Mit dem 34. Moers Festival ist im vergangenen
Jahr eine Ära zu Ende gegangen. Burkhard
Hennen hat nach einer beispiellosen Erfolgsgeschichte die künstlerische Leitung dieses von
ihm ins Leben gerufenen Festivals niedergelegt
und damit ein großes Erbe hinterlassen.
Tatsächlich ist es weniger ein schweres, als
vielmehr ein gewichtiges Erbe, das ich antrete.
Kurz nach meiner »Amtsübernahme« habe ich
das Moers Festival mit einer schönen alten Villa
verglichen, die ich keineswegs abreißen, sondern
zeitgemaß renovieren möchte. Wenn es gelingt,
bleibt der Geist der Erbauer erhalten, und es
eröffnen sich neue Räume für neue Bewohner
und neue Ideen.
In erster Linie ist es mir wichtig, den risikofreudigen Weg des Festivals fortzusetzen und
Musikerinnen und Musiker einzuladen, die noch
lange nicht am Ende ihres künstlerischen
Weges angekommen sind, die ständig in Bewegung sind und unentwegt neues Material
erforschen. Gleichzeitig möchte ich aber auch
die Geschichte des Festivals, seiner Musik und
seiner Musiker lebendig halten.
Dieses Programm soll einen weit geöffneten,
durchaus subjektiven Blick auf die aktuelle
Improvisierte Musik im Juni 2006 werfen. Es
ist ein Angebot, »Neues« kennen zu lernen,
aber auch »Altes« wiederzuentdecken. Vor allen
Dingen ist es aber eine Einladung, eine ungemein vitale und abwechslungsreiche Musiklandschaft in vier Tagen zu erkunden.
Ein herzlicher Dank gebührt dem hoch motivierten Team der »Festival Moers Kultur GmbH«,
unseren Partnern und den Verantwortlichen
in Politik und Verwaltung der Stadt Moers, die
dieses Festival auch unter veränderten Bedingungen und trotz angespannter Haushaltslage
möglich machen.
The 34th Moers Festival last year marked the
end of an era. After a history of unparalleled
success, the artistic director and creator of the
festival, Burkhard Hennen, has resigned,
leaving behind an impressive legacy.
For me, this legacy is less onerous than it is an
honour to have inherited it. Shortly after taking
up office I compared the Moers Festival with
an old villa, not one which I intend to tear
down, but one I would, in due course, like to
renovate. If I succeed, the architect’s spirit will
remain and new spaces will open up for new
inhabitants and new ideas.
It is important that we continue to take artistic
risks with the festival and to invite musicians
who are continually moving forward, boldly
trying out new material, still making discoveries
on the paths of their creative careers. At the
same time I would like to preserve the history
of the festival, its music and its musicians.
The program is intended to provide an open,
completely subjective look at current improvisational music. It offers the opportunity to
experience something »new« while at the same
time rediscovering the »old.« Overall it is a four
day invitation to explore an immensely vital,
magnificently diverse musical scene.
Special thanks go to the highly motivated team
at »Festival Moers Kultur GmbH«, our partners,
and those responsible in the Moers city council and administration. I am grateful to all those
who, despite the change in circumstances and
a tight local authority budget, have made this
festival possible.

Zum Festivalauftakt das Ergebnis eines Kompositionsauftrags. Der norwegische Perkussionist und Komponist
Terje Isungset setzt ein Zeichen für das »neue« Moers.
Er arbeitet mit Klängen aus der Natur. Holz, Steine, Wind
und Wasser werden zu Musikinstrumenten. Hinzu kommen
elektronische und mechanische Klänge, Bilder und Überraschungsgäste. Im Zentrum: Arve Henriksen, unser
Artist in Residence.
Moers Festival begins with a commissioned work. The
percussionist and composer Terje Isungset has set a
course for the »new« Moers. He works with natural
sounds, allowing wood, stone, wind and water to become
instruments. In addition to these come electronic and
mechanical tones, pictures and surprise guests. At the
center is Arve Henriksen, our artist in residence.

