TERMINÄNDERUNG – CHANGE IN SCHOOL CALENDAR
The new date for the Theater AG I performances are Friday, March 20th and Saturday, March 21st at
7.30PM in the auditorium.
Neue Lehrerin ab 2. HJ – Frau Julia Sayer
ich möchte Sie hiermit darüber informieren, dass wir rechtzeitig zum 2. Halbjahr eine neue Kollegin
begrüßen dürfen, die uns hilft, bestehende Engpässe in Sport und Mathematik auszugleichen. Frau Julia
Sayer besitzt die deutsche und amerikanische Staatsbürgerschaft und hat in Deutschland Mathematik
und Sport für das Lehramt der Sekundarstufe I studiert. Sie wird in den Klassen 4a, 4b, 7a, 7b und 9 den
Sportunterricht übernehmen sowie in den Klassen 5a und 5b Mathematik unterrichten.
Wir freuen uns sehr auf ihr Kommen und wünschen Ihr einen guten Einstieg an der German
International School New York.
We would like to inform you that beginning with the second semester, Julia Sayer will be joining our faculty and
teaching the subjects math and athletics. She will take over gym class in grades 4a, 4b, 7a, 7b, and 9 and math in
grades 5a and 5b. We are pleased to welcome her to our school.
Diversity Day at GIS
Im Rahmen des ersten "Diversity"-Tags an der GIS wurde mit
viel Engagement und Freude an verschieden Projekten
gearbeitet. Die Schülerinnen und Schüler von Pre-K bis zur 4.
Klasse konnten hierdurch vielfältige Erfahrungen sammeln.
Die daraus resultierenden Ergebnisse sind in den Räumen

hinaus wurde in einem gruppen bergreifenden
Gesamtprojekt veranschaulicht, dass jedes Individuum eine
Bereicherung für die Schulgemeinschaft ist.
On Diversity Day at GIS, students in grades Pre-K – 4th worked on
various group projects. The students learned that each individual is an asset to the school community. You can view
the projects the students completed in the corridors of the Kindergarten and Lower School and in our Media
Gallery.
GIS Basketball Update
The 7th-9th grade German Eagles team
continued their impressive season with a great,
well-earned win this past weekend against
North Salem. The game was an exciting one, as
the Eagles came from behind (a common
theme in many of their wins) to force not one
but TWO overtimes against the Jayhawks and
eventually win by 2 points. Marcel Spies led the
team in scoring with 27 points but great

passing and rebounding by Luca Weishaupt (9th grade) and timely, clutch shooting by Benni Thomas
(7th grade) helped propel the Eagles to the thrilling win and improve their overall record for the season
to 4 wins and 2 losses. Next, the Eagles play on Saturday, January 24th, at 12:40 pm and hope to build
off this win in order to make the postseason tournament. (Link : Media Gallery)

NEWS FROM THE SCHOOL NURSE!
GIS Lice Policy
I would like to take this opportunity to remind you of the GIS Lice Policy, which follows the current
recommendations of the American Academy of Pediatrics, the Harvard School of Public Health, and the
Centers for Disease Control. Critical to the success of the lice policy is a partnership between the school
and home.
Please review the following key points:







Inspect your child’s head regularly for the presence of head lice. Look for small silvery nits fixed
to the hair shaft similar in appearance to dandruff, but not easily removed. Where nits have
hatched, live lice may be seen. Please check your child regularly, as an early infestation can be
difficult to spot. Always check when your child complains of an “itchy” scalp.
If nits or lice are found, please call your physician regarding appropriate treatment. There are
several lice shampoos available, however due to resistance the over the counter shampoos such
as RID and NIX may not be as effective as OVIDE which is available by prescription only. Please
discuss this with your pediatrician and/or your pharmacist.
Follow the directions on the lice shampoo carefully. Do not over-treat! Please note that cream
rinse and conditioners can decrease the effectiveness of lice shampoos.
Remind your child not to share or borrow combs, brushes, hats or scarves.
Children should stay home from school until they have been treated, and are lice free. Children
must also be cleared by the nurse prior to returning to class, and should come to my office for
clearance at 08:15 before school starts.
There is an open invitation for any child (or parent) to come to my office at any time for a lice
check, so please feel free to send your child to me for a second opinion.

