts access to its facilities through three different modes: by train, water or road. This whole infrastructure guarantees a high level of excellence, and the terminal currently registers an average traffic of 55 containers per hour. The company operates 16 regular services, with 14 ship-owners, as well as having more than 3 thousand importers and exporters registered in its client base, which makes it important for the economic development of the state of Rio Grande do Sul. Challenges and achievements In the year during which the Wilson Sons Group presented its strategy, terminals concentrated on cabotage Without a doubt, 2014 was a very special year for the Wilson Sons Group. In addition to the work carried out in all its different businesses, the company continued to concentrate on strategic alignment and expanded its future outlook to 2022. According to Cezar Baião, CEO of the Wilson Sons Group, long-term planning is a fundamental factor in order that the company continues forward on its successful path. “Since the IPO in 2007, we invested heavily in increasing capacity, expanding the fleet, and in acquisitions”, says the executive, in reference to the fact that the past year was important for broadening the planning horizon. “All of our staff members must have the knowledge about where we want to move towards, how we intend to achieve that goal and what their individual contributions towards this must be. We have come to realize that when people understand that our actions are all linked to our strategy, they each individually come to have a better grasp of the value of their own work as well as their role within the company.” As a tool for supporting the work carried out, in 2013 the Wilson Sons Strategic Map was developed. This map visually represents how, when the company’s objectives are combined, they contribute to achieving its objectives. “The map showcases the Group’s strategy in a clear, tangible manner which allows us to follow it in an integrated, disciplined, organized way”, adds the CEO. Baião further highlights the other achievements by the Wilson Sons Group. 2014 saw the arrival of six new vessels for the Wilson Sons Tugboat and Wilson Sons Ultratug Offshore fleets, the inauguration of Wilson Sons Logistics’ Suape Inland Port (EADI), the progressing building works of Brasco Caju and the intense activity carried out by Wilson Sons Shipyards in the construction of Fugro Aquarius. Terminals From among the Wilson Sons Group businesses, the container terminals, which are two of its largest assets, are always worthy of mention. Last year, Tecon Rio Grande and Tecon Salvador registered an increase in cabotage trade traffic. In Salvador, the capital of Bahia, the growth in this mode was of 10.4%, at 49.2 thousand TEU moved. As for Rio Grande, the business rose by 3.7%, reaching 37.6 thousand TEU. It is precisely due to this cabotage trade that Tecon Salvador’s flow with Manaus grew, and thus the capital of Amazonas turned into the main city of origin and destination for cabotage trade cargo. Manaus overtook traditional destinations such as Santos (SP) and Rio Grande (RS), and it now accounts for 35% of the entire Tecon Salvador cabotage trade volume. In 2013, the city was in the third position, at just over 20% of the total volume moved in this mode. Currently, two of the largest ship-owners, namely Aliança and Log-in, have their coastal trade vessels bound for Manaus stop over in Salvador on a weekly basis. “Historically, there was a lot of cargo bound for the North, whilst not much descended to other regions of the country. A good portion of the products travelled long distances by road. This was how we were able to identify the great potential existing in the development of this market, so much so that we placed a dedicated team in Manaus for attracting cabotage trade cargo”, says Demir Lourenço, executive director at Tecon Salvador. Also during the course of last year, the terminal’s team concentrated on attracting new cargo, such as chemical and mining products, like nickel concentrate, silicon carbide compound and vanadium peroxide. One of the mining sector’s cargoes is nickel concentrate, which comes from the area of Itagibá (BA), and started to be exported by Salvador for the Asian market at the start of the year. Another of the terminal’s great conquests was the start of operations with vanadium peroxide, thanks to the inauguration of a large mining endeavor in inland Bahia. Another new development in 2014 was the implementation of new technologies that optimize the inspection of containers and register information about the vehicles accessing the terminal. A scanner and OCR (Optical Character Recognition) software were acquired. The equipment is designed to attend to the Federal Revenue’s reception area, which determines the inspection of all the import containers and the units identified by customs controls, as well as foreseeing the automation of information pertaining to vehicles entering Tecon. The scanner, which is non-invasive inspection equipment, contributes towards a reduction in cus- toms disembarkation times and prevents handling of the cargo, reducing the risk of incidences and faults. As for the OCR technology, installed in the terminal’s access and exit points, it converts data pertaining to the vehicles directly to the terminal’s system