Mit Kunst- und Kulturgeschichte befasst sich der Düsseldorfer Künstler in
seinem Werk. Zu Ornamenten ethnischer Herkunft entstanden etwa regalartige Skulpturen und ganze Räume, die Jan Albers mit afrikanischen Stoffen
kaschierte. Entsprechend bekleidete er gemeinsam mit den Schülern die
Stifterfiguren an der neogotischen Fassade des Hansa-Gymnasiums mit Stoffen
aus den Kulturkreisen der Schüler, die sie hierfür zur Verfügung stellten.

The Düsseldorf artist concerns himself with art and art history in his work.
In response to ethnic ornaments, Jan Albers has made shelf-like sculptures
and entire rooms, which he conceals with African fabrics. Together with the
students, he covered the sculptures of the sponsors on the neo-gothic facade
of the Hansa-Gymnasium with corresponding fabrics provided by the
students from their own respective cultural backgrounds.

SCHULE WIRD EIN HAUS DER KÜNSTE
AUF ZEIT!
„Internationalität der Rheinschiene“ heißt die vierte Ausgabe des Kunstprojektes am Kölner Hansa-Gymnasium, der einzigen unesco-projekt-schule
im Zentrum der Domstadt. Dem kulturellen Potential der Region widmet sich
nun nach siebenjähriger Pause Art Special: Hansa und hat hierzu bildende
Künstler, Schriftsteller und Musiker zu Begegnungen mit Schülern eingeladen.
1996 bot die Präsentation von 22 bildenden Künstlern einen großartigen
Auftakt von Art Special: Hansa, der sich thematisch wie räumlich auf die
Schule als öffentlichen Raum bezog. Im Folgejahr wirkten neun Künstler mit,
und damals standen Performance und Musik im Mittelpunkt. 1998, zum
50. Jahrestag der UN-Menschenrechtserklärung, konzentrierte sich das Projekt
auf die entsprechenden Brennpunkte. Die Kooperation zwischen den Künstlern
und den Schülern von verschiedenen Schulen Kölns sowie die abschließende
Präsentation fanden bei dieser Art Special: Hansa Ausgabe an verschiedenen
Orten des lokalen Kunstbetriebs statt. Somit war das Hansa-Gymnasium
ganz im Sinne der UNESCO-Strategie mit der Kölner Kulturszene vernetzt.
2005 konnte Art Special: Hansa auf Einladung der koelnmesse auf der
ARTCologne mit einem Stand für sich werben. Unter dem Motto „Kunst ist
kein Luxus!“ erliefen die Schüler dann im Mai 2006 in einem Sponsored
Walk einen beachtlichen Betrag, was die Finanzierung des Vorhabens für
2006 endgültig sicherte.
Wie bei den vorangegangenen Projekten wird auch bei dieser Art Special:
Hansa Ausgabe jeder Künstler über Wochen von einem oder mehreren SchülerPaten begleitet. Diese fungieren als Vermittler zwischen der Kunst- und der
Schulwelt und moderieren die Treffen, Atelierbesuche oder Workshops, die
meist in der Freizeit der Schüler stattfinden. Während in der bildenden Kunst
und in der Musik die künstlerische Arbeit aus dem Zusammenwirken von
Künstlern und Schülern erwächst, übernehmen im Bereich der Literatur die
Schüler alleine den bildnerischen Part: Sie richten für jeden der eingeladenen
Autoren so genannte „Literarische Räume“ ein. In diesen MultimediaRäumen, die von den Begegnungen mit den Autoren inspiriert werden, finden
am Eröffnungswochenende die Lesungen der Schriftsteller statt.
SCHOOL BECOMES A TEMPORARY HOUSE OF
THE ARTS!
”Internationality of the Rhine Region” is the name of the fourth art project
at Cologne’s Hansa-Gymnasium, the only unesco-school in the centre of the
City. Art Special: Hansa is now devoting itself to the cultural potential within
the Rhine Region after a seven year hiatus and has invited fine artists,
writers and musicians to collaborate with the pupils.
In 1996 Art Special: Hansa marked a grand beginning with the presentation
of 22 fine artists, which was related to the school both thematically, as well
as spatially as a public sphere. In the following year there were nine artists
involved in the collaboration, on this occasion focusing on music and performance. In 1998 in the 50th anniversary year of the UN’s Declaration
of Human Rights, the project concentrated upon corresponding focal points.
In the case of this particular Art Special: Hansa edition, the collaboration
between artists and pupils from various Cologne schools, as well as the
following presentation, took place in different local cultural venues around
the city. In this way the Hansa-Gymnasium was firmly networked with the
Cologne cultural scene very much in accordance with UNESCO’s strategy.
Having been invited in 2005 by the koelnmesse to take part in ARTCologne, Art Special: Hansa was able to promote itself with a booth of its
own. Under the motto “Art is not a Luxury!”, the pupils raised a considerable
sum on a sponsored walk in May 2006 in order to secure the finances for
their endeavour later this year.
As was the case with previous projects, each artist is accompanied
by one or several pupils throughout this Art Special: Hansa edition. Their
function is to mediate between the different worlds of both school and art,
to moderate meetings and visits to artists‘ studios or workshops, which
mostly take place in the pupils’ leisure time. Whereas the creative work
emanates from the collaboration between artists and pupils in the fine art
section, the pupils take over the creative part themselves in the literary
sector: they prepare so-called “literary rooms” for the participating authors.
During the opening weekend, readings by the authors take place in the
multimedia rooms, which are in turn inspired by the writers.
„Tag für Tag“ nennt Kati Barath ihre Begegnung mit den Schülern aus der ersten
Gymnasialklasse und lud sie zunächst in ihr Atelier ein. Die Schüler staunten
nicht schlecht angesichts der großformatigen Porträts der Kölner Malerin. Sie
erhielten von ihr Tagebücher für eigene Zeichnungen, Collagen und Malerei.
Über einen Monat lang fand einmal wöchentlich ein Workshop statt, in dem
die Künstlerin die Tagebücher im Kreise der Schüler besprach.
Kati Barath calls her encounter with the 5th grade pupils “Day by Day” and
immediately invited them to her studio. The pupils were more than amazed
at the sight of the Cologne artist’s large-format portraits. She gave them all
diaries to record their own drawings, collages and paintings on a daily basis.
She held a weekly workshop for a whole month in which she discussed the
diaries with the circle of pupils.
DIANGO HERNÁNDEZ
Diango Hernández versammelte 100 Schüler in einem verdunkelten KlangRaum des Hansa-Gymnasiums und ließ sie dort Reden von Politikern aus der
ganzen Welt mitschreiben. Die Blind-Protokolle installierte der in Düsseldorf
lebende Künstler in einem Raum. Interessant ist in diesem Zusammenhang,
dass der Kubaner oft das Licht zum Thema seiner Arbeiten macht und aktuelle
Arbeiten dem Phänomen der Diktatur gewidmet hat.
Diango Hernández gathered 100 students in a dark room of the HansaGymnasium and had them write down speeches uttered by politicians from
all over the world. The Düsseldorf based artist then installed these ”blind
protocols” in a room. An interesting point in this context is that the Cuban
artist often uses light as a theme of his works and has dedicated current
works to the phantasm of dictatorship.
HENTIE VAN DER MERWE

