GREETINGS FROM THE MAYOR
OF THE CITY WEIMAR
Dear friends and makers of the backup_festival,
Art and creativity are inseparable from Weimar,
the evidence for which is provided by the 17th
competition year, the initiators, and student helpers of the backup_festival.
A finely weaved network binds the ever-progressing creations of backup with people from
all ages, origins and lifestyle in our city. For the
five day duration of the festival, weimar will be a
cultural melting pot of inspired and harmonious
cooperation. My thanks goes to the Bauhaus University Weimar and all of it’s organizers. I wish
them success and lots of fun at the backup_festival 2015!
Yours,
Stefan Wolf
Mayor of Weimar
GREETINGS FROM THE RECTOR
OF THE BAUHAUS UNIVERSITY WEIMAR
Seven years ago the Bauhaus Film-Institute
(BFI) was founded and integrated with backup,
emphasizing the prominent position of films
in media. For a very long time, the Bauhaus
University in Weimar has successfully combined
this spectrum and art in many different ways,
what also describes this year’s festival topic is
“Network”.
The backup_festival pairs, links and connects
generations of Bachelor students and new
talents - beyond the period of the festival.
The festival has been constantly changing and
evolving but still remains an integral part of the
university and the city of Weimar.
Good Luck!
Prof. Dr.-Ing. Karl Beucke
Rector of the Bauhaus University Weimar

GREETINGS FROM THE DIRECTOR
OF THE BAUHAUS FILM-INSTITUT
First grandpa’s cinema was dead, then the prognosis for the film industry in it’s entirety was a
slow death. Then it was TV, dad’s TV is dying
anyway, or it’s already dead. All forms of mass
media are struggling. The net with it’s infinite
options has made us consumers the masters
of our own programs. We seek what we want,
when and where we want it. The net is overflowing with motion pictures and every film is
competing with every other film in the economy
of attention. A student recently told me that
festivals shouldn’t be such a big deal, that he’d
rather watch shortfilms alone on the internet.
An important reason why we’d always rather go
to festivals (or to the cinema) is that we’re not
alone there. Together with others, we share the
movie-going experience, the place, the usually
unique atmospheres that can only be found in
an international festival. We exchange and meet
new people, and make new contacts that could
elevate our careers. We meet filmmakers, give
them our feedback & critiques, listen to production stories and get to see the films we enjoyed
in a completely new light. Television and artistic
experiments don’t have to be mutually exclusive.
That is what makes a student festival so full of
life. That is Network. Backup 2015. A backup for
the grandchildren and their children after them.
Prof. Wolfgang Kissel
Director of Bauhaus Film-Institut
of the Bauhaus University in Weimar

FESTIVAL
The time has come again: from the
27th to the 31st of May 2015 we
will be welcoming artists and visitors to the international short-film
festival backup in Weimar.
Become a part of the world of
films, and the world of backup.
The short-film festival convinces
for many years by its uncomplicated and fresh direction/mood/atmosphere. Organized by students,
this festival is full of new ideas
and borderless creativity. Every
year, we do our best to entertain
you with new thematic focuses, a
new program and new artists.
A lot of films have been sent to us
and we proudly present you the
very best of them. The films are
distributed in different award pro-
E-WERK
grammes, where they will be eligible to win the respective award.
Additional films can also be seen
outside the scope of the contest,
one such programme is backup.
at.home, a special highlight which
is presented in the private atmosphere of student flats. Also part
of the exhibition is “backup.art.
screen installation and monitoring” at the Gaswerk! The backup.
connect are talks that offer you the
opportunity to have a closer look
at the artist’s works. At the end of
each day, there are the well-organized bckp-parties where you can
dance all night long to the music
of internationally famous DJs. Join
the enthusiasm and experience the
art of film in a very special way.
Welcome to the backup_festival.
Weimar’s E-Werk is a space that has grown since
1996 to be place of culture in the city. Its charm
is partly due to the raw, makeshift and flexible
industrial structures on the one hand and due
to the people who creatively use these spaces on
the other. The E-Werk premises has long since
inspired artists and viewers alike thanks to its
timeless experimental workshop atmosphere.

