Reinhart von Gutzeit Rektor EDITORIAL Many European cities describe themselves as a “city of music”; none has more justification to do so than Salzburg. The Mozarteum University plays a major role in contributing to the world renown of this unique Baroque city. The Mozarteum has an enormous obligation to the composer from whom it takes its name. The work of the university concentrates on conveying the competence acquired over many generations in the interpretation of Mozart’s inconceivably rich œuvre. This occurs in artistic practice, teaching and research – areas constantly undergoing further development. However, besides the charismatic attraction of the name Wolfgang Amadé Mozart and of musical life in Salzburg, it should not be forgotten that other arts also play an important role in the city and its university. In addition to fostering tradition, work at the Mozarteum University focuses on analysing contemporary cultural activities. We are grateful that after a long and difficult period the new main university building has been completed and opened in the Mozart anniversary year 2006. Most departments of the Mozarteum University are now located on or near the Mirabellplatz. Lecturers and students will again be able to communicate easily with each other; for the citizens of Salzburg and visitors to the city the Mozarteum will again become a visible and accessible centre of the arts. Our university offers students the best conditions for unfolding their artistic talents, for absorbing the spirit of Mozart and for using their period of study at the Mozarteum to generate decisive momentum in promoting their artistic development. Reinhart von Gutzeit Chancellor of the Mozarteum University 5 Mozarts Musik ist so rein und schön, Mozart’s music is so pure and beautiful that I regard dass ich sie als die innere Schönheit it as the inner beauty of the universe itself. des Universums selbst ansehe. CONDUCTING, COMPOSITION AND MUSIC THEORY The conducting course for directing orchestras and choruses requires distinguished personalities and characteristics as well as outstanding musical abilities such as rhythmic talent, evolving an idea of musical sound, and a trained ear. The course comprises the study of orchestral and stage literature as well as a capella repertoire and instrumentally accompanied choral works from all epochs of music history. Works are analysed musically, stylistically and with regard to baton technique. In commemoration of Mozart, from whom the Mozarteum University takes its name, a central task is to foster a free creative spirit, something which is particularly true of the course in composition. Intensive coaching in harmonic theory, counterpoint and musical form creates the basis for exploring styles and techniques of various musical epochs until the present. Special emphasis is given to composing with electronic sound synthesisers and sound processing techniques, as well as electronic compositional processes. By founding the electronic studio in 1958 the Mozarteum University adopted a pioneering role in Austria in the field of computer music and creative work with new media. KEYBOARD INSTRUMENTS Piano | organ | harpsichord The Mozarteum University claims to provide excellent instrumental training and this is guaranteed by internationally successful artists with great experience in teaching. Perfecting solo playing, analysing the particular demands of chamber music and preparing students to become highly qualified orchestral players are aims that are given equal importance and which complement each other. In the many instrumental classes the interpretation of Mozart’s music is given particular importance within a broad spectrum from the Renaissance to the present. By means of cooperation with composers who teach or study at the Mozarteum, students have the chance to experience a direct reference to current musical creativity. Only pianists, organists or harpsichord players who meet the highest requirements as regards the technical command of their instrument and in the thorough intellectual analysis of musical works can succeed on international concert stages. Of highest priority in teaching the instrument is to give graduates the ability to face competition. Furthermore, depending on the demands of the market, the curriculum offers students the possibility of gaining a qualification for other spheres of piano playing such as chamber music, the interpretation of lieder, as a répétiteur, playing the fortepiano or as