Speaker Biographical Sketch
Gail Abernethy DO (UK)
Gail is currently president of the Canadian Federation of Osteopaths, the national
organization of provincial Osteopathic Associations in Canada. She graduated from the
British School of Osteopathy in 1982 and also practiced in London for 12 years in a private
and multidisciplinary practice. Ms Abernethy moved to British Columbia on the west coast
of Canada in 1994, and currently runs her own private practice. She is a founder member of
Osteopathy BC, the Society for the Promotion of Manual Practice Osteopathy in British
Columbia. Ms Abernethy is a current board member of OBC and also serves on the
Member Relations Committee for OIA.

Alain Bouchard DO (CA)
Mr Bouchard is a non-physician osteopath and has a practice in Montreal South Shore. He
graduated in 1998 from the Collège d’études ostéopathiques de Montréal, and received his
B.Sc. in physiotherapy in 1984 at Laval University.
Mr Bouchard is a teacher, lecturer and clinical researcher in the pediatric field (osteopathy
and school performance). He is the head of International Relations at the Registre des
Ostéopathes du Québec and was the chairman from 1999-2002.
Dr William Burke DO (US)
Dr Burke has served on the American Osteopathic Association (AOA) Board of Trustees since 2010
and has been appointed to numerous bureaus, councils and committees of the AOA. Dr Burke, a
board certified Family Physician and Fellow of the American College of Osteopathic Family
Physicians, is dean of the Ohio University (OU-HCOM) Heritage College of Osteopathic Medicine’s
Central Ohio campus in Dublin, Ohio, USA. Dr Burke earned his Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine
degree at OU-HCOM and completed his internship and residency at Doctors Hospital of Columbus,
where he served as chief resident. Dr Burke currently serves as Director of the International Primary
Care Educational Alliance. SInce 2007, as part of the China Primary Care Program Team, he has made
annual trips to Chengdu, Deyang, Leshan and Luzhou, China. He provided formal and informal
education on the outpatient approach to common primary care conditions and family practice
residency training.

Dr Carreiro is double board certified in Family Medicine with Special Proficiency in
Osteopathic Manipulative Medicine. She is a graduate of the University of New England
College of Osteopathic Medicine (UNECOM), where she is currently Section Head, Chair and
Associate Professor of OMM and DME/Program Director of Graduate Medical Education.
Dr Carreiro specializes in OMM, pain management, pediatric musculoskeletal and sports
medicine, and otitis media. She is the 2011-2012 president of the American Academy of
Osteopathy.

Maurice was appointed as CEO of the British Osteopathic Association in 2013, with a
background in marketing consultancy and professional education. Prior to joining the BOA,
he specialised for over a decade in professional association management, working with
accountants, payroll specialists, health managers and lawyers - all of whom share the common
cause of working for public benefit. Maurice was instrumental in advising the Council of the
BOA in defining and building a new development strategy, in essence setting the association
the goal to build universal acceptance of osteopathy as a normal and accepted part of public
health - one step of which was the corporate rebranding of the BOA as the Institute of
Osteopathy in 2014.
Alain Dubreuil DO (CA)
Mr Alain Dubreuil has been an osteopath since 2000 and is also a member of Ostéopathie
Quebec. He developed an osteopathic thesis on whiplash injury, concussion and hip drop test.
He received a B.Sc. in Physical Education in 1993 and a B.Sc. in Kinanthropology (cardiorehabilitation). In 1992, Mr Dubreuil became a teacher in osteopathy. In 2001, he became part
of Wales University Full time program in Montreal CEOM and a post-graduate level teacher
of S.A.T. (Canada and Germany).
Mr Alain Dubreuil is founder, member and president of Qualita, the network of chartered
osteopathic clinics. He is owner and founder of Clinique Alain Dubreuil and an Osteopathic
Board Member of the Coalition of Associations for recognition and regulation of osteopathy
in Quebec.

In July 2013, Adrienne White-Faines, MPA, became Executive Director and CEO of the American Osteopathic
Association (AOA), which proudly represents its professional family of more than 104,000 osteopathic
physicians (DOs) and osteopathic medical students. In this position, White-Faines is in charge of carrying out
the AOA’s strategic agenda supporting the organization’s physician and student members and its commitment to
promoting public health; advancing scientific research; and serving as the accrediting agency for osteopathic
medical schools, hospitals and health care facilities.
For 10 years prior to joining the AOA, White-Faines served as VP of health initiatives and advocacy at the
American Cancer Society (ACS), Illinois Division, where she was accountable for cancer research, education,
advocacy and patient service programs. Prior to employment at ACS, she served as COO at Chicago-based
Renewal Emergency Medical Services, a health care management consulting firm for hospitals and physicians,
and at Chicago’s Northwestern Memorial Hospital, where she oversaw a $600 million hospital redevelopment
project. She also worked as a health strategist with the New York City Health and Hospitals Corporation, and as
a practice administrator for a large physician group.
Emma Fairs DO (UK)
Emma Fairs is a registered osteopath who trained in the UK and worked for two years before
moving to New Zealand. Emma has been working in Christchurch NZ for the last 20 years in her
private practice. Her main clinical focus has been the Osteopathic Management of Obstetric and
Paediatric patients. Emma has been involved in the development of Osteopathy in NZ, both the
regulation of the profession and the development of a training programme. She was part of the
NZQA panel that accredited the Masters Degree in Osteopathy at Unitec, Auckland, and for four
years acted as one of the two Monitors for the supply of the Degree. Emma has consulted for OSNZ
and OCNZ. In 2010, Emma was appointed to the OCNZ by the Minister for Health. From 2011 to
present, Emma has been Chair of the OCNZ. Mrs Fairs recently completed a Post Graduate
Diploma in Pain Management with the University of Otago and is working towards a Masters thesis
looking into post registration clinical competency.

