Conversation between Marina Coelho and Loredana Sperini on February 13, 2014, on the occasion of the exhibition Mi ritorna em mente, held at KUNSTHALLE São Paulo, between 8 February and 8 March 2014. Marina Coelho: Would you like to tell me a bit how it was your initial process with art? How did it come into your life? Loredana Sperini: I didn’t go in search of art. It came to me when I went to an art school in Zurich after I worked as a textile designer. To work with textile design you should do one year of art school and then get into that studio. I didn’t have to do it because they hired me due to the portfolio of drawings I already had. Everyone told me it would be a great studies year for me because of the many things one learns. But I was determined to paint. MC: Quantos anos você tinha nesse momento? LS: Eu não era mais tão jovem. Eu tinha uns 26 anos. Então eu Then, it was only after I worked as a textile designer, that I decided to study this year and to work with other media, and to learn other things. The school teachers always told me that they saw a strength in my works, that they were very personal, and that I should go to an art school. MC: How old were you at that time? LS: I was not so young anymore. I was about 26 years. I did it really late, but I never had that passion, this thought of making art. All this was too far away for me. But then, in that year, with the teachers, studying art history, visiting many exhibitions, I slowly entered this world and I really enjoyed it. When you work as a textile designer you create drawings which are interesting for that time, but tomorrow they became out of fashion. The are not works that last in time, and that are personal with bigger depth. I really like this idea of being in a slower pace, to think more about what you are doing. I also discovered artists who inspired me because they created their own world. So then, I visited several art schools, and in the end I thought that the Lucerne one would be the right school for me, because they give a lot of space to ////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////// PROFILE Issue # 2/14 | 3 ////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////// Bordados sobre parede / Embroidery on wall fiz o teste e eles me aceitaram. Com eles eu podia controlar o desenho de modo ainda mais devagar e fazê-lo de ainda mais preciso. the work and it is very personal. So I did some tests and they accepted me. And that was how I started. The idea was more external, it was the teachers who pushed me to try. MC: And in those early years, how were your works like? LS: In art school I was mainly doing photography. It was like a personal diary in which I had pictures of all my friends. At first I did not want to work with my hands, because I was afraid to do more drawings or paintings as I did for the textile design. I tried not to work much with the camera, but more with the eye. And so I did the art school with photography and video. But as soon as I finished, I knew I missed working with my hands, with different materials and colors. And then, I resumed to draw, but thinking about how to move forward started doing embroidery. With them I could control the drawing in an even slower pace and making it even more accurate. ////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////// PROFILE Issue # 2/14 | 4 ////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////// Dia 6 (da série All the things you are) / Day 6 (from the series All the things you are), 2013 MC: E você fez os bordados por muitos anos? MC: And did you do the embroidery for many years? LS: I did from 2002 until 2008. Many years, because it was a great success. It was in a period when everyone did photo or video, everything was very fast in the art. And I was like a counterpoint. My work was very slow, since there was the question of the time intrinsic on it. MC: Was there some specific topics that interested you to develop the embroidery? LS: Yes, at the beginning with the embroidery I portrayed, like with photography, all my friends. But did not want to make a realistic portrait, but it was more as I saw them, and including what one could not see. MC : That’s interesting… from the beginning in your work there was already this idea of something that is hidden. You always discuss what is not seen, which is beyond sight. And soon after you started the sculptures? LS: Yes, that was always what interested me. What I liked a lot when I was doing these embroidery, was that when you touch them they are like reliefs. I have always had the idea of making reliefs which have a bit of movement, with some parts in and others out. MC: It has been a while since you started doing this work with the wax. Houve um momento em LS: The works with wax and colors came from the drawings. There was a time when the figure was no Then I found the wax with which I could work with many layers, creating parts with reliefs sometimes inside and others outside, making it very sculptural. After then, I decided to stop making the reliefs on the walls and bring them into space. The first works were sculptures with those hands. For me it was important to work not with all fragments of a person, but start with a fragment and seek new ways to put them together, giving a new meaning and making a new sculpture of mine. And so, I realized that the individual was not as important, it was more important the atmosphere. Initially my work was always in black and white. When I left the figure I started using colors, because they are more personal and emotional. The initial drawings pleased everyone because they were easy to read. When I started to leave the picture and start to work with the colors, the works became much more