a piano teacher. ■ ■ ■ ■ ■ ■ ■ ELLEN BRASLAVSKY ■ JOHANN BRÜDERL ■ MARCO DIAZ-TAMAYO ■ ELIOT FISK ■ SIMONE FONTANELLI ■ ANNELIESE-CLARA GAHL ■ DANKWART GAHL ■ RICARDO GALLEN GARCIA ■ JÜRGEN GEISE SUSANNE GRUBER ■ GERDA GUTTENBERG ■ WOLFGANG GUTTMANN ■ WALTER HABERL ■ CLEMENS HAGEN ■ LUKAS HAGEN ■ VERONIKA HAGEN-DI RONZA ■ HARALD HERZL ■ CHRISTINE HOOCK JÜRGEN HÜBSCHER ■ CHRISTOS KANETTIS ■ MARI KATO ■ HERMANN KIENZL ■ SUN-OK KIM ■ WONJI KIM ■ IRMA KLIAUZAITE ■ HIROTSUGU KUROSAKI ■ TÜNDE KURUCZ ■ PETER LANGGARTNER ADELHEID LITSCHAUER ■ DANA MICICOI ■ ANITA MITTERER ■ GESINE MÜCKE-ELSCHEK ■ MARTIN MUMELTER ■ WERNER NEUGEBAUER ■ CARSTEN NEUMANN ■ SARAH O’BRIEN ■ IGOR OZIM KLARA ELISABETH PANTILLON ■ HOWARD PENNY ■ JOHANNA PICKER ■ MARCUS POUGET ■ ALEXANDRU PREDA ■ SUSANNA RIEBL ■ THOMAS RIEBL ■ PAUL ROCZEK ■ PHILIP SAUDEK ■ BENJAMIN SCHMID BRIGITTE SCHMID ■ RAINER SCHMIDT ■ MATTHIAS SEIDEL ■ NORIKO SHIOZAKI ■ LAVARD SKOU-LARSEN ■ EVA STEINSCHADEN-VAVTAR ■ SEBASTIAN STENZEL ■ WILFRIED TACHEZI ■ MARKUS TOMASI MICHAEL TOMASI ■ BILIANA TZINLIKOVA ■ WOLFRAM WINCOR ■ ROBERT WOLFF ■ HELMUT ZEHETMAIR ■ ■ ■ ■ HANSJÖRG ANGERER ■ ULRICH BIERSACK ■ FLORIAN BIRSAK ■ DANIEL BONVIN ■ ALOIS BRANDHOFER ■ MARIA DERSCHMIDT ■ NICOLA FRISARDI ■ HANS GANSCH ■ MARIANNE GEISE ■ IRENA GRAFENAUER-RUPPEL MARTIN GRUBINGER ■ ARNO HASELSTEINER ■ MARI HONDA ■ YOSHINORI HONDA-TOMINAGA ■ MANFRED HOPPERT ■ MICHAEL MARTIN KOFLER ■ BERNHARD KRABATSCH ■ GOTTFRIED MENTH ■ FLORIAN MÜLLER DOROTHEE OBERLINGER ■ ALBERT OSTERHAMMER ■ ANDREAS ÖTTL ■ GÜNTHER PASSIN ■ JAN PIPREK ■ BEATRICE RENTSCH ■ ELKE RIEDER ■ EMIL RIEDER ■ NADEJDA RUBANENKO ■ PETER SADLO ■ ELKE SALLER NORBERT SALVENMOSER ■ KLAUS SCHELLANDER ■ STEFAN SCHILLI ■ WILHELM SCHWAIGER ■ NORIKO TAKAMORI ■ JANNE THOMSEN ■ RADOVAN VLATKOVIC ■ MALGORZATA WILLIM-BURNECKI ■ SEIKO YAMADA STREICH- UND ZUPFINSTRUMENTE BLASINSTRUMENTE UND SCHLAGINSTRUMENTE STRING AND PLUCKED STRING INSTRUMENTS WIND INSTRUMENTS AND PERCUSSION Violine | Viola | Violoncello | Kontrabass | Gitarre | Harfe Flöte | Blockflöte | Oboe | Klarinette | Fagott | Horn | Trompete | Posaune | Basstuba | Schlaginstrumente Violin | viola | cello | double-bass | guitar | harp Flute | recorder | oboe | clarinet | bassoon | horn | trumpet | trombone | bass tuba | percussion Die Violinkonzerte Mozarts werden weltweit als untrüglicher Prüfstein bei jedem Orchesterprobespiel angesehen. When auditions are held for orchestral positions throughout the world, Mozart’s Violin Concertos are regarded as a sure touchstone. Even though many works by other composers require a higher degree of virtuosity, the way in which string players perform is particularly revealing as regards a cultivated style. It is not surprising that in an institution that is preoccupied more than any other in the world with Mozart, a special style of string playing has evolved and is passed on. The training of wind players and percussionists at the Mozarteum University focuses in particular on the analysis of Mozart’s works and also on contemporary music. Besides instruction in solo playing, chamber music and orchestral playing, students have the opportunity to gain a wide variety of experience in ensemble playing and become acquainted with unusual repertoire. This has been made possible by creating the Salzburg Bläserphilharmonie of the Mozarteum University, a large-scale ensemble, all of whose players have reached an excellent standard. 12 Die einzige Musik, die im The only music that would not sound out Mund Gottes nicht deplaziert of place in the mouth of God is that by Mozart. klingen würde, ist die von Mozart. From the time when the Mozarteum was founded in 1841, singing lessons always played an important role and that has remained so until today. However, professional demands have changed for singers and the courses are designed so as to give graduates all-round preparation for the varied realities of life in the music business. Students who choose music-theatre as a main subject are trained to perform on stage. Performances accompanied by piano and orchestra provide experience in repertoire ranging from Monteverdi to the present. The Mozart Opera Institute is devoted to an intensive study of the performance practice of the 18th century and contrasts it with presentday styles of interpretation. 