In an episodic journey from North to South five directors, from Poland, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Hungary and Slovenia, present their view and vision of nation, identity and Europe: By placing their personal cinematographic imprint on multifaceted portraits of their home countries, in all their stylistic variety, they open up a broad space for encounters with the strangers next door. This film has been made at a unique point in history, that of a political reordering of Europe. As a result Across The Border is a journey through landscapes and mentalities, and an area which is vanishing and at the same time undergoing a rebirth – a serious, absurd, magical, funny and poetic crash course on new old neighbours. 3 Poland Polen Between The Doors by Paweł Łoziński A look at a past which still lives but is not talked about in the euphoria over a European future. A life on historically foreign soil: Elderly Poles, driven from their homeland by Russians onto land which was once part of Germany, live their lives across the river from neighbours who were themselves displaced. German apple trees and Russian water pumps illustrate the changes that took place in the previous century. Memories of being uprooted and the long journey into the unknown link people, while everyday chores bring them together. They have grown old together: Between The Doors is a latefall tightrope walk on the edge of life. “Everything has passed by so quickly. I feel like I went in one door and now I have to come out another one.” 4 Zwischen den Toren von Paweł Łoziński Miȩdzy Drzwiami by Paweł Łoziński Ein Blick auf die Welt von Vorgestern, die immer noch präsent ist, aber von der europäischen Zukunftseuphorie verschwiegen wird. Czuje˛ sie˛ jakbym weszła jednymi drzwiami a teraz musze˛ wyjs´ć innymi”. 5 Czech Republic Tschechien České Velenice Infinity by Jan Gogola Residents of the small town of České Velenice appear on camera and, with the aid of a border marker provided by the director, play their version of identity and nation: The mayor doggedly paints a picture of a happy “nature place” in which even human nature comes into its own, the cultural official laments the disappearance of the town’s culture, the go-go dancer philosophizes about the border between public body and private personality, and the philosopher climbs on fences and roofs to get closer to the endlessness of the night sky. In the Czech tradition of ironically analyzing language and the world České Velenice Infinity is a humorous semi-documentary staging of reality which reveals reality to be staged itself. Obyvatelé malého města České Velenice se objeví před kamerou a – pomocí hraničního kamene poskytnutého režisérem – hrají své verze identity a národa. Starosta tvrdošíjně maluje obraz št’astného přírodního města, ve kterém si přijde na své dokonce i přirozenost lidská, kulturní referentka naříká nad zánikem městské kultury, barová tanečnice filosofuje o hranici mezi veřejným tělem a soukromou osobností, filosof leze na ploty a střechy, aby se dostal blíž k nekonečnosti noční oblohy. V české tradici ironické analýze jazyka a světa je film České Velenice Evropské humornou, semidokumentární inscenací skutečnosti, která odhaluje skutečnost inscenující sebe samu. 7 Slovakia Slowakei Helpers by Peter Kerekes In the no-man’s-land of memory: Civilian helpers of the border police were often more effective at tracking down illegal border crossers and upholding the system than the army. Even schoolchildren were recruited. To Drobček the puppet the border of barbed wire was explained as follows: “There are people, envious people, who are bothered by the fact that we live here peacefully. They think about ways to damage our efforts. And it’s from these people that we have to protect our beautiful land, our blooming garden.” With biting humor Helpers tries to get to the bottom of the historical truth, always present but still not talked about. As the political system changes, the volatile situations caused by international border traffic give rise to new prejudices and problems. 9 Hungary Ungarn Good Luck! by Robert Lakatos Crossing the border from East to West and back again: Lali the Gabor Gipsy and his ethnic Hungarian friend Lóri from Romania (Transsylvania) journey to Vienna for the purpose of doing some business. The trip presents a contrast to clichés of bands of thieving Romanians, showing us two likeable heroes as they get lost in imperial Vienna between Mexico Square and a magical place called Stadlau, which turns out to be a flea market for junk. They try to find their way through a Babel of Hungarian, German, English, Turkish, Romanian and Romanes, in the end returning to Transsylvania and a snowy village where their families wait. Good Luck! is a view of divergent mentalities, humorous and rich in metaphor and contrasts. 11 Slovenia Slowenien Choreography At Sea by Biljana Čakič-Veselič A fishing boat on the tiny Slovenian sea maneuvers in a borderland created after the catastrophic Balkan war, on a razorthin line between territorial violations and a loss of identity. Silvano and Damjan, like all fishermen, depend on their luck with passing schools of fish, but with one difference: They aren’t able to follow them very far. The Slovenian sea is just six miles wide. Seagulls and marine animals don’t need to worry about borders; the fishermen must wait for their catch to cross from Italy or Croatia, then sell them to buyers in all nations: “There is a border, but you can‘t see it. The fish don‘t see it either. They swim wherever it suits them. I‘ve never seen a fish with a Croatian or Italian flag.” Choreography At Sea opens the space between the water’s surface and whatever lies beneath. 13 The Directors Die Regisseure Across The Border documents an area which is vanishing and at the same time undergoing a rebirth. When Poland, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Hungary and Slovenia join the EU, a fissure dividing the two Europes, or within Europe, will be closed – a seam within Central Europe. Five directors from the five different countries show this region as it is undergoing sweeping change, acting as travel guides and interpreters, archivists and agents provocateurs. The moral realism of Paweł Łoziński, the anarchistic and švejkian humor of Jan Gogola, the folkloric magical touch of Peter Kerekes, the new realism at eye level of Robert Lakatos, the picturesque and musical approach of Biljana Čakič-Veselič: The order of these five worldviews results in firstly a specific portrait of the social and political topography and secondly insight into five independent methods of cinematographic communication. The task set before the directors was to create a document of lasting value about their country’s border with the Über die Grenze dokumentiert einen verschwindenden und zugleich neu entstehenden Raum. The possible themes were limited to the border area and an episode length of 25 minutes. After frequent exchange with the project heads in Vienna, the result was five different concepts which together comprise a film journey which examines themes of central importance and issues affecting this part of the world. dargestellten sozialen und politischen Topographie, andererseits ein Einblick in fünf eigenständige kinematographische Sprechweisen. Paweł Łoziński Paweł Łoziński’s film style gives his figures plenty of time and space. But on the other hand, the tenacity of the camera’s gaze gradually reveals the true motivations behind human behavior. His films are subtle and critical views of modern Polish society. Z drugiej strony, wnikliwe spojrzenie kamery stopniowo odkrywa prawdziwe motywy ludzkich zachowań. Jego filmy sa˛ subtelnym lecz krytycznym obrazem współczesnego społeczeństwa polskiego. 1965 born in Warsaw/Poland 1992 graduated from the National Filmschool in Lódz (directing) Filmography (extract) 1999 “Sisters” Awards: 1999: “Grand Prix” Short Film Festival Cracow, Canal+ Award, Don Quichote – IFFS Award Cracow, “Society of Arts Award” Chicago, Cracow filmstudents Award, II.