in an agile, automatic manner. A POSITIVE RESULT Tecon Rio Grande finished 2014 with positive results. The total volume of cargo grew, boosted by the increase in transshipment – a process through which cargo is transferred from a vessel to the terminal, and then sent to another destination. Another factor that contributed towards the growth that took place last year was the breaking of a number of historical records. During the month of May, the monthly record of 3.9 TEU moved was achieved in cabotage trade. The most noteworthy products relating to this type of operation were rice, furniture, wine, conserves and powdered milk among others. Where April is concerned, it was the best month for operations in the terminal since it started its activities in 1997. According to Tecon Rio Grande’s directorpresident, Paulo Bertinetti, “at Rio Grande, we offer outstanding infrastructure, safety and optimal conditions to a number of economic sectors, as we work with cargoes from the agricultural and food sectors, among others. We are further in possession of commercial offices in Caxias do Sul and Porto Alegre, so that we may swiftly attend to clients throughout the state. Despite the fact that the economy shrunk in 2014, we managed to maintain a stable volume of movement. We observe the market and carry out the necessary investments in infrastructure, systems and staff in order to always be able to offer our clients the very best service”. A number of initiatives developed throughout the year also contributed towards the positive results achieved in 2014. Tecon Rio Grande invested approximately US$8.5 million in infrastructure and equipment, facilitating internal logistics for clients and suppliers alike. During the first semester, the company concluded the comprehensive automatizing of the terminal’s entry and exit points. The OCR system, which was also implemented in the terminal, did away with the need for a manual cargo inspection service, deriving in increased operational agility and speed. The company also acquired four new reach stackers, which are used to move containers. The US$1.5 million investment represents significant agility, quality and safety improvements where the movement of cargo is concerned. Nossas estatísticas de segurança têm que A challenging market Operational excellence and safety help the company gain prominence In spite of the challenges that arose in the oil and gas market, Brasco managed to stand out in 2014. To this end, the company made use of three of the pillars that support its operations: operational excellence, safety and the relationship with its clients. “It was a challenging year on account of the times the market is going through, but we looked for ways to overcome the impediments that lay in our path”, says Gilberto Cardarelli, Brasco’s executive director. Last year, which was the company’s fifteenth, marked the signing of an important contract with PetroRio, formerly HRT. The company, which operates the Polvo field, started collaborating with Brasco in December 2014. “Every new client means a lot to Brasco. This contract is very special, mainly on account of it being for a field that is already in the process of production”, says the executive. “Brasco had worked with this client in the past, offering logistic support during the exploration and development campaigns for the field. We are therefore delighted to be partaking of the project once again.” Another positive aspect was the successful conclusion of two operations, one for Queiroz Galvão, and another for Total. They were both started in 2013 and concluded in 2014. Last year, Brasco made much progress in a project that will be important in 2015: the building works for the Caju Base in Rio de Janeiro. The 508-meter quay was built, as per the endeavor’s deadlines and budget. The company is currently awaiting the conclusion of the dredging operations. SAFETY One of Brasco’s operational pillars is safety. In 2014, the company achieved the DuPont world-class standard of safety, after carrying out a second in-company perception survey. This is the highest level of excellence and, as well as DuPont, who developed the methodology and is responsible for the survey, Brasco was the only company in the country to achieve this. “If we are not in possession of a high level of safety, the rest of the operation is compromised. Our safety statistics must be at international levels of excellence in order that our operational performance may follow suit. This standard is the most relevant indicator for our clients, who are international oil and gas companies”, explains the director. Also during the course of last year, the company celebrated the 1,100th day without any accidents at the Niterói base, and a further 1,500 days devoid of accidents were recorded at the Guaxindiba unit. Furthermore, Brasco renewed the ISO 14001 and OHSAS 18001 certifications, and continues to invest in environmental services, such as tank cleaning and residue management. Brasco has a 280 member-strong team in the Rio de Janeiro and São Luiz (MA) operations. In 2014, an average of 100 moorings took place every month in the company’s terminals. A entrega deve ocorrer ainda no primeiro semestre. 