Türköz wuchs
als Tochter kasachischer Migranten auf, lebt heute in
Zürich und fand als Erwachsene zur Kultur ihrer Heimat
Ost-Turkestan. Eine sowjetische Heimat, die von China
annektiert wurde. Sie versinkt nicht in Nostalgie, sondern
bezieht Stellung zwischen Religionen und Gesellschaftsbildern.
Dream worlds from the Silk Route between the past and
the present. The singer, Türköz, grew up in Istanbul as the
daughter of Kazakhstani immigrants. As an adult living in
Zurich, Türköz discovered the culture of her ancestral east
Turkistan, formerly considered Soviet Central Asia before
it was annexed to China. Rather than sinking into nostalgia, Türköz makes a statement using images ranging from
society to religion.

Marc Ducret kommt mit einer Band
nach Moers, für die die Bezeichnung
»Gitarrentrio« viel zu harmlos klingt.
Diese Formation ist DAS Gitarrentrio
weit und breit. Unglaubliche Grooves
erschaffen eine Musik, in der es keine
Grenzen zu geben scheint und die in der
intuitiven Kommunikation der drei Musiker Gestalt annimmt. Ein Trio aus Paris,
das Ducret sein Labor und seinen
neuen Beginn nennt.
The description »guitar trio« is much
too bland for the band with which Mark
Ducret comes to Moers. This formation
is THE guitar trio for miles around.
Unbelievable grooves produce music
which seems to know no boundaries,
and which takes shape as a result of
the intuitive communication of these
three musicians. Ducret describes
this Paris trio as his laboratory and
his new beginning.

»New Conception of Jazz«. Ein Anspruch, den Wesseltoft mit Scofield teilt. Wesseltoft wurde nach
einer musikalischen Begegnung der Beiden in Paris der Wunschpartner Scofields. Beide sind Trendsetter, die Musik spielen, die etwas bewegen will. Die schöpferische Begegnung eines Europäers und
eines Amerikaners symbolisiert, dass der Jazz in beiden Kontinenten erste Adressen hat.
»New Conception of Jazz« is the title shared by Wesseltoft and Scofield. After the two met »musically« in Paris, Wesseltoft became Scofield’s partner of choice. Both musicians are trendsetters who
produce music which is both influential and moving. The creative meeting of a European and an
American symbolizes the primary status which jazz music holds on both continents.

Seven musicians from seven countries unite in a musical
language of jazz and popular music with influences from the
Levant, the Balkans and Western Europe. It is a bubbly

Two long-lived festivals shake hands across the border to work out a fruitful cooperation. For their
2006 editions mœrs festival (_ d) and Music Meeting in Nijmegen (_ nl) present together two
special projects: Paris Touch (_ f) and United Women’s Orchestra with Michael Schiefel (d _ nl).

Im Nordwesten der USA und im Südwesten Kanadas gibt es eine bewegte
Jazz- und New Music-Szene. Vancouver ist ihr Zentrum. Da ging der Stern der
Inhabitants auf, die den Jazzrock der 70er Jahre mit heutigen Ambient-Sounds
verbinden. »Psychedelic Jazz« nennen Journalisten ihre Musik und feierten die
Inhabitants als spannendste neue Band Kanadas.
The north west USA and south west Canada are home to a progressive type
of jazz and a new music scene. Vancouver is the hub where the rise of the
Inhabitants began, combining the jazz rock of the 1970’s with today’s ambient
sounds. Journalists call their music »Psychedelic Jazz« and consider the
Inhabitants the most exciting new band in Canada.

