Location and itineraries
Do not use the GPS. Follow these guidelines instead:
Casa das Penhas Douradas is located in the Penhas Douradas, right next to the Capela de Nossa Senhora da
Estrela.
We have a heliport 100m away from the hotel.
Penhas Douradas is a small locality just “above” the town of Manteigas.
From Manteigas, you have two options to get to Penhas Douradas: via the EN232, or via the Estrada Florestal
(Forest Road). Both are very scenic routes with panoramic views, although the EN232 is slightly longer. For the
EN232, follow signs that start at the entrance of Manteigas. For the Estrada Florestal, take the main street of
Manteigas, and when you reach the Church of São Pedro and the Coreto (local bandstand), turn right. Follow the
signs to Casa das Penhas Douradas for 10km until you reach the hotel.
From Gouveia, take the EN232 towards Manteigas. At the top of the mountain, before the road starts to
descend to Manteigas, take the right, sign-posted Penhas Douradas.
From Seia, take the EN 339 towards Torre and Covilhã. Before reaching Sabugueiro, take a left on to the EN
339-1 towards Manteigas. At the junction, turn on to the EN 232, and follow that road towards Manteigas for
about 6km (3.7 miles). Before the road begins its descent to Manteigas, take the right, sign-posted Penhas
Douradas.
From Covilhã, take the EN 339 up the mountain to Penhas da Saúde, and after 3km (1.9 miles), take right on to
the EN 338 towards Manteigas. From Mainteigas go uphill towards Penhas Douradas.
FROM LISBON
Take the A1 north towards Porto. Take the A23, signposted Abrantes and Castelo Branco. At km 192, take the
exit signposted Manteigas, and then the EN 232 towards Manteigas. When you reach Manteigas, go uphill
towards the Penhas Douradas.
FROM PORTO
Take the A1 south towards Lisbon. Take the A25, signposted Viseu, until you reach Mangualde. There, take the
EN 232 towards Gouveia, but by-pass the centre of Gouveia, continuing on the same road towards Manteigas.
Before the road begins its descent to Manteigas, take the right, sign-posted Penhas Douradas.
FROM COIMBRA
Take the IC2, then the IP3, and finally the IC12 to Nelas. At Nelas, take the EN 231 towards Seia. At Seia, go
uphill to the Penhas Douradas.