Ana Paula Ferreira DO (BR)
Ms Ferreira graduated as an osteopath from the Instituto Brasileiro de Osteopatia – IBO and
was registered on the Registro Brasileiro dos Osteopatas – RBrO in 2002. She works in private
practice in Rio de Janeiro and has taught osteopathy since 2003. Ana Paula has developed
numerous new subject curricula and reviewed many existing IBO training modules. She worked
as volunteer from 1998 to 2004 at the first public osteopathic outpatient clinic at Rio de Janeiro.
Ms Ferreira is the chair of the RBrO, where she has served since 2007. The RBrO is working for
regulation of osteopathy as a profession in Brazil. Ms Ferreira is an internationally affiliated
member of the American Academy of Osteopathy.
Marc Gauthier DO (CA)
Dr John Gimpel DO (US)
Dr Gimpel is President and CEO of the National Board of Osteopathic Medical Examiners (NBOME).
He has served in this position since 2009, and has been affiliated with the NBOME since 1995, including
former roles of Board Member and Vice President for Clinical Skills Testing. Dr Gimpel graduated with
the Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine degree from Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine (PCOM)
in 1988. He completed a rotating internship and family medicine residency training at the Hospital of
PCOM/Saint Agnes Medical Center and the Chestnut Hill Hospital/Thomas Jefferson University
program, and has a master’s degree in Education from La Salle University.
Board Certified and Recertified in Family Medicine, Dr Gimpel has served as Director of Predoctoral
Education and Associate Professor of Family Medicine at Georgetown University School of Medicine, and
he is the former Dean and Vice President for Health Services at the University of New England College of
Osteopathic Medicine (UNECOM) in Biddeford, Maine. Dr Gimpel is also a Fellow of the American
College of Osteopathic Family Physicians and the American Academy of Family Physicians.
Charles Hunt DO (UK)
Mr Hunt is Principal and Chief Executive at the British School of Osteopathy, London UK
where he has over 25 years osteopathic educational experience at all levels. Currently, he is
leading the school through a UK Government application to gain Taught Degree Awarding
Powers, which will allow the school to award its own degrees. He is also leading the school
through an application for Institutional Designation to gain direct State Funding for its
programmes.
He is Chair of the Council of Osteopathic Education Institutions in the UK, Vice Chair of the
Osteopathic International Alliance and Chair of the Conference Organising Committee. He
was a member of the Quality Assurance Agency benchmark working group reviewing the
osteopathy benchmark statement. He also chaired a number of other voluntary organisations.

Michael Mulholland-Licht DO (AU)
Mr Mulholland-Licht graduated from Pacific College of Osteopathic Medicine, Sydney,
Australia in 1985 and was registered with the NSW Osteopaths Registration board in 1986
where he served as an Advisor during the 2001 review of Osteopaths Act 2000-2001. He has
been in private practice in Sydney, Australia since 1986.
He lectures and examines in Australia and internationally. He is a past President of the
Australian Osteopathic Association and World Osteopathic Health Organisation (WOHO)
and contributed as expert adviser to WHO Benchmarks for Safety and Training in
Osteopathy from 2004-2007. He is past Chair of the Australian and New Zealand
Osteopathic Council, which is responsible for accreditation of university programs, teaching
osteopathy, and assessment of overseas qualified osteopaths. Mr Mulholland-Licht is pursuing
post graduate studies in Pain Medicine at the University of Sydney.

Ms Morin studied osteopathy at the Centre Ostéopathique du Québec (COQ) from 1996-2002.
She obtained a Bachelor’s degree from McGill University in Occupational Therapy and a
Master’s degree in Clinical Sciences from Sherbrooke University medical faculty. She is now a
candidate for a PhD degree and conducts a research on interprofessionnal collaboration
between osteopaths and physicians in paediatric interventions.
Ms Morin has received many awards recognizing her previous research on the relationship
between temporal bone dysfunction and acute otitis media in young children. She is presently
an osteopathy teacher at the COQ, a teaching assistant in rehabilitation programs at the
Sherbrooke University, and has a private practice in Québec, Canada.
Antony Nicholas

