Every year, the world’s oldest festival
of Baroque music draws some 20,000
visitors to Göttingen and southern
Lower Saxony.
In 2013, the event focuses on George
Frideric Handel and the fascination

This gala concert is entirely inspired by the
Orient: Sandrine Piau sings arias from Giulio
Cesare and Alexander Balus, and with
Johann Joseph Fux’s Turcaria, the FestspielOrchester Göttingen evokes the turmoil of
battle of the Turkish Siege of Vienna in 1683,
while the Ensemble NAYA creates a musical
bridge between Orient and Occident.

The Mädchenchor Hannover (Hannover
girls’ choir) and the Arte Ensemble spotlight
works by Italian composers and their influence on J.S. Bach in this evening programme.
The world-renowned choir, led by Gudrun
Schröfel, has won numerous awards. The
Arte Ensemble is made up of soloists of the
NDR Radiophilharmonie. They perform in
various ensembles, ranging from quintets to
nonets.

and director of the Ruhr Triennale, staged the
moving musical theatre production in 2012
with 39 young singers from the Carmina Slovenica. Tales and themes from the end of childhood are combined into a musical sequence

from the Tito era all the way to pop music.

The centrepiece of the “In an Ocean of Harmony” programme is the encounter between
the author and poet Bettina von Arnim
(1785 – 1859) and the “titan” Ludwig van
Beethoven (1770 – 1827) in Vienna in 1810.
In a medley of word and music, Sebastian
Knauer will perform Beethoven’s three most
famous piano sonatas, punctuated by readings by Gudrun Landgrebe.

The “Morgenland Festival Osnabrück”
(Orient Festival Osnabrück) is
considered to be one of the most
important Near and Middle Eastern
cultural festivals. This is where the
Tehran Symphony Orchestra gave its
first European guest performance,
while the Osnabrück Symphony
Orchestra was the first European
orchestra to travel to the Islamic
Republic of Iran. Further milestones
include guest performances in
Damascus, Amman and Izmir, along
with European premieres of Iranian
and Uighur rock bands.