BAUHAUS UNIVERSITÄT
With faculties and areas of study such as Architecture and Urbanism, Civil Engineering, Art
and Design and Media, the Bauhaus-Universität
Weimar has a distinctive identity. Today the
University offers an extensive spectrum of
instruction with about 40 courses of study,
including fine art, design, web design, visual
communication, media design, media studies,
architecture, civil engineering, materials science,
processing technology and environment and
management. The term »Bauhaus« stands for
an eagerness to experiment, openness, creativity,
and a close link to industrial practice and internationality.
AWARDTEXT
The backup_festival 2015 in
Weimar looks for short films from
students and graduates of art,
media, and design schools for its
backup.award. It is the main prize
in a competition that encourages new approaches to the film
medium, sponsored by Sparkasse
Mittelthüringen. The festival aims
to support young talents, in their
accomplishment of new cinematic
perspectives.
Besides the opportunity to expand their work by offering it to
an interested public, the backup
festival also offers all those involved a chance to exchange their
ideas with other film-, designand media artists, theorists, and
producers. This is one of the great
advantages of the backup_festival.
The backup_festival also offers
other prizes such as the audio.
network.award with prizes amounting to 2000€, also with the aim
of supporting young filmmakers.
Upon arrival at the festival,
newcomers and those interested
could reflect and deepen their
skills by taking part in a combination of workshops and panel
discussions with incumbents of
the media industry.
This year and for the first time
the festival will be awarding the
backup.collaboration.award, an
audience choice award that shows
that big goals are easier to achieve
if we all work together, and how
important networking is, if you’re
working in media. The award was
created, thanks to your support, as the result of a successful
crowdfunding campaign.

CLIP.AWARDTEXT
The groundbreaking character of music videos
and music television on contemporary artwork
and aesthetics even as far as Hollywood cinema
dates back to the 1980`s. However and despite
of all discussions about its end, the backup_festival still regards the music video format as a
vital and popular field of experimentation for
the continuation of film. The clip.award offers a
forum with this idea in mind. We are looking for
music videos which create unique combinations
of music and motion picture through the employment of different media techniques. The aim is
to make pictures audible and sounds visible in a
special way.
The winning video will receive the “backup.liquid.sound.club.award”, sponsored by the “Liquid
Sound Club”.
“Liquid Sound Club” features talented artists playing contemporary electronic & ambient music
above & under water. Come to “Liquid Sound
Club” every first saturday of the month, 9pm until midnight, at the Toskana Therme Spa venues
in Bad Sulza, Bad Schandau and Bad Orb.

Weimar‘s living rooms. On the festival days,
shared flats in Weimar open their doors to
festival guests starting at 4:00 p.m. It’s not about
having an ordinary DVD evening in living
room atmosphere, but about reflecting on the
questions that are brought up by the challenges
of modern reception of film: Can films that are
produced for the big screen also work outside
the cinema? While they relax on the sofa, the
viewers decide which filmmaker will take home
the “backup.herzblut.award”, sponsored by
Partisan Vodka. Within this framework you will
discover unusual projection screens, decorations

BACKUP.ART.SCREEN
MONOTORING AND INSTALLATION
Backup.art.screen is an exhibition of artistic
works whose presentation forms and methods
leave the digital behind.
The connection between people, nature and
technology constitute the exhibition. Narratives and digital work beyond the projection
screen are combined in a spiritual net. Backup.
art.screen invites you to experience, together
with filmmakers, the seemingly chaotic digital
path and the light of monitors and projection
screens. Through the hypnotizing technical and
aesthetic trip one experiences elusive transcendental moments, and within them finds the
unseen.
SCENOGRAPHY
Lights. Lasers. Lines. Around you a room made
out of thousands of fine threads and all seem to
be connected with each other. In the corners, on
the walls, even in the midst of abeyance you can
find points, shining brighter. You can’t count
them, not even appreciate how many of these
knots are moving around you because you know
that there is neither a beginning nor an ending.
This “Network” always moves. New lights
appear, send their beams out and connect with
others. The room is dark, but together they light
it up.
They stand for you. For you and all the other
people on this world, whether they are creative
or factual, white or black, young or old. At this
festival our scenographers from a huge visual
network, connect rooms, places and also people.
With milelong cables and twine they create a
luminous world which goes hand in hand with
the festival feeling.

In the winter semester 2014 students of the Bauhaus University
Weimar have learned not only the
basics of the staged image design,
but developed their own creative
image ideas in the film studio, beyond the commercial theatrical film.
The course “Licht! Kamera! Action!

small groups to implement one of
four episodes of the film and combine these works to create a story
with individual art work.
“Drei Nächte “is an experimental,
sensual short film about a relationship between life and death,
on the border between physical
and mental existence.