26 Abril 2015 NEW,S Intense work The shipyard delivered five tugboats and an offshore support vessel last year, and is in the final stages of building an ROVSV “Vamos buscar novos contratos e ampliar ainda mais nossa gama de embarcações.” “We plan to secure new contracts and expand our range of vessels even further.” Estaleiro Guarujá II, onde o Fugro Aquarius está em construção Guarujá II Shipyard, where the Fugro Aquarius is being built With six vessels delivered last year, and others in different stages of construction in its two units, Wilson Sons Shipyards is preparing for yet another challenging year. One of the highlights of 2014 was the launching and final assembly stage of an ROVSV (Remotely Operated Vehicle Support Vessel), the first of its kind to be built in Brazil. Out of the vessels delivered in the last five years, five were commissioned by Wilson Sons Tugboats. During the course of 2014, the WS Phoenix, WS Antares, WS Bellatrix, WS Pegasus and WS Perseus tugboats were launched. The delivery of a further four is expected to take place over the course of this year. Another vessel delivered was Wilson Sons Ultratug Offshore’s PSV (Platform Supply Vessel) Zarapito. The company secured a contract with Wilson Sons Shipyards for the building of another two PSVs, the deal was closed during the sixth round of the Petrobras Program for the Renewal of the Maritime Support Fleet (Prorefam). In 2015, the company’s focus is turned towards finishing the ROVSV Fugro Aquarius, which was commissioned by Fugro Brasil. It is a significant offshore support vessel and it is currently in the finishing stages and the commissioning. Delivery is set to take place during the first semester. “That ROVSV is highly emblematic for the company”, says executive director of Wilson Sons Shipyards Adalberto Souza. “We are already in possession of a great deal of experience in the assembly of PSVs, but we are now at a different stage. We plan to secure new contracts and expand our range of vessels even further.” The ROVSV is under construction at the Guarujá II shipyard. It is 83 meters in length and 18 meters in breadth, it is able to transport 1.9 thousand tons of deadweight cargo, and it is equipped with two remote submarine vehicles that allow for monitoring the assembly of offshore submarine structures. The vessel’s technology and project engineering are by Dutch company Damen, and it will be diesel-electric propelled. Giro pela WS Year of good results The delivery of PSV Zarapito and the commissioning of new vessels marked 2014 In a year where a fairly stable scenario in the offshore support vessel market was prevalent, Wilson Sons Ultratug Offshore – a joint venture between the Wilson Sons Group and the Ultramar Group – was able to achieve good results. New vessels in operation and new orders were the highlights of 2014. According to Wilson Sons Ultratug Offshore’s executive director Gustavo Machado, the delivery of the PSV (Platform Supply Vessel) Zarapito in March was a highlight. This is vessel number nineteen of the company fleet, and it is the last to be delivered from four ordered to attend contracts won during the third round of the Petrobras Program for the Renewal of the Maritime Support Fleet (Prorefam). Also in relation to Prorefam, Wilson Sons Ultratug Offshore partook of and won the contracts in the public tender process as part of the program’s sixth round. The two 4,500 PSVs, are already on order to Wilson Sons Shipyards. “We also partook of the seventh round, bidding to build an AHTS (Anchor Handling Tug Supply Vessel), our strategy being to diversify our fleet and AHTS vessels are an interesting alternative for maritime support”, says Gustavo Machado. “We were not able to secure a contract, but it was useful experience.” The director further highlighted that there had not been much growth in the fleet attending to the oil and gas sector last year. In addition, in his opinion during the course of 2015 he does not have expectation for fleet growth and Petrobras will prioritize the renewal of contracts of vessels already in operation. Safety Another stepping-stone for the company during 2014 was the implementation of the WSUT+ safety program, which seeks a change of the workforce culture to guarantee improved operational safety. “The result was very positive, but there is still a long path ahead. This change of mindset is very important for the quality of our operations”, says the executive. It was the first time a job of this kind was developed by DuPont for offshore support vessels in Brazil. The executive further highlights that safety was always important for the company and that the initiative would allow for improving performance even further. Initially, four vessels – PSVs Saveiros Gaivota, Talha-Mar, Fulmar and Batúira – were chosen for the implementation of the program. “We are already able to perceive an important behavioral change amongst our professionals where safety is concerned”, he declared. Além disso, as novas embarca- 30 Abril 2015 NEW,S ções aumentam nossa capacidade operacional e fortalecem a nossa frota, que é a maior do mercado brasileiro”, destaca o executivo. Presence expanded New operations and an increase of the fleet were the highlights of 2014 2014 was a very special year for Wilson Sons Tugboats, as the company started important operations and increased its fleet by adding five azimuthal-propelled tugboats with a bollard pull of 70 tons. For the company’s director of