Nach 20 Jahren spielt er wieder in Moers, aber nicht
als Relikt der Free-Jazz-Zeit. Die energiegeladene
Freiheit der Musik Peter Brötzmanns kann man inzwischen klassisch nennen, ohne dass er sich etwa
ins imaginäre Klangmuseum zurückgezogen hätte.
Im Gegenteil: Das Trio ist eine aktuelle Band, die die
Freiheit nicht aufführt, sondern lebt. (Achtung: Dieses
Konzert ist für zarte Ohren nicht geeignet!)
Peter Brötzmann returns to Moers after his 1986
appearance with Bill Laswell et al in »Last Exit«.
Far from being a leftover relic of the free jazz era
though, Brötzmann is an energetic performer whose
musical freedom can be considered classic, and
not in the sense of museum-worthy. This trio is a
modern band which doesn’t just pay lip service to
freedom – it lives it. (Warning: not recommended
for sensitive ears!)

aus phantastischen Welten, aus anderen
Galaxien. Henriksen befasst sich mit Musik
aus Japan und Bali, sowie mit mongolischem
Obertongesang. Manche glaubten schon die
transzendente Welt der Engel im Wechselbad mit harten elektronischen Sounds entdeckt zu haben. Eine Klangsuche, die noch
viel erwarten lässt.
Arve Henriksen’s current band loves sounds
from fantastic worlds and galaxies. Henriksen uses melodies from Japan and Bali,
with Mongolian overtone singing. Some
claim to have found in his music the transcendental world of angels contrasted by
sharp electronic sounds. A musical quest
that offers much to look forward to.

Von Beruf ist er Fischer, wie fast alle Isländer.
Und Filmautor. Als Singer/Songwriter ist er
zu eigenen wunderlichen Geschichten gekommen, die er vertont. Fetzen lauter Rockmusik oder Geräuschkaskaden montiert er zu
drohenden oder zärtlichen Mini-Dramen. »Die
Dateien in meinem Kopf haben keinen Ordner«
sagt Mugison und vertraut auf seine ungebremsten Phantasien. Da klingt selbst das
Wort »Rock ‘n’ Roll« geisterhaft.
Mugison worked professionally as a fisherman, like nearly all Icelanders. In addition
to being a singer/songwriter, he is also a film
writer who depicts his wonderful stories in
music. He arranges fragments of rock music
or waves of sound in either threatening or
gentle short musical dramas. »The files of
ideas in my head have no sense of order,«
says Mugison, and simply trusts his ever
active imagination, where even the phrase
»rock ‘n’ roll« appears phantasmal.

Ausschlaggebend dafür ist die Kooperation
des Festivals mit dem Paritätischen Wohlfahrtsverband. Die Barrierefreiheit bezieht
sich auf den Besuch des Festivals, seine
Internetseite und auf das Programm.
Moers Festival has been actively implementing a policy of accessibility since 1997, as a
result of its cooperation with the association
of charities known as the Paritätische Wohlfahrtsverband. Accessibility in this case
refers to the facilities available and provisions
made for visitors to the festival, the festival
programme itself and the festival website.
So werden auch dieses Jahr behinderte
Musiker auf der Festivalbühne stehen.
Der Paritätische Wohlfahrtsverband präsentiert Dank der Aktion Mensch die Konzerte im
Dunkeln. Hier soll das Hören blinder Menschen nachempfunden werden. Durch das
Ausschalten des Sehsinnes werden die anderen Sinne in besonderer Weise sensibilisiert.
Das Moers-Festival wurde im Jahr 2004
durch den ADAC als Best-Practice-Beispiel
für eine barrierefreie kulturelle Großveranstaltung ausgezeichnet.

For instance, this will not be the first year that
disabled musicians grace the stage at Moers.
In addition, the Paritätische Wohlfahrtsverband, in cooperation with »Aktion Mensch«,
is presenting the »concerts in the dark«.
This is designed to give the seeing public the
chance to experience sound and hearing as
blind people do. By »switching off« the ability
to see, the other senses become sharpened.
In 2004 Moers Festival was selected by
ADAC as a best practice example among major cultural events for its outstanding
accessibility strategy.

The UWO made a name for itself long ago. Its leaders, Christina Fuchs

In Ungarn sind sie die begehrteste junge Gruppe. In ihren Stücken inszenieren sie ein

Bootsfahrt über den Plattensee. Ein Film mit unterschiedlichen Bildtempi, dem man sich
kaum entziehen kann.
This is the most sought after young group in Hungary. Their pieces offer an iridescent interplay between strong grooves, free soli and the sparkling sounds of traditional Hungarian
music. Their concerts are like a wild boat ride over Lake Balaton, a film of fluctuating
images at different speeds which leave one mesmerised.