personal. And I like the fact that the works did not work for everyone in the same way, and that they were not so commercial, but more personal. MC: In the last exhibitions you started to introduce more architectural works, large structures in iron or cement too. How are these works like? LS: They also emerged from drawings I did and wanted them to become also physical. I did some ////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////// PROFILE Issue # 2/14 | 7 ////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////// Esculturas em epóxi / Epoxi sculptures também. Enquanto eu fazia models and then went for these large formats. I liked the aspect of them leaving the drawings, passing through models and growing into the space. But this is still a very new thing in my work. If you see my drawings they are always the same: there are always the lines and surfaces. In the larger format I work always with materials like glass, metal, and always everything is very black. MC: For the exhibition here at KUNSTHALLE São Paulo you have brought some works that are small black sculptures. Would you like to tell me a little about them? LS: I sought to create sculptures that would respond to the porcelain sculptures that I was going to show, but with fragments I had in the studio. It was like a game of putting them together, and each with a different story, nothing new has been created to be added. What interests me is this moment of memory in the work. As I made these black sculptures, using these ////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////// PROFILE Issue # 2/14 | 8 ////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////// Making of essas esculturas pretas, ao usar esses fragmentos que tinha no estúdio, eu me recordava de outros trabalhos que eu já havia feito. Eu não conhecia a cidade. fragments I had in the studio, I remembered other work I had already done. There are no other memories between me and these fragments, which is different from the porcelain sculptures and also the installation I did at KUNSTHALLE São Paulo with the window. There is a precedent story present these fragments, of where they were before, and the story of how I found them. This all is always in the work. MC: Yes, and when one looks at the work, one sees that there is a whole story hidden within it. This work you did with cement and the window, initially, was to be made with cement and fabric, but when you got here everything changed. Would you like to tell me a little how this process happened and about your experience in São Paulo? LS: When I decided to go to Sao Paulo, I was a little stressed out on how to make the exhibition in just one week. I did not know the city. Há tantas coisas que me atraem e que me inspiram. with me, and do this work which I started doing now, that was the cement carpet, and that interests me to continue. From the very first day when I saw this gentleman passing caring those windows, I could not get that image out of my head. I had to do this work with the window. Then when we found a window, I realized that the fabric would have closed everything. This work is part of the same idea of the small works but larger in size. MC: Que bom! Fico contente! MC : That’s great! I am glad! But when I arrived, I was very impressed with the amount of things you find, they are like gifts that I find and that become part of my art. There are so many things that attracted me and inspired me. For me, having gone to São Paulo, was to take a step forward on a path that interests me a lot. It was an inspiration for me, it was like a gift. ////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////// PROFILE Issue # 2/14 | 10 ////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////// Mi ritorna in mente KUNSTHALLE São Paulo convida a artista suíça Loredana Sperini (*1970, em Wattwil, Suíça), para apresentar Mi ritorna in mente, sua primeira exposição individual no Brasil. KUNSTHALLE São Paulo invites Swiss artist Loredana Sperini (*1970, in Wattwil, Switzerland) to present Mi ritorna in mente, her first solo show in Brazil. The artist’s work is focused on the fragility and vulnerability of the body, which is explored through the combination of both materials, whose qualities are of very different nature, as in its forms, that range from geometric figures, abstractions, and human body elements. This formal and material combination creates a strong tension and estrangement in the observer, who, on the other hand, is also attracted by the colors and textures and sensuality of forms present in it. In this sense, Sperini’s work has an uncanny aspect – a term which, according to Freud denominates something that, being both familiar and strange, generates in the subject a cognitive dissonance, who feels attracted and at the same time rejects the observed object – that triggers memories and recollections in our subconscious, and lead us to a deeper world. In Mi ritorna in mente the artist presents groups of works in different of materials. Five small porcelain sculptures are collages made from fragments of figures found in rubble of bombings of World War II, and purchased by the artist at the flea market in Berlin. Five other wall sculptures are collages of found objects in her studio, and molded in black epoxy. Some have only geometric shapes and include also other figurative elements. There are also two abstract paintings in wax, and an assemblage of colorful sculptures of hands also made in wax and butterfly wings, arranged on top of a mirror. And last but not least, one work in cement exclusively made for the exhibition. Loredana Sperini’s show continues the LX92 project, which reaches its second year, and is support by the Swiss Arts Council Pro Helvetia.
