February 2006
Such is not really a completely
new practice. Standing, which
is a sign of respect, reverence
and honor, has been understood, from the earliest days of
the Church, as the stance of
those who are risen with Christ
and seek the things that are
above (see Colossians 5).
When we stand for prayer, we
are assuming our stature
before God as a people
redeemed by the blood of
Christ. We stand when the
celebrant and the other ministers process into the church.
We stand for the Gospel
because we acknowledge that
it is Christ himself speaking to
us when it is proclaimed.
For the first millennium of the
Church, standing was the norm
throughout the Mass (there
were provisions in the church
space for sitting), the people
stood with the presider and
usually assumed the presider’s
gestures (such as bowing or
raising one’s arms in prayer).
By the time Eucharistic piety
was heightened in the 13th
century and the elevations of
the Eucharistic bread and
chalice were introduced into
Mass (because the assembly
no longer regularly
received
Communion), kneeling during
the Eucharistic Prayer (called
“canon” then) became the
norm in the Western Church, a
posture which expressed not
only the humility of the
assembly but was also a way
for the assembly to honor the
Blessed Sacrament. However,
even during the Middle Ages,
kneeling was not always the
posture during the Eucharistic
Prayer; standing was still
prescribed for Sundays, Easter
Season and special feasts.
Therefore, it is also well to
remember that standing is truly
a posture of respect and,
indeed, the ancient posture for
all during the Eucharistic
Prayer.
In the present time, the
English translation of the
General Instruction of the
Roman
Missal (3rd Typical
Edition) 2002 by the
International
Committee on
English in the Liturgy on
speaking about movements
and gestures in the Mass
states that, “The faithful should
stand from the beginning of the
Entrance chant, or while the
priest approaches the altar,
until the end of the Collect; for
the Alleluia chant before the
Gospel;
Cont’d on page 2
Cont’d from page 1
while the Gospel itself is proclaimed;
during the Profession of Faith and the
Prayer of the Faithful; from the invitation, Orate, fraters (Pray, brethren),
before the prayer over the offerings
until the end of Mass…” (par. 43)

sh Wednesday this year falls
on March 1.
It is called 'Day of Ashes' because on
that day at church the faithful have
their foreheads marked with ashes in
the shape of a cross. (Traditionally,
the ashes for the Ash Wednesday
service come from burning the palms
from the previous year’s Palm Sunday
celebration.)
In the Old Testament, ashes were
found to have been used for two
purposes: as a sign of humility and
mortality; and as a sign of sorrow and
repentance for sin. The Christian
connotation for ashes in the liturgy of
Ash Wednesday has also been taken
from this Old Testament biblical
custom.
Ash Wednesday more importantly
marks the onset of the Lent, a 40 day
period before Easter. In the western
Church, we skip over the Sundays
when we count the days of Lent,
because Sunday is always the joyful
celebration of the Resurrection.

12:30h
Ash Wednesday and Good Friday are
days of universal fast and abstinence
in the Church. On those days,
Catholics 14 years old and older must
abstain from meat, while Catholics
between the ages of 18 and 59 are
obliged to fast.
Fasting means partaking of only one
full meal. Some food (not equalling
another full meal) is permitted at
breakfast and around midday or in the
evening—depending on when a
person chooses to eat the main or full
meal.
A person with illness is excluded from
the obligations of fasting and
abstinence.