14 Mozart war das göttliche Genie, Mozart was the divine genius who could express das die tiefsten Gedanken mit den the deepest thoughts with the fewest words. wenigsten Worten ausdrücken konnte. The course is structured in such a way as to train actors and actresses as well as stage directors to be in complete command of their talents and exploit them fully in order to meet the varied requirements of local professional theatres and the free drama scene. Students learn the importance of being flexible and reacting independently to various working contexts and aesthetic concepts. Every effort is made to encourage the individual personalities and disposition of the students. Texts are analysed with constant regard to the fundamental elements of acting and playing: the space, the body and movement. Interdisciplinary approaches as well as film, radio and television thereby play an important role. Intensive analysis of questions of our time in enthusiastic dialogue forms the core of interaction between students and lecturers. Interdisciplinary training in the fields of literature, theatre, music, the history of art and civilisation, architecture, film and photography form the basis of the artistic and technical analysis of the scene, the body and the object in the space. Students learn how to represent the concept they elaborate in painting, graphic and model form. The newest technical media are applied: CAD, photography and video (drawings of functional plans and lighting concepts; drawings for the ateliers, costumes, tailoring plans, accessories and props as well as cost calculation for materials). Students acquire practical experience in interdisciplinary projects as well as in cooperation with the Salzburg Landestheater, the Salzburg Festival and the museums in Salzburg. 16 Je näher man an Mozart The nearer one would like to approach Mozart, ■ ■ ■ ■ ■ ■ ■ herankommen möchte, the greater the distance from where he looks back. um so ferner blickt er zurück. MUSICOLOGY Teaching in musicology for students on all musical courses deals primarily with European music history from the Middle Ages to the New Age. Particular emphasis is given to European folk music, non-European music and church music as well as cultural and academic issues on music. In many interdisciplinary projects as well as with cooperation partners in Austria and abroad a variety of subjects are studied: questions concerning music reception, treatises on composers; forms of cultural perception (the comparison of European and American music) and much more. In research the tasks are broad-ranging, focusing on the music history of the 18th to the 20th century: analytical aspects of the history of music reception, cultural and sociological issues as well as questions of aesthetics, philology, baroque music, the Viennese classical school and New Music in the 20th century, pop music. Emphasis is also given to research on folk music in the Alpine region and questions about music as a cultural phenomenon; special importance is attached to the work undertaken by the Institute of the History of Musical Reception and Interpretation. Several series of books are regularly prepared and published: Varia Musicologica (Peter Lang publishing house, Berne, Switzerland), Salzburg Contributions to Musicology (Peter Lang publishing house, Berne, Switzerland), Essays from various universities on Music Education and Musicology (Peter Lang publishing house, Berne, Switzerland) as well as the Handbook of Musical Genres (Laaber publishing house, Germany). 20 MUSIC EDUCATIONAL THEORY MUSIC AND DANCE EDUCATIONAL THEORY In the courses on music education as well as for teaching an instrument or singing, equal importance is attached to the art of mastering an instrument or the voice as to the art of teaching how to acquire these abilities. There is a balanced relationship on the course between artistic and music educational work in theory and practice. To complement the music educational training in Salzburg, the Mozarteum University has an external department in Innsbruck. In a contractual agreement guaranteeing the cooperation, the Mozarteum University allows students of the regional conservatories in Tyrol and Vorarlberg access to the European educational system according to the idea of the Bologna process. The project “Music educational research in Austria” creates networks and a systematic programme for music educational research in Austria. The composer and educationalist Carl Orff founded the Orff Institute in 1961 as the nucleus of elementary music and dance education at the Mozarteum University. The Orff School regards the relationship between music, language and dance as the basis of musical