Graubünden ist der einzige dreisprachige Kanton der Schweiz.
In der Kantonshauptstadt Chur überwiegt deutsch als
Muttersprache (ca. 80%). Mit italienisch, bzw. romanisch
aufgewachsen sind je ca. 5% der Einwohner.
Languages
Graubünden is the only trilingual canton in Switzerland. In the
canton’s capital, Chur, the majority of inhabitants (approx.
80%) speak German as their mother tongue. Around 5% have
grown up speaking Italian and 5% Romansh.
Klima
Chur gilt als eine der wärmsten Städte der Schweiz. Durch den
häufig auftretenden Föhn (ein warmer, trockener Fallwind)
und die durch hohe Berge geschützte Lage herrscht in Chur
oft ein sehr mildes, angenehmes Klima. Nebel gibt es nur an
6 – 7 Tagen im Jahr. Trotzdem sinken im Winter die Temperaturen oft an den Nullpunkt, wodurch sich in unmittelbarer
Stadtnähe tolle und äusserst vielfältige Wintersportmöglichkeiten eröffnen.
Climate
Chur is regarded as one of the warmest cities in Switzerland.
Thanks to the frequent presence of the föhn (a warm, dry,
downward wind) and its protected position amidst high
mountains, Chur often enjoys a very mild, pleasant climate.
It is only foggy on 6 or 7 days a year. Nevertheless, in winter,
temperatures often drop to zero degrees, opening up a
multitude of possibilities to enjoy a broad range of winter
sports in the close vicinity.

The largest train operator in the Swiss Alps has been providing first-class rail travel experiences through Graubünden’s

historic train compositions from the steam era and state-ofthe-art panoramic cars on the world-famous Bernina Express

Über der Altstadt thront der
Bischöfliche Hof mit der 800
Jahre alten Kathedrale und ihrem
in goldener Pracht strahlenden
spätgotischen Hochaltar. Es wird
angenommen, dass der erste Bau
im 5. Jh. entstanden war. Die heu­
tige Kathedrale wurde zwischen
1154 und 1270 erbaut und von
2001 bis 2007 umfassend restau­
riert und der Mariä Himmelfahrt
geweiht. Um den Hof entstanden
das Bischöfliche Schloss und die
Domherrenhäuser.
The Episcopal Courtyard, with its

high altar, towers majestically
above the Old Town. The first
building is thought to date from
the 5th century. The present-day
cathedral was built between
1154 and 1270. It was extensively
renovated between 2001 and
2007 and dedicated to St. Mary of
the Assumption. Built around the
courtyard are the Episcopal Castle
and the canons’ houses.

Glasdach und die Bahnhofstrasse
als Flaniermeile. Eröffnet wurde
der Bahnhof 1858.

Das Bärenloch ist der verwun­
schenste Ort innerhalb der Stadt
Chur. Die beiden Innenhöfe sind
zugleich der am besten erhaltene
Teil der Altstadt und geben Raum
für Sagen und Legenden.
The Bärenloch, or «bear hole»,
is one of the most enchanting
places in Chur. The two interior
courtyards are also among the best
preserved parts of the Old Town
and abound in sagas and legends.

the Town Hall building appears
to be rather out of joint. This has
nothing to do with the politics, but
rather to the building’s history.

Angelika Kauffmann ist 1741 in
Chur geboren und genoss als Kunst­
malerin grosse Bewunderung.
Heute kann man im gemütlichen
Café der Künstlerin nahe sein.
Angelika Kauffmann was born in
1741, and was greatly admired as
a painter. These days, the build­
ing where she was born houses a
cosy café dedicated to the artist.

Mit dem Malteser und Sennhof­
turm gehört das Obertor zu den
Turmbauten der mittelalterlichen
Stadtbefestigung. Durch sein
schmuckes Erscheinungsbild wur­
de es zum Wahrzeichen Churs.
Together with the Maltese Tower
and Sennhof Tower, the Upper
Gate forms part of the medieval
fortifications. Thanks to its
attractive appearance, it is one of
Chur’s best-known landmarks.
Peter von Salis Soglio liess sich
1727 zu seinem Wohnsitz einen
Garten, den heutigen Fontana­
park, errichten. Heute ist der Park
ein geschätzter Erholungsbereich
im Herzen Churs.
In 1727, Peter von Salis-Soglio
extended his residence by adding
a huge garden, the present-day
Fontana Park. Nowadays, the park
is a popular recreation area in the
heart of Chur.
In seiner Heimatstadt hat H.R.
Giger, Oscar-Preisträger und

Arcas
Malerisch und mittelalterlich –
so erscheint heute der Arcas. Bis
1971 verstellten Magazinbauten
den Platz. Der Architekt Theodor
Hartmann liess diese abreissen
und plante ein unterirdisches
Parkhaus in die Neugestaltung
des Platzes ein. Die Häuserzeile
gegen die Plessur hin wurde
an die alte Stadtmauer angebaut,
welche noch aus dem 13. Jahr­
hundert stammt. Heute dient
der Platz zum Flanieren sowie
als Ort für Märkte, Festivals und
Konzerte.
Picturesque and medieval – that is
how the Arcas looks today. Before
1971, the square was obscured
by warehouses. Architect Theodor
Hartmann had these demolished
and integrated an underground
garage into his new design
concept. The rows of houses ex­
tending towards the Plessur were
built onto the ancient city walls,
dating from the 13th century.
Nowadays, the square is a popu­
lar place for enjoying a leisurely
stroll and for holding markets,
festivals and concerts.

der rote Zug zur Gebirgsbahn. Auf
nur 26 Kilometern klettert die
Arosabahn 1000 Meter höher und
überwindet den eleganten Lang­
wieser Viadukt. Moderne Bergbahnen und eine eindrückliche
Bergwelt eröffnen im Sommer wie
im Winter diverse Ausflugsmög­
lichkeiten in Arosa.

Entspannter einkaufen
Chur ist das Einkaufszentrum mit dem grössten Angebot zwischen Zürich und Mailand. Praktisch alle grösseren Kaufhäuser
und Modehäuser sind in Chur vertreten und über 500 weitere
Geschäfte. Vor allem die verkehrsfreie Altstadt mit Parkplätzen
in unmittelbarer Nähe und zahlreichen gemütlichen Cafés lädt
ein zum Ladenbummel. Einkaufszentren am Stadtrand vervollständigen das Angebot. Die Ladenöffnungszeiten sind generell
von 8.30 – 12 Uhr und von 13.30 – 18.30 Uhr, wobei Kaufhäuser
den ganzen Tag offen sind. Am Freitag ist Abendverkauf bis
20 Uhr und auch am Samstag können Sie bis 18 Uhr einkaufen.
Das Designer Outlet Landquart mit mehr als 160 Designer
Marken liegt nur 10 Minuten von Chur entfernt.
Leisurely shopping sprees
Chur is the largest shopping centre between Zurich and Milan. Virtually all the major department stores and fashion
boutiques, as well as over 500 other shops, can be found
here. In particular, the car-free Old Town with its nearby
parking spaces and the countless cosy cafés invite visitors to
enjoy a leisurely shopping spree. The range of outlets
is rounded off by various shopping centres on the outskirts
of the city. Opening hours are generally from 8.30 – 12am
and 1.30 – 6.30pm, although the larger stores are open
throughout the day. On Fridays, the shops remain open until
8pm, and on Saturdays until 6pm. The Designer Outlet in
Landquart with more than 160 designer brands is just ten
minutes from Chur.
