Thermal insulation properties of Bulgarian bricks
Stefan Stefanov Thermal insulation properties of Bulgarian bricks For external walls in heated social and industrial buildings, the Bulgarian building standard requires a U-value of < 0.5 W/m2K. These values cannot be achieved with the 3.85 NF and 4.5 NF horizontal coring bricks which are mainly used in Bulgaria at present. It is necessary to develop and produce large-sized vertical coring bricks for 30 cm and 36 cm thick walls with a low thermal conductivity coefficient. Introduction For thousands of years bricks have been used as a building material and they still convince today due to their outstanding properties, such as: n Excellent thermal insulation n Temperature fluctuations are balanced by the absorption or release of heat n Very low equilibrium moisture n High fire resistance classification n Good compressive strength n Positive characteristics in regard to wind tightness, sound insulation or moisture protection A very important property of a brick wall is thermal protection. The thermal insulation properties are characterized by the following factors: n Coefficient of thermal conductivity = W/mK n Coefficient of thermal transition U = W/m2K n Thermal transmission resistance R = 1/k = m2K/W [1, 2] The correlations between thermal conductivity and density, shrinkage, water absorption and abrasion volume have been examined in detail, for example in [3]. In simplified terms it can be stated that the lower the density and the greater the porosity, the lower is the thermal conductivity and the better are the thermal insulation properties of the brick. Thermal insulation properties of Bulgarian bricks The method for the direct determination of the thermal conductivity is explained in DIN 52611, DIN 52612 and the Bulgarian standard BSD-16632-87. Eine 23 cm dicke Wand aus die- 11.05 10.44 16.50 0.381 0.364 0.390 and ceramic blocks can be divided into the following products [6]: n High thermal insulation properties: < 800 kg/m3 and = 0.25 to 0.39 W/mK n Medium thermal insulation properties: = 800 to 1000 kg/m3 and = 0.39 to 0.45 W/mK n Low thermal insulation properties: > 1000 kg/m3 and = > 0.45 W/mK Mainly 3.85 NF (250 mm x 250 mm x 120 mm) and 4.5 NF (250 mm x 250 mm x 140 mm) ceramic blocks (horizontal coring bricks) are manufactured in Bulgaria. The weight is 7.5 to 9 kg and the density lies above 1 000 kg/m3. These products have low thermal insulation properties. Table 1 shows the density, weight and thermal conductivity coefficient () of selected bricks used currently in Bulgaria and also the coefficient of thermal transition U of walls built with these bricks. The Bulgarian building standard for external walls requires a U-value < 0.5 W/m2K, which is prescribed for the planning and construction of heated buildings [7] for social, industrial and residential use. The 3.85 NF and 4.5 NF ceramic perforated bricks used mainly in Bulgaria do not fulfil these requirements at present. In Western Europe significantly lower U-values are called for in many cases and also achieved with the bricks used there (U < 0.3 W/m2K). The average thermal conductivity coefficient of the Bulgarian horizontal coring bricks lies in the region of = 0.35 to 0.45 W/mK. The external walls of Bulgarian residential buildings are at present 25 cm thick, built of horizontal coring bricks with or without additional insulation of polystyrene, polyurethane, mineral wool or similar. For the 25 cm wall, a thermal insulation layer of 6 cm mineral wool or 5 cm foamed polystyrene is necessary to attain U < 0.5 W/m2K. The use of single-leaf walls is more effective. In order to achieve the ZI 3/2004 39 required U-values < 0.5 W/m2K with the bricks, the walls must be made thicker or provided with additional thermal insulation. Also of interest are ceramic wall elements with an integrated thermal insulating layer throughout. In Bulgaria “Polynor” elements are offered, consisting of two ceramic blocks, each 90 mm thick and stuck together with a 50 mm polyurethane layer. A 23 cm thick wall built using such elements has a Uvalue of 0.476 W/m2K and corresponds to the building standard. However it is too expensive, the organic layer is combustible and ages with time, so that the thermal insulating properties deteriorate. 40 ZI 3/2004 The thermal insulation of the bricks can be improved by the following factors: n Increase of the perforation fraction of the brick n Increased porosity of the ceramic body, i.e. lowering of the ceramic body density n Extension of the path of heat flow in the brick by smaller perforations and thinner webs [4, 5] n Increase of the wall thickness by using large-sized bricks n Use of vertical coring bricks with tongue and groove, which are laid without mortar in the vertical joints n Use of lightweight mortars with improved thermal insulation due to porous aggregates, or plane-ground vertical coring bricks with thin bed mortar The thermal insulation properties of the bricks also depend on the raw materials and the process engineering and are influenced among other things by the chemical and mineralogical composition, duration of firing and holding time as well as the firing temperature. At the NISI (Scientific Research Institute of Construction) in Sofia the U-value of a 30 cm thick wall was determined experimentally according to DIN 52611 and ISO-DIS 98892.P [8]. This wall of non-porous 9.6 NF vertical coring bricks (300 mm x 250 mm x 250 mm) with 42% perforation share has a Uvalue of 0.835 W/m2K. The result shows that the required Uvalue cannot be achieved with non-porous vertical coring bricks, even with an increased perforation share and optimization of the type of perforation. It is urgently necessary to develop and manufacture new ceramic blocks for 30 cm and 36 cm thick walls with a low thermal conductivity coefficient (large-sized vertical coring bricks with low density, increased porosity and perforation share). Simple single-leaf walls of high quality can be built quickly and inexpensively with such bricks. The production of these ceramic blocks with improved thermal insulation properties requires certain changes in the technology. The coal dusts used at present as combustible additives in the Bulgarian brick industry need to be replaced by other pore-forming materials. The coals and coal dusts reduce the mechanical strength and the ash increases the mass of the bricks and worsens the thermal insulation. Vertical coring bricks are most suitable. Lightweight bricks are produced abroad with pore-forming additives: Sawdust – “Unipor” [9], EPS expanded polystyrene or recycled Styropor – “Poroton” [9], perlite – “Perlater” [10], “Porotherm” [11], “Klimaton”, etc. The porosity of the bricks is achieved by the combustible additives which leave behind micro-pores in the clay body after firing. Perlite, vermiculite, diatomite, fly ash, etc. are used as inorganic, non-combustible pore-forming materials. These mortars contain thermal insulation materials, are lighter and provide thermal insulation that is three times higher than the usual mortar. Alternatively, ceramic blocks can be plane-ground in order to be able to lay the horizontal joints with a thinner layer of mortar (thin bed mortar). In many countries large-sized vertical coring bricks with porous clay bodies are used successfully for 30 and 36 cm thick walls. In Bulgaria it is necessary to replace the currently used horizontal coring bricks by such products. For Bulgarian conditions, the following composition is particularly suitable for thermal insulating ceramic blocks: Clay = 68%, fly ash = 10%, sawdust = 20%, expanded polystyrene = 2%. The use of bricks with improved thermal insulation properties saves energy, is of great ecological importance and is a good investment for the future. Literature See German text.