Nils Petter Molvær trifft auf Bill Laswell. Wieder
treffen sich zwei Musiker auf Augenhöhe. Bill Laswell
ist der Wunschpartner von NPM. Jeder bringt noch
Kollegen mit, Molvær den Gitarristen Eivind Aarset,
Laswell den Drummer Hamid Drake und den Perkussionisten Aiyb Dieng. Hochspannung garantiert!
Another American-European festival project: Nils
Petter Molvær meets Bill Laswell face to face.
Laswell is Molvær’s favourite musical partner. Each
musician also adds other performers to this collaboration: Molvær brings the guitarist Eivind Aarset,
and Laswell adds drummer Hamid Drake and
percussionist Aiyb Dieng. A guaranteed thriller!

She is young, comes from Chicago and belongs to the AACM, even though she now lives in
New York. Roberts is deeply committed to Afro-American culture, and this is evident in her current
performance »CoinCoin.« This is an extensive music/literary work divided into three parts representing the history, philosophy and transcendence of the Afro-American. In May she will present her
string quartet in New York, and in June she will join us with her acoustic band in Moers.

»Back to the roots« heißt ein Programm
von Jamie Lidell. Gemeint ist damit der
Motown-Sound der 70er Jahre, natürlich
aktuell bearbeitet. Journalisten nennen

Lidell, der Elektroniker und Perfomer,
ist zum ersten Mal mit dem Pianisten
Gonzales im Duo auf der Bühne.
Jamie Lidell’s program »Back to the
roots« is a Motown sound from the
1970s which, needless to say, has been
completely modernized. The media
considers his music »techno-funk« and
describes it as the »soul of the future.«
This is the first time that electronic composer and performer Lidell is teaming
up on stage with the Canadian pianist

They call their show »New Mediterranio«, part circus show and part musical ride through
the traditions of the old continent and grooves from the new world. DJs and dancers,
VJs and Sephardic songs ornament their performance. Their greatest desire is for peace

schreibt ein neues Kapitel für die spannendste Big Band der
freien Kölner Szene.
Jazz and thrash metal? Not a contradiction in terms for the
saxophonist and composer Axel Knappmeyer. In the musician’s
virtuosity and his rebellion against mediocrity, these two types
of music find common ground. Previously a drummer with a
»hard and heavy band, Knappmeyer opens a new chapter for
the most exciting freelance big band on the Cologne scene.

eine Reise, in deren Verlauf er seine Sprache
im Spiel mit anderen Musikern entwickelt.
Bemerkenswert die israelische Sängerin
Michal Cohen, mit der er zum ersten Mal
nach Europa kommt. In Moers spielt er eine
Hommage an seinen Freund und Kollegen
Christoph Eidens, dessen Instrument er
spielt. Eidens verstarb im letzten Jahr.
Stefan Bauer’s professional life is like a
journey on which he has developed his
own language through musical contact with
other performers, in particular Israeli singer
Michal Cohen, with whom Bauer will travel
to Europe for the first time. During his
performance in Moers, Bauer will pay
homage to his friend and colleague Christopher Eidens who passed away last year
by playing on Eidens’ own instrument.