operations, Sérgio Guedes, these actions showcase the level of commitment towards quality, safety and efficiency in place at Wilson Sons Tugboats’ operations. “Reaching new ports and terminals and signing important partnerships are testimony to the fact that our work is acknowledged and respected in the sector. Furthermore, the new vessels increase our operational capacity and strengthen our fleet, which is the largest in the Brazilian market”, says the executive. The majority of the new operations are concentrated in the state of Pará. In August, the company started attending to the port of Belém, as well as the ports of Vila do Conde, in Barbacena, and Trombetas, in Oriximiná. “For Wilson Sons Tugboats, these operations are referential. For the first time, we are carrying out fluvial operations, not to mention starting work in an area where a pronounced increase in the movement of vessels and cargo is underway”, says the director. Last year, the company also started to operate in the port of Açu, the port complex that is being built in the north of the state of Rio de Janeiro. Experimental attendance of the Mining Terminal (T1) has been taking place since October, and regular operations have been completed. “By mid 2015, we will have tug boats based in Açu to attend to these operations”, says the company’s commercial director, Jonathan Dumphreys. The fleet grows In order to be able to cater for the new operations without compromising attendance in the other ports and terminals it is active in, Wilson Sons Tugboats is constantly investing in the building of new vessels. In 2014, five tugboats arrived to add to the fleet, which now boasts 74 operational vessels. The new vessels are part of a series of 12, which is the total amount to be delivered before the second semester of 2016. With a new identity that includes a prefix to identify them as part of the Wilson Sons Group, in 2014, tugboats WS Phoenix, WS Antares, WS Bellatrix, WS Pegasus and WS Perseus were delivered. They were all built in the Wilson Sons Shipyards units in Guarujá (SP). Another highlight of the year was the expansion of the Tugboat Operation Center (COR), which started tracking the company’s vessels, and attends to the ports of Rio Grande (RS), Salvador (BA) and Fortaleza (CE), thus guaranteeing improved operational safety and efficiency. During the course of 2015, the operations underway in Pará and the Açu port started to be monitored by the COR. At the end of last year, the William Salomon Maritime Improvement Center (CAMWS), which is run by the company, received legal ratification by the Brazilian Navy to administer a course on Awareness about Vessel Protection. The initiative is part of the company’s process of becoming official in conjunction with the Maritime Authorities to impart the syllabus for the Professional Maritime Course, which is an indication of the quality of the installations and the professionals working in the center. The first course took place in March this year. The Inauguration of EADI Suape expands the company’s Northeast platform In 2014, Wilson Sons Logistics strengthened its regional platform strategy. The company inaugurated the Suape Inland Port (EADI) in September after having won the bidding process in 2013. Together with the Suape Logistics Center (CL), which is also located in Pernambuco, EADI makes the company’s Northeast platform more robust. The new unit and the CL are part of a US$4.7 million project, and together they make up a logistics complex that integrates foreign trade and domestic logistics operations. “This inauguration comes as part of our strategy of offering comprehensive solutions for our clients in the North-East. In addition to EADI, which is focused on foreign trade, and CL Suape, which deals with domestic logistics, we also offer transport services that guarantee end-to-end attendance of the logistics chain”, says Wilson Sons Logistics executive director, Thomas Rittscher III. EADI Suape is equipped with state-of-the-art installations. In total, 50 thousand m2, 12 thousand m2 being covered area, and 38 thousand m2 yard. The unit is further equipped with 52 electrical sockets for reefer containers, 42 docks, a refrigerated area for pharmaceutical products, an area for chemicals, as well as the whole administrative infrastructure for the Federal Revenue, Ministry of Agriculture, Anvisa and support for dispatchers. In all, the Suape complex has an area of 79 thousand m2, and the capacity for 29 thousand TEU/year, 16 thousand pallet positions in the storage facilities and 1,225 TEU in container positions. By way of proof of the quality gradas para grandes empresas, vem garantindo o crescimento da plataforma logística regional. “Somos reconhecidos por ter a melhor estrutura e alinhamento aos nossos clientes”, comenta. of the work carried out and of the installations, the company closed an important contract last year with SC Johnson, which produces a number of products for the cleaning, insecticide, repellent and wax markets, among others. The company already had an operation in place in the South-East, but had for two years been searching for a distribution center in the NorthEast that would adapt to its needs. At the end of 2013, Wilson Sons Logistics and SC Johnson came together to close a contract for the operation, which was to start in June 2014. SC