Alumni and
Scholarship Holder
Meeting in November
On Thursday, Nov 22, the DAAD Sydney held a
combined meeting of German scholarship
holders from Australia and New Zealand and
German and Australian DAAD alumni. The first
group met at Sydney University in the morning,
followed by a very interesting talk by Diané
Ranck, Executive Manager (International &
Development, Health) on Sydney University as
well as the Australian and German university
systems. Afterwards, the scholarship holders
were treated to a "Spurensuche" city walk
(www.Shpoorenzoohe.com.au) and then visited the Goethe-Institut Sydney for cakes, coffee
and discussions on various topics such as studying in Australasia and career opportunities
in Australia and Germany.
In the evening, two German alumni, Claudia Möller und Gislind Seitz had organised an
alumni meeting. After a reception with sparkling
wine and some nibblies, the German Consul
General welcomed the guests, especially Kai
Peters, General Manager Lufthansa Australia,
who then gave an highly insightful talk on the
development of the aviation industry and its
career opportunities. Rob Malicki, director of the
Australian Institute for Mobility Overseas (AIM
Overseas), then presented his project AXAN
(Australian Exchange Alumni Network, more
information below!).
The evening ended with a scrumptious buffet and many discussions and conversations on
the terrace of the Goethe-Institut. The scholarship holder meeting then continued the next
morning in Manly for a two-hour surfing class that was great fun for everyone involved.

Did you study, do research or teach in Germany? If you did, you can be part of an
international network and extend your professional and social contacts. We want to develop,
maintain, and promote contacts to provide useful information around the network. The
project is coordinated by the DAAD on behalf of the German Federal Foreign Office.
Joining the network will give you access to a worldwide alumni network, contacts at German
universities, institutions and companies, access to workshops and trainings as well as new
career opportunities.
There's also an alumni newsletter, published three times a year. It is mainly aimed at
German alumni. You can take a look at the most recent newsletter here:

AXAN is the Australian Exchange Alumni Association Inc. It is about sharing the energy
and incredible experience that is studying overseas. You can join this not-for-profit
association for free. Its aim is to create a network for anyone who has studied overseas
on some form of exchange program as part of their education. AXAN is also a network
for businesses who want to discover, and tap into, the world-class skills that
internationalised graduates have.

News on German Elite Universities
On Oct 19, the results of the second round of the Federal Government's Initiative for
Excellence were announced. By promoting top-class university research, the initiative
aims at establishing internationally visible research beacons in Germany. Decisions are
made in three areas: Research Schools for young scientists, Excellence Clusters and
Future Concepts.
Among the winning Research Schools were the Bayreuth International Graduate School
of African Studies at Bayreuth University as well as the Graduate School of
Computational Engineering "Beyond Traditional Sciences" at TU Darmstadt. Awarded for
their Excellence Clusters were, among others, the Johann Wolfgang Goethe University
Frankfurt for their project "Main Formation of Normative Orders" and the University of
Hamburg for "Integrated Climate System Analysis and Prediction".
The most prestigious awards for Future Concepts, which aim to heighten the profile of up
to ten selected "elite universities" went to Technische Hochschule Aachen, Freie
Universität Berlin, Albert-Ludwigs-Universität Freiburg, Georg-August-Universität
Göttingen, Ruprecht-Karls-Universität Heidelberg and Universität Konstanz.

The inaugural round of funding for 2008 and 2009 collaborative research projects was a
huge success with 26 projects being selected from 93 proposals. Because of the number
and quality of applications, the Go8 and the DAAD have also agreed to increase funding
for the scheme in the future. A second application round will commence during the first
half of 2008 for exchanges in 2009 and 2010.
The scheme is a joint initiative of Go8 universities and the DAAD and aims to foster
research collaboration between Australian and German researchers. It will support
exchanges for Australian researchers to spend time at partner institutions in Germany
and for collaborating German researchers to spend time at Go8 universities.
It is hoped that the scheme will result in research outcomes and
the exchange of skills and knowledge of mutual benefit to
Australia and Germany. Particular preference is given to projects
that facilitate exchanges between early career researchers.
Among the selected proposals were such diverse research projects as "Optimisation of
of Grid Interfaces to Wind Energy Plants", led by Saman Halgamuge (University of
Melbourne) and Rudolf Kruse (Magdeburg University), and "Diversity and Social
Protection among Turkish residents in Germany and Australia", led by Wendy Ann
Smith (Monash) and Claudia Derichs (Hildesheim University).