Einer der großen stilbildenden Saxophonisten zum Abschluss. Dewey Redman kommt
mit einem Quartett, dessen Mitglieder schon lange seine bevorzugten Partner sind.
Redman hat sich musikalisch sein Leben lang gegen Vorurteile gewehrt und gleichzeitig
ungezählte Saxophonisten geprägt. Mit der Römerin Rita Marcotulli bringt er wieder
eine herausragende Pianistin mit nach Moers.
Our final performance features one of the greatest and most influential saxophonists
of the day, and a quartet made up of his favourite musical partners. Dewey Redman
has spent his musical career defying convention while simultaneously moulding countless numbers of young saxophonists. He brings the accomplished Roman pianist

Für die Projektreihe »the morning«, die wie
gewohnt von Samstag bis Montag Vormittag
stattfindet, werden drei Metropolen mit ihren
noch jungen Improv-Szenen im Mittelpunkt
stehen. Aus Beirut kommt ein Kreis von Musikerinnen und Musikern um den libanesischen
Trompeter Mazen Kerbaj, der das IRTIJALFestival (International Festival of Free Improvised Music in Lebanon) in Beirut organisiert.
The concert series »the morning« will take
place as usual on the mornings from Saturday
through Monday, and focuses on the up and
coming improvisation scenes of three different
cities. From Beirut comes a group of musicians
lead by the Lebanese trumpeter Mazen Kerbaj,
the organiser of the IRTIJAL Festival (International Festival of Free Improvised Music in
Lebanon) in Beirut.

Für die »Konzerte im Dunkeln«, die in Zusammenarbeit mit der »Aktion Mensch« und dem
Paritätischen Wohlfahrtsverband seit fünf Jahren
während des Moers Festival stattfinden, ist
unter der künstlerischen Leitung von Eckard
Koltermann eine neue Konzeption entstanden.
Im »Dunkelzelt«, das in diesem Jahr zum ersten
Mal zwischen Schloss und Rathaus stehen wird,
werden an drei Tagen unterschiedliche Themenschwerpunkte präsentiert. Allen Programmpunkten gemeinsam ist eine sehr ruhige, auf das
Hören in kompletter Dunkelheit ausgerichtete
Musik und Klang-Wort-Collagen.
The »concerts in the dark«, a co-operation
with »Aktion Mensch« and »Paritätischer
Wohlfahrtsverband«, has been a feature of the
Moers Festival for the past five years. Under
the artistic direction of Eckard Koltermann they
have received a new conception. The »dark
tent« for the first time located between the
palace and the town hall will be the venue for
different performances on three separate days.
What they have in common is the concept of
very quiet music and sound-word collages
designed to be listened to in total darkness.

Mit dem Programm »the night« startet das
mœrs festival dieses Jahr eine Clubnacht-Reihe
der Extraklasse: Zeitgenössische Clubsounds
der internationalen wie auch der lokalen Szene,
von Electro über Dancehall bis Breakbeat
und Avantgard- und Neo-Pop in der Moerser
Altstadt.
Die Einbindung der Club-Kultur in das Programm
des mœrs festival ist eigentlich nur die logische
Konsequenz der Entwicklung der Musikszenen
in den letzten Jahren. »Club Culture« hat sich
nicht nur als Synonym für jegliche im ClubKontext verortete Musikstile etabliert, sondern
die Verästellungen der Club-Musik in immer
neue Genres und Subgenres schaffen zudem in
sich Innovationen, die den vielfältigen Varianten
des Jazz nicht unähnlich sind. Um dieser Vielfalt
ein angemessenes Forum zu bieten gibt es
»the night«.

