Full Description
The Quinta Póvoa Palhaça is situated in a breathtaking idyllic spot just 2 minutes up a dirt track
from the village of Póvoa Palhaça, 15 – 20 minutes from Fundão. Between Fundão and the
smallholding are various other villages en route.
Fundão has a weekly farmers market, schools, hotels, a campsite, swimming facilities, a sports
centre, an archaeological museum, shops and supermarkets of all kinds, it's a very beautiful area
with easy access, famous for its micro climate, cherry growing, clean air, friendly people, natural
beauty, archaeological interest, and the Gardunha Mountains.
The smallholding sits on a hillside surrounded by nature, in absolute peace and quiet, with
unbroken, far reaching, wonderful views across its own picturesque land and far, far beyond. The
land area is a vast 9 hectares (22.5 acres) with masses of arable land on the lower parts near the
house and a huge area of hillside wilderness above.
The quinta is beautiful and really is a smallholders dream. There is loads of gravity fed spring
water for irrigation and a really good fresh and clean, fast flowing spring for drinking water that
could easily be piped to the house. There are huge meadows, currently planted with rye, and big
fertile vegetable plots full of potatoes, beans, pumpkins and maize etc. There are plenty of olive
trees to make the years supply of olive oil and lots of vines for grape eating, juice and / or wine
making. There are fig, plum, apple and orange trees, oaks, pines and lots of lovely old majestic
cork oak trees.
A really old stone baking oven with a nice granite bench is just a few meters from the house.
There is a 90 m² building that was only used for storage but is actually registered for habitation,
another smaller outbuilding made of stone (with part of a wall down) and the main granite built
house (also registered for habitation) with a footprint of 114 m² x 2 floors, giving an overall build
area of 228 m². The ground floor was originally used for storage and animals and the 1st floor was
lived in. The walls are in very good condition but the house will need a new roof (a part of which
is down), and complete internal renovation. Once renovated, the house will make a lovely home.
The land expands to cover a huge area of wild hillside; from here you feel on top of the world and
can look down over the smallholding and for houndreds of kilometres beyond.
Some 50 meters from the bottom border is a lake, it's not actually on the property but it's a
beautiful thing to have bordering your land. There is no house or anyone ever there and is only
used to supply irrigation water to some land many kilometres away.
There are lots of lovely shaded spots to put up a yurt or tipi. There is no electricity but plenty of
solar exposure. The access is on a 0.7 km dirt track, a bit rough in a couple of places but this is
something we can easily sort out.
With all the qualities the Quinta Póvoa Palhaça has, it will definitely make someone a fabulous
home and smallholding.