The scholarship year started off as usual with a first round of Research Grants for
Doctoral Candidates, Young Academics and Scientists of up to 6 months (application
deadline 31.3.07). 4 out of 8 applications received were successful, compared to 4 out of
7 in 2006.
In August, we had a really good response from Winterkurs applicants despite the earlier
application deadline (just two weeks after Term 2 started). 67 people applied, of which
21 were awarded a scholarship (2006: 67/25). With our One-Semester Scholarships for
University Students Reading German Studies, we had a similar number of applicants as
last year, with 21 applications of which 10 were successful (2006: 24/10).
For our second deadline for Research Grants for Doctoral Candidates, Young
Academics and Scientists of up to 6 months (deadline 30.9.07), we received 5
applications. Outcomes haven't been announced yet. This means we've had slightly less
applications than last year (2006: 7, of which 3 were successful). However, there was a
big increase in applications for Research Grants for Doctoral Candidates, Young
Academics and Scientists of over 6 months (Deadline 30.9.07), with 7 applications.
Outcomes haven't been decided yet, but last year we only received 3 applications for this
programme, of which 2 were successful.
We also experienced a huge increase in applications for Study Scholarships for
Graduates of All Disciplines (Deadline 30.9.07) with 13 applications. Last year, we only
received 7 applications for this programme, of which 3 were successful. Outcomes for
this year's applications haven't been announced yet.
Our Study Scholarships for Artists experienced a big decrease in applicants with only 3
people applying, among them just one for music. The deadline was 30.9.07 and
decisions haven't been made yet. In comparison, last year we received 12 applications
(among them 7 for music), with 3 of them being successful.
We've also had a new pilot project, the ASKO-DAAD scholarship course "Encounter
Europe" in cooperation with the European Academy in Otzenhausen, Germany. We were
able to sponsor 24 Australian students to go on this exciting 2-week course, and we
hope to be able to set up this programme again next year.

Von Darwin bis Adelaide fand vom 21. bis 28. Oktober
2007 die World Solar Challenge, eine Wettreise von
Solarautos, statt.
eindrucksvollen Bildern festgehalten.

From the 21st to the 28th October 2007 the World Solar Challenge, a
race of solar cars from Darwin to Adelaide, took place. Among 41
Teams of 18 countries Chile participated for the first time. Rodrigo
Palma Behnke and Carlos Gherardelli Dezerega, both Chilean DAADAlumni from the Universidad de Chile, were the leaders of the team.
The IC in Santiago brought a film and photo project into being in order
to accompany both Alumni with the construction of the first Chilean
solar car 'Eolian' as well as its participation at the World Solar
Challenge. Eolian covered 1862km across the Outback. This
extraordinary journey was documented with impressive pictures by

Deutsche Unis stellen sich vor:
The University of Erfurt and Germany‘s first Master of Public Policy (MPP)
Program
The University of Erfurt was originally established in 1392. It
attained a reputation rivaling Paris and Oxford. Martin Luther
famously said, “If you want to study well, go to Erfurt.”
Unfortunately, after a period of decline, the old university
was closed in 1816. In 1994, the university was reestablished following German reunification. Founded to
serve as a model for university reform, it was among the first
universities in Germany to introduce BA/MA degrees
throughout all its departments. English is an officially
recognised language of instruction.
With a total student body of just over 4.000, Erfurt is a small
university, creating a sense of intimacy and community on
campus. Proximity is a major asset of Erfurt and its
university. Modern teaching facilities, a state-of-the-art
library and modern and affordable dormitories are grouped around a small park.
The university is family-friendly and has its own kindergarten. Associations such as
special interest clubs, sport clubs, friendship and partnership programs as well as
several choirs and bands provide opportunities to be active and make friends.
Erfurt is considered to be one of Germany’s most beautiful cities. The restored
medieval downtown area offers many historical sites and places. Close by are
UNESCO World Heritage Sites such as Wartburg Castle where Martin Luther
translated the Bible into German, Eisenach, the birthplace of Bach, and Weimar,
the picturesque city of Goethe and Schiller and the Bauhaus.