Johnson uses an area of 5 thousand m2 in the Suape Logistics Center, which might be expanded in the next few years, depending on the demand. An important differentiating factor is the densification of 1.8 pallets-position per square meter, which represents a far higher usage ratio than that of the market average, at 1.4 pallets-position per square meter. Excellence In spite of the competition’s growth, Wilson Sons Logistics maintained its prominence thanks to EADI Santo André, consolidating its position as São Paulo’s largest bonded warehouse by value of cargo imported. That factor, coupled with the strategy for developing comprehensive solutions for large companies, has been guaranteeing the growth of the regional logistics platform. The terminal is acknowledged as having the best customs precinct infrastructure in the region, with two 12-meter high warehouses equipped with verticalization infrastructure, providing increased security and cargo arrangement. EADI’s location is also an advantage, as it is outside of the axis around which trucks are subject to restrictions in the municipality of São Paulo. The executive says that EADI Santo André is a model unit, and one of reference for the Federal Revenue. “We are known for having the best infrastructure and alignment with our clients”, he says. Visitador da Wilson Sons Agência a bordo de embarcação: equipe dedicada para atender melhor o cliente Wilson Sons Agency inspector on board a vessel: a team dedicated to better attending the client Focus on 2015 After the challenges faced in 2014, Wilson Sons Agency is already looking to the future Important operations, as well as the arrival of new clients marked 2014 for Wilson Sons Agency. Nonetheless, the company would rather start focusing on 2015, which looks very promising. “We will carry out special operations for the oil and gas industry in Rio de Janeiro”, says executive director Christian Lachmann. “It will be a complex job.” According to the executive, one of the differentiating features of this market lies in providing the necessary agility in the attendance. “Everything works faster. Therefore, we need specialized teams that are always on the ready.” Last year, Wilson Sons Agency carried out four special operations involving semi-submersible vessels, also for the oil and gas industry. One of the peculiarities of 2014 was the growth of the participation of the Vitória branch in the company’s total performance. This was made possible thanks to the arrival of a new client, Gearbulk, in Sep- tember. The companies had already worked together until 2009, and last year they restarted the partnership. Wilson Sons Agency has a dedicated team of 60 vessels per year for that client specifically. In addition to the Vitória branch, the Rio de Janeiro office also collaborates in this work. Another positive occurrence that took place last year was the loading of livestock that took place in the port of São Sebastião, in São Paulo. The first was carried out in May, exporting cattle (buffalo) to Venezuela. This continues to take place successfully on a monthly basis. The activity calls for a different approach in conjunction with the authorities, as well as special care when loading the feed and the animals themselves. The live cattle also receives differentiated treatment, both when the vessel is released and for unloading, which must be done immediately after arrival at the port. NEW,S Safer operations For the fourth consecutive year, the company registered a fall in the rate of accidents involving time off For another year running, the Wilson Sons Group registered a number of achievements in the area of Health, Safety and the Environment (HSE). An improvement in the indicators, the broadening of programs and the publishing of an inventory were but some of the factors that have come to demonstrate the growth of the area throughout the years. 2014 was the fourth consecutive year during which the company managed to reduce the rate of accidents involving time off. Between 2013 and 2014, a 24% fall was registered, but if the statistic is observed since 2010, a year before the implementation of the WS+ safety program, a 75% reduction may be observed. “In 2010, we registered 7.14 accidents for every 1 million hours worked. Thanks to the advances achieved in the last few years in the area of safety, we managed to reach the figure of 1.81 accidents for every 1 million hours worked”, explains corporate HSE manager João David Santos. “Our objective is to reach a rate of 0.5 accidents before 2020, which would place us in a world-class safety bracket.” The manager highlights the fact that in addition to a reduction in the number of accidents, Wilson Sons celebrates a reduction in the gravity of the accidents that do take place. “The staff members involved are coming back to work sooner, and that is a very good sign where their health is concerned.” João David Santos declares that all of that was made possible thanks to the widespread adhesion by the workforce to the WS+ program. In 2014, the program was rolled out to all the business units, thanks to the launch of WSUT+ in Wilson Sons Ultratug Offshore. “Our goal now is to rollout the program to all our operations before the end of 2016.” The commitment of the “number 1s” of each business was essential to ensure the success of the initiative.
