Present position:
Permanent staff member in the Microbiology Laboratory of the Division Aquaculture
and Valorisation of Portuguese Institute of Sea and Atmosphere (IPMA) Co-responsible for the Microbiology
Lab. (National reference lab for monitoring bivalves). Member of the quality management system and of
IPMA scientific council.
Key qualifications:
Experienced in issues related to Food Safety: pathogenic and deteriorative bacteria (Listeria, Staph.aureus,
Salmonella, Vibrio, etc.) and viruses (HAV, NV, EV) detection by molecular biology and conventional
microbiology methodologies; Preservation by gamma irradiation, refrigeration, freezing, involving sensory
analysis, nutritional, biochemical and microbiological characterization during fishery products shelf life.
Over 25 years of experience in a broad range of Fisheries namely on research, maritime and food processors
training and project development. Experience in project implementation, capacity assessment of institutions
and organisations of the fisheries sector, training and institutional strengthening. Several assignments in
Africa, Asia & Bulgaria (between 1989 and 2013) as trainer, Lab. quality/accreditation expert and evaluation
expert. Project evaluator for FCT and Galiza funding system.
Worked on FEDER funded projects, supervised FSE funded projects, worked as counsellor for National
Managers for Pescas, ICPescas and Propescas within QCA II programme; recently national delegate for the
European Safefoodera-net. Participation in several research projects listed below.
