Kaimann Brazil
As one of the world's largest
banking groups Santander has
more than 90 million customers
and, with that number growing
every year, the company must
process increasingly high volumes of data.
Nowhere is this more true than in
Latin America where Santander
has emerged as one of the leading financial institutions in some
of the fastest growing economies
in the world. In Brazil alone Santander has more than 9 million
customers and 3,696 branches,
all handling tens of millions of
transactions every day.

In the future these figures will
become even bigger and new
technology and innovations
will be needed to manage this
change. With this in mind, in
2010, Santander committed
more than €200 million to build
a state of the art data processing
and technology research centre
in the city of Campinas, known
as the “Silicon Valley of Brazil”.
Computer chips work faster and
more efficiently at lower temperatures but as the computer
operates the temperature rises.
Removing this heat is essential
in any computer but becomes
especially important when oper-
ating large scale computer servers that can never be allowed to
crash or fail.
In Campinas, like all other similarly large data centres around
the world, this meant implementing a dedicated chilled water system to cool the servers,
completely separate from the
conventional
air-conditioning
system used to cool the building.
The project consultant, MHA
Engenharia Ltda., knew that
such a large chilled water system would inevitably require insulation to stop condensation but
the delicate nature of the com-
Kaimann Brazil
puter servers created additional
considerations. In order to operate properly the computer servers must be kept in near sterile
conditions, completely free from
dust and fibres.
Kaiflex was the ideal choice for
the chilled water and air-conditioning systems throughout the
data centre. The closed cell rubber foam would not only prove
effective at stopping condensation, the structure of Kaiflex is
also such that it could not contaminate the valuable computer
equipment with harmful dusts or
fibres.
Fortunately for MHA Engenharia
Ltda., and Santander, the specialist contractors for the project,
Star Center Soluções em Climatização Ltda., knew exactly how
to install Kaiflex in such a delicate environment.
On site Star Center Soluções
em Climatização Ltda. installed
more than 17,500 m² of Kaiflex
sheet and 2,000 m of Kaiflex
tube – most of which was 32
mm thick.