Peanut/Tree Nut Guidelines at GIS
GIS has a number of children who suffer from severe allergies to peanuts, tree nuts and/or by-products
of both. We are asking for your full support in order to provide a safe environment for these students
during the school year.
Some Facts:
1. This life-threatening allergy is not simply an ingestion allergy. These children can suffer
anaphylactic shock and death from a trace amount of the allergen, which might be airborne or
left as a residue on a surface he/she touches. If this were simply a matter of not eating the
offending item it would not be so dangerous.
2. The number of children diagnosed with peanut/tree nut allergies has more than doubled in the
past five years.
3. Peanut/tree nut allergies account for 92% of all severe and fatal allergic reactions in children.
4. One in five children with food allergies will have a reaction while at school.
What will this mean to the GIS community? We are asking for your full support in our goal to make
our school as safe as possible for our children.
Information for Students:



Students are asked to voluntarily refrain from bringing anything containing peanuts or tree-nuts
to school.
Our cafeteria will not serve any products that contain peanuts, tree nuts, or by-products of
either.
Students will receive education at school regarding our goal to be peanut/tree nut SAFE,
including how to read food ingredient labels and the importance of hand-washing.
Information for Parents:



Parents are asked to voluntarily choose not to send any food item containing peanuts and/or
tree nuts to school in their child’s lunch box.
Parents are asked to voluntarily choose not to send anything containing peanuts or tree nuts to
school for celebrations.
Please read all food labels before sending any food items to school. Do not send any food items
containing nuts, or items that are processed in facilities which also process peanuts or tree nuts.
Information for Staff:

Staff members will not bring anything to school that contains peanuts/tree nuts or by-products
of either.

FROM THE PARENTS
Martin de Porres School – Winter Clothes and Toy Drive
Winter, Weihnachten, Geschenke – fuer viele unserer Schueler die schoenste Jahreszeit. Nicht so fuer
die Schueler der MdP , fuer die ein Geschenk zu Weihnachten oder eine warme Jacke bzw. warme
Schuhe nicht so selbstverstaendlich sind.
Fuer die Kinder der MdP School ist die Schule die letzte Hoffnung , den Weg in eine normales Schul- und
Ausbildungsleben zu finden. Die engagierte Arbeit der Lehrer und Sozialarbeiter der Schule ist
beispielhaft und die Liebe zu den Schuelern ist ueberall spuerbar.
An einem regnerischen Tag im Dezember fuhren 6 Autos voll geladen mit warmer Winterkleidung und
Geschenken nach Queens zur MdP. Nun schon zum dritten Mal wurden wir sehnlichst erwartet und mit
grosse Freude empfangen. Eine kleine Fuehrung durch die Schule und die Vorstellung einiger Schicksale
der Schueler hinterliessen uns nachdenklich, sehr betroffen und mit dem Gefuehl, noch mehr helfen zu
wollen.
Schnell wurde uns klar , dass Anregungen in beide Richtungen erfolgreich sein koennen, denn Carmela
Casas, Principle Assistant , zeigte uns voller Stolz die neue Salatbar, die die Kinder als Anregung nach
dem Besuch im Sommer an unserer Schule sich gewuenscht hatten.
Mit dem festen Vorsatz nicht nur zu Weihnachten einen Beitrag leisten zu wollen fuhren wir wieder
nach Westchester in eine voellig andere Welt obwohl nur 30 km entfernt …

Winter, Christmas, gifts – for most of our students this is their favorite time of the year. Not so much for the
students of MdP, as gifts for Christmas or a warm jacket, even warm shoes, is not a matter of course. For these
students the MdP School is their last hope and chance. This school provides a way to a normal life and education.
The love and support of all teachers and social workers towards their students goes beyond words and is
omnipresent throughout the school.
On a rainy day in December, 6 cars loaded with clothes and toys headed towards Queens. Now in the third year, we
were eagerly anticipated and greeted with joy and laughter. After a short tour of the school and hearing many of
the student’s tragedies, we were left deeply humbled, thoughtful and at the same time wanting to do more for
these kids.
Quickly, we recognized that inspiration is flowing in both directions. Carmela Casas, the Assistant Principal, proudly
showed us their newly installed salad bar, which kids, who visited our school in the summer last year, had wished
for.
With the deep intention to follow up with more ideas and projects, not just for Christmas, we drove back to
Westchester County into a completely different world, only 16 miles away, but worlds apart ….

The Newcomers tour for February (The Woolworth Building) is already fully booked. A limited waitlist is
open and if you add your name to the waitlist, you may have a chance to fill a spot on short notice.
