Careum in brief “Thinking about the future of health and care” As an independent institution for future-oriented issues relating to education in the healthcare sector, Careum aims to provide new impetus to continuing education and training in order to sufficiently prepare future actors in the healthcare sector for the tasks they will face. Established in 1882 as the Stiftung Schwesternschule und Krankenhaus vom Roten Kreuz in Zürich Fluntern, a nursing college and hospital, the Careum Foundation now sees itself as an organisation which promotes dialogue between the stakeholders in healthcare, and which invests in young talents who are envisioning the future of health and care. The object of the foundation is: “The Foundation promotes education in healthcare through innovation and development.” Careum endeavours to show how trends in healthcare can be translated into specific education policy projects. The aim is to provide inspiration, how to shape the future of education in health and care. Through the Careum Congress, the Careum Forum, and the Careum Dialogue, Careum offers attractive platforms for exchanging ideas on forward-looking issues relevant to education in the healthcare sector. Careum is independent, and financed by the income from foundation assets, on the one hand, and third-party funding that it has succeeded in attracting from other foundations and state-run agencies, on the other. Large-scale projects are achieved in association with partners. Careum has three divisions: Careum Education Development, Careum Research and Careum Publishing. The Foundation also holds participations in three institutions covering different levels of education: Kalaidos University of Applied Sciences, Department of Health, Careum Bildungszentrum Zürich (Training Center) and Careum Weiterbildung (Continuing Education). Careum Education Development Careum Education Development designs, hosts and evaluates educational events and materials in a variety of formats, draws up educational concepts, and offers online infrastructures complete with advice and support. Developments in education in healthcare are carried forward in collaboration with partners and participants. Careum Research As a research institute of the Kalaidos University of Applied Sciences, Department of Health, the activities of Careum Research revolve at all times around the capabilities and participation of patients, relatives, network partners and health professionals, with a particular focus on the home as the basis of health and healthcare. The objective is to work in interprofessional and intersectoral alliances to develop and test innovative forms of care and living, as well as user-centred approaches to healthcare provision, for community-based healthcare structures. Care within the family is one of the focal points of this research. Careum Research is investigating practical ways to balance this with other roles throughout a person’s career – primarily in the sense of “work & care”, but also “learn & care” and “retire & care”. Living with chronic illness and multimorbidity, health skills, encouraging self management and empowerment are also key points fostered by the Centre for Patient Education. Careum Research networks and coordinates the parties involved through its research, service and opinion-forming work. Careum Publishing Careum Publishing specialises in the production of learning and teaching materials for careers in the healthcare and social sectors. These modern educational materials are published in print as well as for electronic devices. The products are suitable for use at both secondary and tertiary level, as well as in continuing education. The teaching materials are developed in close collaboration with both Careum Education Development, and a variety of educational service providers, and are regularly updated in line with the current needs of the target groups. Careum promotion programs In line with the object of the Foundation, Careum's promotion programmes are devoted to education in the healthcare system. They encompass the promotion of young professionals and talents at various levels of education and training. Careum Bildungszentrum (Careum Training Center) Thanks to its ground-breaking, problem-based learning approach to teaching, the Careum Bildungszentrum is known throughout Switzerland as one of the largest educational institutions for healthcare professions. Careum Continuing Education is based in Aarau. Careum attaches great value to patient education as a means of fostering greater self-responsibility among patients and their families. Careum Continuing Education furthers the knowledge and skills of patients and their families through evidence-based programmes and new approaches of self-management support of chronic illnesses.
