neanderland AT A GLANCE 2016
Discover
neanderland
Hiking
More than 150 years ago workers excavating limestone in the Feldhofer grotto between Mettmann and Erkrath made a sensational
find: the 40,000 years old bones of Neanderthal man. Not only is
he, possibly the most famous German, the centre of attraction at
the unique museum close to the place of discovery, but a whole
region bears his name today: neanderland, comprising the district
of Mettmann and its towns of Erkrath, Haan, Heiligenhaus, Hilden,
Langenfeld, Mettmann, Monheim am Rhein, Ratingen, Velbert, and
Wülfrath.
On different thematic bus tours through the neanderland, participants discover its cities from new perspectives and find out
about the many aspects of the region. The tours cover the entire neanderland, museums and their exhibitions, and give
exclusive insights into local and global companies.
neanderland STEIG
Art trails in neanderland
Blauer See (blue lake), Ratingen
In September 2014, the last sections of the neanderland STEIG
(in total about 243 km) have been opened. The hiking trail combines the natural beauty and attractions of the neanderland, and
ranges amongst Germany’s important cultural tourism trails.
Be active and discover new things on a day tour: visit the animals in
the fairytale zoo, hire a pedalo on the lake, enjoy plays on the natural
outdoor stage and much more.
Various traditional regional specialities are served as refreshments. During the tour, guides provide the participants with
interesting information on the neanderland.
A total of 17 individual legs lead along bathing lakes, through moors, heather landscapes, extensive woods and local recreation areas. Along its way
are museums, churches, historic and modern buildings, picturesque market places and much more.
In neanderland you will encounter numerous works of art in public
space. Walk on the ‘human traces’ trail in Mettmann in the conflicting area between man and nature, or move closer to art in VelbertLangenberg, the book town! Find art in Heiligenhaus around the
Museum Abtsküche, ‘sculptural manifestations’ on a trail through
Ratingen, and walk on the sculpture trail in Hilden. In Erkrath you
will find three art and hiking trails connecting pieces of art in public space with display windows of partnering shops, where works
of various artists are showcased regularly.

Tours of Discovery
We recommend early booking. The neanderland Tours of Discovery are not offered for groups. Please note that parts of
these tours must also be covered on foot, and it is advisable
to bring sturdy shoes. Tours are conducted in German language
only.
In the direct vicinity of the urban agglomeration on Rhine and
Ruhr with the cities of Düsseldorf, Essen, Wuppertal, Solingen
and Köln, the neanderland is an eclectic, attractive holiday area for
excursionists, nature lovers, families and active people.
Some of the towns fascinate by their lovingly restored historic
centres with picturesque lanes and squares. Lively town centres
invite to shopping sprees. An extensive network of hiking trails,
including the neanderland STEIG, attracts hikers from near and
far. Many cycle tracks cross the neanderland and link it with
its neighbouring regions. It is also a favourite destination for
other sporting activities such as water skiing or climbing. Families in particular will find numerous interesting destinations and
offers in neanderland.

One of Europe’s most modern museums is located in the Neandertal, where Neanderthal man was found more than 150 years
ago. It tells the story of mankind from its beginnings in the African
savannah more than four million years ago to present age. Regularly changing special exhibitions address the most diversified topics. The stone-age atelier offers join-in activities and workshops
for children, young persons and adults, and once a year there is a
grand museum festival.
From the museum, a trail leads to the world-famous place of discovery of Neanderthal man. Audio systems at stations along the
trail provide background information on the natural, cultural and
industrial history of the valley. All information is also available via

Panorama cycle track niederbergbahn
Learning from nature
Works by ten artists of international repute give a better understanding of the competing interests of man and nature. An audio
guide to the art trail is available at the Neanderthal Museum‘s
ticket counter.
The Panorama cycle track niederbergbahn was originally a railway
line that operated from 1926 to 1996 between Wülfrath and Essen.
The conversion of this line created a 40 km cycle track connecting
the neanderland cities Haan, Wülfrath, Velbert and Heiligenhaus.
One of the special attractions along the way is the
wagon bridge in Heiligenhaus. Numerous viaducts
on the Panorama cycle track niederbergbahn afford spectacular views and are impressive testimonies to the engineering skills of the past 100
years. The beautiful landscape and the cultural attractions make
side trips off the direct track worthwhile. The track has almost no
slopes and is thus easy to ride on.
There are programmes of high educational value such as on organic farms in the Windrath valley and Gut Hixholz in Velbert, Gut
Halfeshof in Mettmann or the biological station in Monheim am
Rhein.