Der in Antwerpen und Köln lebende südafrikanische Künstler hatte 2003 in
dem multikulturellen Südosten Amsterdams Bijlmer alle sozialen Gruppierungen fotografiert, die ein Hobby oder auch ein Leiden verbindet. Seine
Paten ermittelten Gruppen in der Schule, und so entstanden van der Merwes
Porträts von Jugendlichen, die etwa gemeinsam Musik machen, die sich
ähnlich kleiden – wie etwa die Punk-Formation – oder jene sexy posierenden
Mädchen. Cool blicken sie alle in die Kamera.
In 2003 the South African artist living in Antwerp and Cologne photographed
social groups in Amsterdam’s multicultural south-eastern suburb Bijlmer, who
have a hobby or a burden in common. His pupils found similar groups in the
school and thus van der Merwe’s portraits came about from young people
making music together wearing similar clothes such as the Punk crew, or girls
in sexy poses. They all adopt a cool demeanour for the camera.
ROSEMARIE TROCKEL

Bei den Treffen mit Rosemarie Trockel gab es viele Ideen. Erst wollten die
Schüler über die „Kölner Löcher“ arbeiten – über Dinge, die ihnen hier fehlen
beziehungsweise ihnen auf die Nerven gehen. Dann sollte ein Theaterstück
entstehen. Letztendlich kam es zu einem anderen Entschluss: Zum Thema Hass
suchten sich die Schüler bildnerische Ausdrucksformen.
The encounter with Rosemarie Trockel produced a lot of ideas. At first the
pupils wanted to talk about the ”Cologne holes” or gaps – about things
that they miss or that annoy them. Then they planned to stage a play. Finally
they came to a different decision: the pupils sought artistic modes of
expression for the theme of hatred.