One new element of this year’s Moers Jazz
Festival is »the night«, a series of top class
club nights in the middle of the old town featuring contemporary club sounds both local and
international, ranging from electronic to dancehall, breakbeat, avant garde and neo pop.
This new integration of club culture into the
programme of the moers festival is the logical
consequence of developments in the music
scene in recent years. »Club culture« is not
just a synonym for all the musical and artistic
styles which have their origin in the club scene
– the way that club music is constantly evolving and dividing into new genres and subgenres gives it an innovative and diverse character not dissimilar to that of jazz. »the night«
is a way of providing an appropriate forum for
this variety.
Urban Delights macht als Live-Act Moers
die Aufwartung. Frontmann Harry K., der schon
in den 90er Jahren mit Apollo 440 die Breakund Big-Beat Szene anführte, produziert und
performt jetzt mit Malte H. Breakbeats für das
21. Jahrhundert. Auch Malente, der genau wie
Urban Delights auf Unique Records veröffentlicht, hat sich einen festen Platz in der ElectroBreak-Szene erarbeitet und wird von Sydney
bis Dallas für seine DJ-Sets gefeiert. Deutsche
&Albaner, das DJ-Duo der Elektro-DJanes aus
Stuttgart, runden diese Beat-Sause ab!
Wer sich im Reggae und Dancehall zu Hause
fühlt, bekommt mit dem Live-Act Jahcoustix
und den DJs der Culturerock Crew das
Rundum-Jamaika-Sorglos-Paket auf die Ohren.
Nicht weniger Spannendes kommt aus der
Avant Pop-Ecke: Mambo Kurt, ein Unikum in
Deutschland, ist mit seiner Mischung aus
skurriler Popmusik und Stage-Performance der
perfekte Zwerch- und Trommelfell-Beglücker!
Auch Johnny Liebling huldigt dem Pop – vor
allem mit seinen vielschichtigen Texten, die
immer mit einem gewissen Augenzwinkern
daherkommen. Lokaler Support kommt von
Jansen aus Krefeld, Henry Storch aus Düsseldorf, Turbo Pascale aus Köln und Ancient
Astronauts & Kinski aus Moers.

Malente, whose music also appears on
Unique Records, has spent years carving out
a niche for himself in the electro break scene,

DJ sets and work as a producer. Deutsche
&Albaner, the electronic DJane duo from
Stuttgart, provide the cherry on the breakbeat
cake. For anyone who feels more at home
with reggae and dancehall, Jamaica comes to
Moers in the form of live act Jahcoustix and
the DJs of the Culturerock Crew. Excitement
is also promised on the avant garde pop front.
Mambo Kurt is something quite unique in
Germany, and his bizarre mixture of pop and
stage performance will have your stomach
muscles and ear drums working overtime!
Johnny Liebling is another pop devotee, and
his masterful lyrics – always delivered with
an ironic wink – are winning him a growing
community of fans all over Germany.

herzlich einladen, den Moerser Freizeitpark
während des Festivals auf den zugelassenen

Dies ist allerdings nur weiterhin kostenfrei möglich, wenn alle zusammen an dem großen Müllproblem arbeiten. In den vergangenen Jahren
glich der Freizeitpark während und nach dem
Festival einer riesigen Müllhalde. Viel Personal,
Geld und Energie wurde notwendig, um die
Grünflächen des Parks wiederherzustellen.
Wir stellen kostenlos Mülltüten an den gekennzeichneten Info-Ständen zur Verfügung, die
mehrfach täglich von unseren Teams an den
Wegrändern eingesammelt werden. Weiterhin

Free camping
Free camping, but please clean up!
Tents
People wishing to camp should arrive on
Friday, 02.06. from 10 am.
Tents can be pitched in the Freizeitpark up
to where it meets Venloer Straße.
Dear festival guests,
As in previous years, you are very welcome
to use the Freizeitpark as a campsite during
the Moers Festival.
However, to keep this service free we all need
to work together on the huge rubbish problem
that arises every year. During and after the
festival, the park invariably resembles a giant
rubbish dump, requiring lots of staff, time and
money to return it to its original green and
pleasant state.
Camper vans and caravans
People with camper vans should arrive on
Friday, 02.06. from 10 am. Directions will be
given on arrival. It is not possible to book a
place in advance. A new site is available this
year very close to the festival grounds – the
Platanen- und Bolzplatz in the Freizeit park
(a map for those arriving with camper vans can
be downloaded under www.moers.de/festival.).
The previous years’ sites around the ice rink
are no longer in use.
Headsets only!
We ask for your understanding that it is forbidden to bring or use public sound systems of
any kind on the festival site. However, we do
recommend bringing VHF receivers and head
or earphones, because we will be broadcasting the concerts from the Festivalzelt and »the
night« via VHF over the festival site and the
Moers urban area .

Free rubbish bags are provided at the information stands, and our teams will come round
to collect these several times a day from the
sides of the paths. Skips and rubbish bins are
of course available too.
