Malaria is a major public health problem in
Mozambique. It is the leading cause of
mortality in hospitals of the country, ie almost
30% of all hospital deaths and estimated
prevalence in the age group 2-9 years of age
ranges from 40 to 80%, with 90% of children
under 5 years of age infected by malaria
parasites in some areas (MISAU, 2012). Thus,
malaria is the leading cause of death among
children under five age in Mozambique.
According to the UN more than 1,400 children
die every day in the world because of malaria,
being described as a "monumental tragedy".
For Mozambique, malaria is also considered
endemic due to factors ranging from climate
and environmental conditions as favorable
temperatures and rainfall patterns, as well as
sites conducive to mosquito breeding, the
socio-economic populations related to
poverty, inadequate housing and limited
access to means of prevention PNCM,2012).
Like other African countries, it is not only a
major cause of death, but also affects
productivity and contributes to poverty. Being
malaria recognized both nationally in
Mozambique, and international level, as a
priority the challenge is to help people not get
sick from malaria. So the PIRCOM intervenes
in order to change people's behavior by
training the Religious Leaders, Volunteers and
mobilizing communities to prevent and treat
malaria, sanitation and other public health
issues.
Porquê Malaria?
The PIRCOM is able to provide services in
the field of communication for social
change and raising awareness of behavior
for the prevention and treatment of
malaria. Our services and capabilities fall
into the following categories:
 Advocacy
This action is characterized by the mobilization of
Religious Leaders across the country based on
individual networks / personal and religious, to
create a single national network of advocacy to
support major advocacy campaigns against malaria
at the highest level among makers health policy

The PIRCOM presents itself as the ideal partner in
the response of the MOH in the operationalization
of the National Strategy for the Promotion of
Health, under which communities should engage in
the solution of their basic health problems and also

The PIRCOM is open to transfer the model

attention to groups most vulnerable to malaria
as pregnant women and children less than five
years of age.

PIRCOM comes from a network of Religious
Leaders who can mobilize locally influential
in many villages, towns or urban

Faith Leaders activity: preaching:

Training Faith Leaders
In 2012 over 556 Faith Leaders were trained in disseminating messages-actions prevention and
treatment of malaria;
This year were recycled 14 Faith Leaders and 67 Volunteers in disseminating messages-actions
prevention and treatment of malaria;
This year 76 Supervisors were trained in techniques for monitoring and effectiveness of sermons and
visits door-to-doors data collection

Dissemination messages-actions through sermons in places of worship
From September to December 2012 around 54.693 people were reached by the messages-actions
prevention and treatment of malaria. 41.022 people were involved by sermons disseminated by Faith
Leaders in places of worship.

Visits door-to-door to raise awareness about prevention and treatment of malaria
From September to December 2012 around 13.671 people made aware about malaria prevention by
volunteers through visits door-to-door.
In general the dissemination of messages-actions prevention and treatment of malaria through
sermons during religious services and visits door-to-door is key activities of the PIRCOM program
implementation.
The contents of the messages
Padronized by MISAU and OMS are:
Sleep under mosquito net;
Allows PIDOM (Intra Domiciliary Spray);
Go to Health Unit to obtain pre-natal care presumptive
intermittent treatment;
To seek prompt treatment within 24 hours of experiencing
symptoms;
Taking full of drugs;
Remove and cover any water nearby houses.