JORGE LUIS ARZOLA

Ausgiebig setzten sich die Schüler mit dem kubanischen Autor auseinander.
Sie stellten bei den vielen Gesprächen fest, dass Jorge Luis Arzola, der als
Asylant in Köln lebt, Kubas Verhältnis zu den USA und den auch heute noch
von vielen Jugendlichen verehrten Che Guevara völlig anders einschätzt als
sie. Seine Literatur über Kuba und seine Stellungnahmen zu geschichtlichen
wie aktuellen Ereignissen dort inspirierten die Jugendlichen zu einem Raum,
der den Mythos und die Realität Kubas Gestalt werden lässt.
The pupils had an extensive and vibrant exchange with the Cuban author.
They realised through many discussions that Jorge Luis Arzola, entitled to
political asylum in Cologne, saw Cuba’s relationship to the USA and Che
Guevara, still revered by so many young people today, in a completely different
light to them. His writing about Cuba and the position he adopts in relation to
historical as well as current events in his homeland inspired the young people
to create a space that manifests both Cuba’s mythology and its reality.

„Die Kinder der Massai“ von Javier Salinas erzählt aus der Sicht eines
kleinen Jungen die sich auflösende Beziehung der Eltern. Er glaubt dem
ständig abwesenden Vater, dass es ihm wie den Kindern jenes vaterlosen
Stammes in Afrika ergeht. Die Schüler inspirierte der Roman des in Köln und
Madrid lebenden Spaniers zu einem Film, der auf Grundmotiven des fiktiven
Geschehens basiert. Der Klassenraum mit den Requisiten des Films dient
dafür als Kino.
”Die Kinder der Massai” [The Children of the Massai] by Javier Salinas tells
the story of the break-up of his parents through the eyes of a small boy.
He believes his perpetually absent father when he says that he is like the
children of the fatherless tribe in Africa. The novel by this Spanish resident
of Cologne and Madrid inspired the children to make a film, which is based
on the motifs of these fictional occurrences. The classroom filled with
props from the film serves as a cinema.
NAJEM WALI

Najem Walis Roman „Die Reise nach Tell al-Lahm“ schildert wie ein Road
Movie eine Reise durch den Irak, auf der zwei Liebende sich über private und
politische Erlebnisse austauschen. Die Verquickung von Realität und Fiktion
und die Gespräche mit dem in Bonn lebenden Journalisten und Romancier
regte die Schüler an, Aspekte aus dem irakischen Alltags in Installationen
umzusetzen: Da geht es um die Geschichte des Schleiers, um die der Frau,
aber auch um die Diskrepanz zwischen Schein und Sein in der aktuellen
Auseinandersetzung mit dem Irak.
Najem Wali’s novel ”Die Reise nach Tell al-Lahm” [The Journey to Tell
al-Lahm] describes a journey through Irak in the mode of a road movie,
upon which two lovers exchange private and political experiences. The
amalgamation of reality and fiction, as well as the subsequent discussions
with the journalist and novelist resident in Bonn, prompted the pupils to
transform aspects from everyday life in Irak into installations: it is about
the history of the veil, about the role of women, but also the discrepancy
between reality and appearance in the current conflict in Irak.

JAVIER SALINAS
40 so genannte Heiligenviten beschrieb der in Deutschland geborene Iraner in
Erzählungen, die im Viertel rund ums Hansa-Gymnasium spielen. Vierzig Leben
heißt sein Kurzprosabuch, das die Schüler zu einer Foto-Installation animierte:
40 Schüler, Lehrer, Eltern, Freunde und Bekannte wurden eingeladen, zu je
einer Geschichte beziehungsweise zu dem entsprechenden Stichwort ein Foto
zu machen. Diese Fotos wurden jeweils mit einem Walkman installiert, auf
dem die betreffende Erzählung zu hören ist.
The Iranian born in Germany describes 40 so-called hagiographies narrated in
short fiction that is set in the neighbourhood around the Hansa-Gymnasium.
His book of short prose is called Vierzig Leben [Fourty Lives] which prompted
the pupils to create a photographic installation: 40 pupils, teachers, parents,
friends and acquaintances were invited to take a photograph to each story,
that is to each corresponding headword. These photographs were placed
within the installation in conjunction with a walkman by means of which one
can hear the story in question.