BACKUP.AT.SCHOOL
The student workshop is an important part of
the festival. Two years ago backup.at.school
has been awarded as “Best Student Project” by
Verein Deutscher Ingenieure (Association of
German Engineers) in Thuringia. Under the
guidance of teacher Mario Koch students of the
9th grade from the Friedrich-Schiller-Gymnasium Weimar spent a whole project week with
student tutors.
27 girls and boys were taken between the 17th
to 25th of March out of their classrooms and
in to the Bauhaus-Universität Weimar and the
Bauhaus Film Institute. Teachers Dr. Schorcht
and Mr. Koch took over the responsibility aided
by our great backup tutors. Students that took
part in classes were: Martin Saalfrank - studio
equipment and lighting design, Carry Hoffmann, Leeda Ebrahimi - animated film, Bruno
Walz - sound design, Amr Kamel - 3D animation, and Benjamin Zeising and Arvid Neid documentation.
The project aimed to find out what was especially interesting for the students in regards to
current events in Europe and was organized
by the Landeszentrale für politische Bildung
Thüringen (Political Education Authority of
Thuringia).

BACKUP.MEETS JOCHEN KRAUSSER
Leuchkraft des Films
Documentary films by Jochen Kraußer
Sometimes important things
can be hidden in the ordinary,
everyday or mundane. Often it is
hidden from our attention. Artists
with seismographic intuitions for
substance can however bring these
things to the surface. Film artists
are light painters, who are capable
of bringing the unseeable to light.
One such artist is director Jochen Kraußer from Thuringia. He
searches the edges and finds people
who on the surface have very little
in the way of the spectacular to
offer. He develops with others in
the DEFA-Documentary Film
Studio a new method of documentary making that doesn’t take
an instructional approach to the
subject matter but rather curiously
investigates and looks through
people’s stories. With a calm and
experiment-oriented approach,
the basics of everyday life in the
GDR will be brought to light. 25
years after the peaceful revolution
his films still offer an important
view into the workings of the
GDR. Ever the movies made after
1990 show Kraußers unique and
artistic fingerprint, and his quest
for the truth. On our Thuringia
Tour many of the Highlights of his
40-years of filmmakers are bound
to show up.
Biography:
Jochen Kraußer was born on
the 7th of February 1943 in Hildburghause and stayed until 1962
125
124
when he finished high-school.
After studying to become a nurse with a specialty in Dialysis, he
started studying in the German
University for Film Arts in Potsdam-Babelsberg in 1966 and graduated in 1971. Since 1969 he was
positioned in the DEFA-Studio for
Documentary films and stayed there for 1990. After that he worked in
the DEFA-Foreigner Information,
which produced films for the GDR
Ministry of the Exterior. After an
offer from Konrad Weiß to film
south workgroups working with
the documentary studio he stayed
in the group. Starting in 1991 after
a social initiative in England, he
went on to work mostly for the second german television and ARTE.
Weimar:
Jochen Kraußer has always played
with reality and absurdity. Films
like „Leuchtkraft der Ziege“ live on
the power of independent thought
and experimenting with film
media. Kraußer also reaches across
many borders: in „Wind sei stark“
musicians from the Weimar based
„Ensemble für intuitive Musik“
work with him. He also worked
with other artists like Horst Sakulowski or the ceramicist Kristian
Körting. In the film “Der gordische
Knoten“, the last DEFA-Documentary Film ever, he portrays the
theater group „Zinnober“ from
Prenzlauer Berg and reflects on the
closeness and distance between
societal changes. In „Abschied von
Mechowoje“ he uses obscure and
forgotten images from russian life.
Embedded in the backup_fesival is
the Kraußers creative and unique
work on which so many media
students present their projects.