Antony Nicholas is the CEO of the Australian Osteopathic Association, the national professional
association representing osteopaths across Australia. Osteopaths are university trained,
government registered, allied health professionals. Currently, an osteopath undertakes a five-year,
University Masters degree to achieve registration in Australia. Osteopaths collectively perform
over 1.5 million consultations with people a year and generate over $200 million in the economy.
Antony studied Biological Sciences at Curtin University of Technology in WA, with post graduate
studies in Education and Natural Resource Management. Antony has a diverse career background
in education, dispute resolution and health, all within the not-for-profit sector.
Paul J Orrock DO (AU)
Paul Orrock is an osteopathic clinician and academic professional. He has lectured in osteopathic
courses at three Australian universities, and is Senior Lecturer and inaugural Head of the
Osteopathic Programme at Southern Cross University. Paul has a Masters degree by research
(Victoria University) where he investigated the relationship between pelvic dysfunction and gait, and
is currently studying for his PhD looking at pragmatic clinical trial methodology.
Paul completed a major workforce study of osteopathy in Australia, the results of which have been
published internationally. Paul has presented findings from his scholarly work internationally,
including the World Congress on Low Back and Pelvic Pain (Montreal), Quality in Osteopathic
Education (BSO/GOsC, London) and Innovation in Osteopathic Education (OsEAN,
Barcelona). Paul has also had a private practice as an Osteopath for over 26 years integrating the use
of osteopathy into family health care. Paul’s goal is to see evidence informed osteopathic medicine
offered in the health system to the whole community)
Dr Geraldine O'Shea DO (US)

Geraldine T. O’Shea, DO, an osteopathic internist from Jackson, California, is medical director of Foothills
Women’s Medical Center in Jackson. Prior to joining the AOA Board of Trustees, Dr. O’Shea served the AOA in
many capacities, including chair of the Bureau of Scientific Affairs and Public Health, vice chair of the Bureau on
Federal Health Programs and vice chair of the Council of Women’s Health Issues. A past president of the
Osteopathic Physicians and Surgeons of California (OPSC), Dr. O’Shea has served as chair of the California
delegation to the AOA’s House of Delegates since 2006. Additionally, Dr. O’Shea is a member of the Board of
Directors of the National Board of Osteopathic Medical Examiners and currently serves on the board’s executive
committee.
After seven years of service on the Osteopathic Medical Board of California, she is also the current president of
the American Association of Osteopathic Medical Examiners. After earning her osteopathic medical degree from
the Western University of Health Sciences College of Osteopathic Medicine of the Pacific in Pomona, California,
Dr. O’Shea completed a rotating internship and an internal medicine residency at Maricopa Medical Center in
Phoenix.
Rene Pelletier DO (CA)
René Pelletier graduated from the Collége d’études ostéopathiques de Montréal in 1998 where he
received the Louisa Burns Award for his thesis dissertation. Prior to his osteopathic training, René
earned a BA degree in Economics from McGIll university, a B.Sc. in Exercise Science (specialisation
in Athletic Therapy), and a M.Sc. in Biomedical Sciences (Rehabilitation option) from the University
of Montréal. René was a part time faculty member in the Exercise Science department at Concordia
University in Montréal and has taught in osteopathic colleges across Canada and Europe.
René was president of the Executive College of the College d’études ostéopathiques de Montréal
from 2006 to 2012. He is presently enrolled in a PhD program in Rehabilitation Science at the
University or Montréal where his research focus is on neuroplastic changes associated with chronic
musculoskeletal disorders and pain.
Dr William Strampel DO (US)
Dr. William D. Strampel serves as the dean of the Michigan State University (MSU) College of Osteopathic
Medicine and as a tenured professor in its Department of Internal Medicine. He was the first medical director of
the MSU HealthTeam. Dr. Strampel established preclinical education programs and facilities at three sites on the
MSU campus. Under his leadership, MSUCOM is now conducting research, teaching and providing clinical care
on five continents, including many impoverished developing nations. More notably, a program has been
implemented to produce osteopathic physicians for Canada. Prior to joining the university in 1999, Dr. Strampel
spent 26 years on active duty with the U.S. Army Medical Corps and received many military awards for his
service.
Dr. Strampel earned his Bachelor of Arts degree from Hope College in 1970 and his Doctor of Osteopathy
degree from the Chicago College of Osteopathic Medicine in 1976. He is a fellow of the American College of
Osteopathic Internists, is board certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine and holds memberships
with several organizations. In addition, he is a delegate to the American Osteopathic Association (AOA) and
Michigan Osteopathic Association. In 2010, Dr. Strampel received the Presidential Citation from the AOA, and
in 2011, he received an award from the Governor of Yucatan for helping to gain D.O. recognition in Mexico.
Jonathan Bailey Teyletche
Jonathan has been on the board of the European Federation of Osteopaths as the UK representative since 2009,
and now serves as their President. This gives him a wide perspective on the development and regulation of the
profession. He works in practice in London, and for 11 years, was a tutor at the British School of Osteopathy.
Jean-Francois Thout
Executive Director
Jean-François Thuot is the executive director of the Conseil Interprofessionnel du Québec,
which is the association of the regulatory bodies of this province, called Professionnal Orders.
He has been involved in the professionnal system since 1999. Mr Thuot is a Certified
Administrator and has a Ph.D. in Political Sciences from the Université du Québec à Montréal.
