Presentation
A man who has his life marked by a tragedy and has been relegated from his family
for a long time decides to ponder over his life and returns home for Christmas
celebrations. This is the premise of “December” (Feliz Natal) , which marks Selton
Mello's debut as a feature film director and has been given three awards at the I
Festival Paulínia de Cinema, for Best Director, Best Supporting Actress (Darlene
Glória and Graziella Moretto) and the Special Mention for young actor Fabrício Reis.
Aside from the direction, Selton is also the screenwriter of the film, along with
Marcelo Vindicatto. Finally, the production was carried out by Vânia Catani and the
editing by Marília Moraes.
The film has been selected for Festival do Rio 2008 and for the competitive section
Premiére Brasil. Its national premiere, released by Europa Filmes, is scheduled for
November 21st.
“December” is a Bananeira Filmes production along with Mondo Cane Filmes, coproduced by Teleimage, Locall and Europa Filmes. The shootings were carried out
between June and July of 2007 in Rio de Janeiro and Ipatinga, Minas Gerais.
Brief Synopsis
Caio is 40 years old and runs an old junkyard in the countryside. On Christmas Eve
he packs up and returns to the state capital to see his relatives and friends. By doing
that, he will be able to reencounter someone who he has not seen for a long time:
himself.
SYNOPSIS
CAIO is 40 years old and owns an old junkyard in Brazil’s countryside. In that
universe of puzzles and rusty parts, he tries to put together the puzzle of his own
existence. He lives a steady routine beside his devoted wife and dog, steady and
organized. But it has not always been like that. In the past, he led a fast-paced and
irresponsible life. Luckily enough, he got away alive, but had to move away from
town, his family and friends. That year, when Christmas is coming up, he evaluates
his life and decides to go back to the capital. As he gets there, he reencounters his
brother THEO, who is tangled in a corporative web and experiencing a crisis in his
marriage. MIGUEL, his father, has an affair with a doubtful young woman. MÉRCIA,
his forsaken mother, mother for all the evils, holds herself out on alcoholic cocktails
and psychotropics. FABI, his sister-in-law, is lost and frustrated because of a failed
marriage. His nephews BRUNO and VITOR grow up fast and become more and
more demanding. Finally, his best friends NETO and ALEX have stopped in time,
spending their lives on wild nights. Many things have remained the same, while
others, not a bit. However, Caio’s presence is going to change things. As it is known,
small isolated facts that happen in a fraction of a second can dramatically modify
people’s lives. Eventually, he will reencounter someone who he has not seen for a
long time: Himself.
