In addition to its once successful merchant-marine history, the
Netherlands is also typically known
for its vast and prolific rural spaces
– hectares upon hectares of rich,
reclaimed farmland churning out
flowers, grains and all manner of
dairy products.
Despite the cheese, clogs and
other generally pastoral imagery,
the country has a rich industrial
history as well, including plenty of
urban spaces brimming with museums, stylish shopping districts,

see central Haarlem transported back in
time via costumes, music and a market
which all hark back to simpler times.

Flower Parade This annual parade
sees many floats, luxury cars and
marching bands travel along a 40km
route from Noordwijk to Haarlem. The

Haarlem Jazz Stad The largest
free jazz festival in Europe, this
event will feature many national and
international luminaries from the world
of jazz, all performing in the heart of

Amsterdam Dance Event A
fantastic, ever-popular event dedicated
to electronic music, with interactive

Dam tot Dam Loop The largest
running event in the Netherlands
is a 16km trek from Amsterdam to
Zaandam. With some 200,000 spectators

Woonbeurs Amsterdam Held in

sees four exhibition halls packed with

Affordable Art Fair Offering the
opportunity for wannabe-art collectors to begin their collection, this art
fair displays a large range of works

A city full of character and beauty,
Haarlem is a perfect destination
for culture vultures from all walks
of life. The city’s cathedral, large
churches, city hall and windmills
all represent the town’s rich history. Strolling through the serene,
picturesque Haarlem hofjes, or
courtyards, it’s hard not to feel
like you’ve been transported back
to the Dutch Golden Age.
The only Dutch train station
constructed in art deco style, Haarlem’s Central Station is a shining
example of the city’s unique
history. The Amsterdamse Poort,
a city gate constructed in 1355,
is just as magnificent today as it
was centuries ago. The buildings
lining the Grote Markt, including
the towering Sint-Bavokerk and

Dutch war fleet, dating from 1656.
This true Amsterdam landmark is
the National Maritime Museum,

museum will be opening its doors
on 2 October, giving access once

Windmills, old storehouses and
factories from centuries ago
await visitors who make the trip
up the River Zaan, just north of
Amsterdam. A manufacturing
hub during the 19th century, the
Zaan region was the world’s first
industrial area. The area provides
a glimpse into a vital part of Dutch
history, when the country was at
the peak of its prominence around
the globe.
During the 15th and 16th
centuries, the invention of the
sawmill brought Zaan shipbuilding worldwide acclaim. In 1697,
Russian Tsar Peter the Great
spent a week in the region studying Dutch ship construction. The
home he occupied, now known
as the Tsar Peter House, is now
open to the public.
Following the success of woodworking, the food industry took over
as sawmills turned into rice-husking
plants, paper mills and cocoa
factories. Both the Industry Wall in
Wormer, a row of antiquated stores
and factories, and Zaanse Schans,
with its old-fashioned Dutch homes,
stores and windmills, are beautiful
places to stop and discover how
the Dutch lived during this incredible period.