BACKUP.MEETS SUSANN MARIA HEMPEL
one of the highest international
awards in the world of short films.
These prizes alongside scholarships and grants, facilitate film
production.
Susann Maria Hempel was born in
Greiz (GDR), and studied Media
Design at the Bauhaus University
in Weimar from 2001 till 2009.
Susann Maria Hempel is a young
filmmaker who makes calming
and deep films with strong visuals
and a unique complexity. Her films
walk the line between animation,
puppetry, live-action, and essay
film, that exist outside the known
genres and categories. The young
filmmaker isn’t solely focused on
the short-film format, her films
are as long as they need to be to
cover the subject matter. At the
same time she is currently the
most celebrated short film maker
in Germany. Susan Maria Hempel
has received many awards during
the past year, including the most
prestigious award in the short-film
scene, the German Film Critic Prize, and most recently a Grand Prix
award at the Clermont-Ferrand,
Between 2009 and 2011 she was a
scholarship recipient of the Thüringer Kulturstiftung and received in
2012 the “cast&cut“ scholarship in
Hannover. She lives and continues
to make films in Greiz.
For the opening of the festival, backup will present “Película”, an experimental short film by the alumnus
that was made during her university days. The word means both
“skin” and “film strip”in Spanish
and brings both meanings together
in the film. “Die Fliegen (The Birds
II)“ is an experimental continuation of Hitchcock’s Film “The Bird”.
The film received the audience
choice award at the international
short film festival in Hamburg.
“The World in Stillness Clouded”
the third film shares its title with
the beginning of the third verse
of famous song “Der Mond ist
aufgegangen”. Silent people, slamming doors and a Barka in the soil
gives off the feeling of loneliness
and loss of communication. The
artist considers this film as a single
from an unsuccessful project.
“The World in Stillness Clouded”
was the recipient of the Berlinale
Film Critic Prize. In “The Big Rot”,
Susann Maria Hempel drafts a
obituary of the demolished Greizer
Theater. She documents the last
days of the building on filmstrips,
that she destroyed with chemicals.
A parallel to the destruction of the
theater on the medium on which
it was documented. “Seven times a
day we bemoan our lot and at night
we get up to avoid dreaming” was
the recipient of the Gold German
Short Film Prize, the Art Ministry’s
Film Development Prize, the Golden Knight from the youth jury of
the Dresden Filmfest, the German
film critic EMAF Media Design
Prize, the Prize for best contribution of the German competition of
the International Short Film Day
of Oberhausen, a Grand Prix in
Clermont-Ferrand and many other
awards. The film tells the story of
mutilation and abuse with elements
of a monstrous puppet theater .
The Film talk will be hosted by
author, film historian, journalist,
and cinema program designer
Dr. Claus Löser.

videomapping & facade projection
festival
Genius Loci Weimar is a festival for site-specific
audio-visual art and interactive facade projections. The concept of the festival is to embrace
the spirit of the location. This means the reinterpretation of the architecture, history and other
visible and invisible layers of meaning of buildings, the urban situation and the subsequent
visualization of these ideas using the techniques
of video mapping.

open with Wooden Peak. The opening concert
will be held at the traditional backup location
- Lichthaus Kino in the E-Werk yard.
The highlight of these events will be bckp_2015

WOODEN PEAK
WOODEN PEAK is a two-man orchestra that
constantly explores its own limits. For this
ambitious program they will also include live
concerts as a duo. Sebastian Rode and Jonas
Wolter are capable of creating this kind of music
effortlessly - guitar, drums and voice brought
to life from electronic music. In January 2015
Wooden Peak joined a tour with a five-piece
ensemble for the first time where they created
new arrangements to existing songs.

Anthony Gboy – G’boï
Metaboman
G’boï comes from the French city Lyon and
is one of the co-founders of ‘Denise Records’.
G’boï is a cunning collector, who is always in
search of old and forgotten pieces of Underground House Music. In true scourge of the linearity, his unique and dynamic sets are crossed
by numerous influence, like his interbreeding.
First there was Hip Hop and Metaboman wanted to rap. He was able to do that at Feindrehstar, where he was one of the founding members.
From iterally everywhere house music came on
to him by itself and he followed it with his MPC
under his arm. Through his sound he develops
a snotty and unconventional beauty. The groove
and bass are deep, which make his tracks sound
crunchy and elastic. For him this is the music.
Music made for head and limbs.
137
136
Emeric Leprince – Merick
Vivian Koch (Polynom Berlin)
Merick, born in Lyon, is a french producer and
composer, who lives in Paris and Berlin. His
music is meant to be an invitation to a journey.
His compositions are a mixture of different
styles of music; they are breezy, sometimes melancholic, but also for dancers, a mix between
African percussion and modern techno music.
This will be the second time Merick puts on
some music at the backup_festival.
Born and raised in Thuringia, Vivian has always
wanted to follow her musical passion. Since she
was always interested in electronic music, she
started by creating a record collection. Today
her sets vary between impulsive, dubby techno
sounds and house with a touching rhythm. Vivan Koch is part of the Label Polynom Berlin.

Nu-Jazz-Sets in nightbars such as
Planbar and C-Keller.
Mister Sog Colone-Weimar
Sog is a good friend with a mixing
console since 1994 and with its help
tries to live out his musical versatility. It was never his intention to
be a classic techno or house DJ. He
says “There’ s simply too much other
cool music out there that has to be