socialisation and development of the personality. The Orff Institute is devoted to training teachers to convey elementary music and dance/movement education at schools and freelance at all levels of training. The Institute is committed in particular to the academic as well as the artistic and practical development of music and dance education and sees its duty in keeping alive the tradition of the Orff School, documenting its progress and promoting its further evolvement. The Mozarteum University Symphony Orchestra plays an important role in the history and present of the Mozarteum University. Dennis Russell Davies has been principal conductor of the orchestra since 1999. Students acquire stage experience by working in the orchestra and learn important works from the symphonic repertoire, thereby receiving essential stimuli for their artistic development. Dennis Russell Davies continues the tradition started by Michael Gielen in that he studies not only the classical repertoire with the students but also pays particular attention to 20th century works. Wind music at the highest level – that is synonymous with the Bläserphilharmonie Mozarteum Salzburg, which was founded in 2002. Principal conductor Hansjörg Angerer evolves the typical characteristics of the ensemble through imaginative programme planning and specific sound aesthetics. The Bläserphilharmonie plays in ensembles of differing sizes, whereby the repertoire comprises compositions from four centuries in original versions or new arrangements. The Bläserphilharmonie Mozarteum Salzburg has already recorded several CDs. 26 25 Mozart ist in der Musik In music Mozart is one of the most eines der schwersten Kapitel: difficult chapters because he is perfection. weil er die Vollendung ist. HIGHLY TALENTED STUDENTS HISTORY OF THE RECEPTION OF MUSIC NEW MUSIC EARLY MUSIC The Institute for Encouraging Highly Talented Students creates favourable conditions for a continuous musical, artistic and personal development of highly talented children and young persons. The programmatic concept is based on the results of research into musical talent and is constantly subject to scientific monitoring. The aim of the Institute of the History of Musical Reception and Interpretation is to link research activities with tasks in the field of scientific and artistic teaching. Within the context of a broad-ranging musicological approach the work of the institute focuses primarily on organising lectures, symposia and studies of the varied forms of analysis of Wolfgang Amadé Mozart’s musical œuvre. The Institute of New Music offers students and lecturers the opportunity to challenge and encourage each other in a variety of activities: performers learn how to deal in theory and in practice with music from the modern classical period to the present; composers rehearse and develop their works in direct contact with the performers; dialogue is promoted between science and art. The institute presents its projects to the public and participates in competitions, exchange programmes and other activities to promote international discourse. So-called "early music” has gained increasing importance in concert life of recent decades. The Institute of Early Music brings together the varying range of competence in the spheres of early music and its performance practice by merging different specialist subjects. The aim is for students to gain a qualification which takes account of their inclinations as well as their professional perspectives. The institute coordinates and organises relevant teaching classes, courses, lectures and project work. THE INTERPRETATION OF MOZART OPERAS GAME RESEARCH The Institute of Mozart Operas conveys historical performance practice both musically and scenically – contrasted by present day approaches and performance styles. Musicological seminars and introductions to historic dances and customs from Mozart’s time form the basis for performances of Mozart operas in interdisciplinary cooperation projects. The Institute for Research into Games was founded in 1990 and is devoted to the entire cultural and historical range of games and the investigation of educational intensity. The tasks of the institute include maintaining a research library, editing the book series Kulturgeschichte des Spiels in Bildern und Dokumenten as well as organising exhibitions. 31 Ich habe Mozart für heiter gehalten I thought Mozart was cheerful – Wie tief muss ich how deeply melancholic I must be! melancholisch sein!