STEPHAN FROLEYKS

Ein Archiv der akustischen Wahrnehmung richtete der Musiker und Komponist Stephan Froleyks in einem Schulflur des Hansa-Gymnasiums mit seinem
Klangkubus ein: den aus Latten und Drähten bestehenden Kubus nämlich,
an dessen Außenwände alle interessierten Schüler ihre auf Blätter notierten
Assoziationen mit Melodien, Klängen, Geräuschen hefteten. Sobald sich die
Zettel verdichteten, wurden die verschriftlichten Notationen in tatsächliche
Klänge umgesetzt und als Audio-Memory-Mix im Papier-Klangraum installiert.
The musician and composer Stephan Froleyks erects an “archive of acoustic
perception” in one of the school corridors of the Hansa-Gymnasium with his
sound cube: a cube made from slats and wires upon the outer wall of which
every interested student attached his or her piece of paper with notated
associations with melodies, sounds, noises. As soon as the attached pieces
of paper became more dense, the written notations were transformed into
actual sounds and installed as an audio-memory-mix in the “paper sound
space”.
ECHO HO/HANNES HOELZL

Die Chinesin Echo Ho und der Italiener Hannes Hoelzl arbeiten spartenübergreifend mit Video und Musik. Ihre audiovisuellen Stücke basieren auf
Klang- und Bild-Collagen. Eine Weltsprachenkarte erstellten die Schüler
gemeinsam mit dem in Köln lebenden Künstlerpaar und sammelten in der
Stadt Sprachen, indem sie selbst initiierte Gespräche aufnahmen. So entstand eine Sprachmaschine, die bei der Ausstellung im Hansa-Gymnasium
über die Herkunft all dieser Zungen spekulieren lässt.
Echo Ho from China and the Italian Hannes Hoelzl work in interdisciplinary
fashion in the field of video and music. The audiovisual pieces are based
upon sound and image collages. The pupils devised a world language map
together with the artist couple based in Cologne and gathered languages
in the city by recording conversations they initiated themselves. In this way
a kind of “language machine” developed from the mutual collaboration
between the pupils and the artists, prompting speculation about the origins
of all these languages in the exhibition.
CLAUDIA ROBLES

Die Interaktion zwischen dem Menschen und der Maschine beschäftigt
Claudia Robles in ihren Medienarbeiten. Die in Kolumbien geborene und
in Karlsruhe lebende Künstlerin lud die Schüler ein, sich performativ der
elektronischen Medien zu bedienen und zu eigenen Ausdrucksformen
zu finden. Körperhaltungen im schulischen Kontext machten die Schüler
zum Thema einer tänzerischen Variation mit Klängen und Bildern aus
dem Schulalltag. Das Ergebnis ist eine Multimedia-Performance.
Claudia Robles is interested in the interaction between man and machine
in her media works. The Columbian born artist, now resident in Karlsruhe,
invited the students to make use of the electronic media in a performative
way and to find new forms of expression. The students made body language
in the school context and theme of a choreographed dance variation with
sounds and images from school life. The result is a multi-media performance.
RALF SCHREIBER

Um die Herstellung von elektronischen Klangerzeugern ging es in den Workshops des Kölner Musikers und Bildhauers Ralf Schreiber. Aus Mini-Sonnenkollektoren und elektronischen Bauteilen kreierten die Schüler – mit dem
Lötkolben in der Hand – Konstruktionen, die Geräusche, Klänge oder gar
Melodien produzieren. Je nach Vorliebe entstanden sehr verschiedene
Klangwesen, die Bestandteil einer konzertanten Installation wurden. In
diesem Projekt arbeiteten Schüler des Hansa-Gymnasiums und der Kooperationsschule Königin-Luise-Gymnasium zusammen.
The workshops of the Cologne musician and sculptor Ralf Schreiber were
all about the creation of electronic soundrobots. With soldering iron in
hand, the pupils constructed instruments out of mini solar panels and
any electronic components – electronic gadgets that can produce sounds,
tones or even melodies. According to individual preference, a great variety
of sound modules were produced which ultimately became part of the
concerted installation. Pupils from the Hansa-Gymnasium collaborated with
fellow pupils from the Königin-Luise-Gymnasium on this project.
