Programme
St. Andgas lend the traditional Christmas songs the dignity they have been refused for centuries. some
of the melodies are easily recognized, while others have been turned into different but equally well-suited
sequences. The beats and tempo of all Christmas songs have been adapted to the new, very expressive
style. To emphasise nastiness, the St. Andgas riff-raff have written some of the lyrics themselves.
The programme is adapted to the promotors’ time constraints, thus the setlist’s length and order might
change.

The Three Kings in personal union open with a short, rhythmic round
dance. Moving over to a stamp rock beat the ground is made for
the entrance of the beards, loudly and proudly exulting a well-known
guitar riff. The verse ends in:

Extremely harmonic intro with recorder and bass guitar. A warm
atmosphere comes up when Chris The Saviour finally whispers the
first verse into the microphone. In case you did not come for peaceful ’
ting-a-ling just wait for the second verse: Roaring electric guitars, a
tight rock beat from the rhythm section, and Chris The Saviour back
in shouting mode. Not really a “hush o’er the land” any more; a quake
in progress!

Some latin groove in the air, Joseph blows into the Saxophone and
finally everybody shouts: “Glüh-hüwein”. Glühwein (Mutted Wine) is
an awful hot drink some people love to drink on Christmas markets.
It is most often made from cheap wine, sugar, spices and other things
that can cause you a terrible headache. In case you miss to sing along
the one and only word of text at the end of it: You can do better next
time. That song will be repeated as often as the guys need it.

Chris The Saviour sings this traditional Christmas lyrics with a lovely
Dutch accent. To align the mood of lyrics and music, the silly melody
got replaced by Rory, the definite guitar saint from Ireland. This was
due to “froh und munter” meaning cheerful and happy, and that works
fast and loud only.

Christmas trees, decoration and illumination come with an potential for
conflicts that is at least equal to that of love affairs or alcoholism. This
solo performed by Ohwie raises awareness for what we are all longing
for.

It depends on the day’s form whether the ending of the word Weihnachtsmann is pronounced German or English (“Weihnachts-Man”).
The latter goes well with the rest of the lyrics, which is almost completely taken from the BAP’s “Müsli-Man”. But don’t think that St.
Andgas has simply replaced “Müsliman” by “Weihnachtsman”. The
very last word in the song makes the real difference. Tip: They did
not, like BAP, make the punk rhyme on krank. Come and hear!

the lyrics have been slightly modified. The St. Andgas version moves
the scene to the horse butcher’s and goes about preparing a creative
Christmas goulash with kidneys, heart, brain, gin, and - as it is Christmas time - cinnamon.

Virgin Mary did not kill a Sheriff, not even a mayor. She has not
been accused, and actually nobody wants to know what she is talking.
Her confession is a presumption: Ich gebar das Christkind, doch ich
schwör’ ich bin noch Jungfrau. That is to say: I gave birth to the
holy child, but I swear I’m still a virgin. The phrase to sing along - or
rather shout along - is: Still, still, still, weil’s Kindlein schlafen will!
Its meaning: Hush, hush, hush, for the little child wants to sleep.

John Lennon had turned a song from the 18th century (Stewball ) into
his most famous Christmas song to promote peace. The aspiration of
the St. Andgas version is lower but equally important: It describes
the typical disaster that thousands of families go through on every
Christmas and that makes them feeling bad. With a good sense of
humor St. Andgas lowers expectations and thus prepares for a really
nice Christmas. As a tribute to John Lennon’s creativity the Livestock
in the Barn of St. Andgas plays an unpredictable solo. Big fun for the
audience, but the rest of the band has to cope with it.

A long, dark introduction expressing a silent, but horrible night. While
in the background a painfully slow guitar theme whines along, voices
grown: “Stille Nacht”. But lo and behold! Like an acoustic lightning
the Paranoid guitar riff takes away the pain. The hell of “Diabolus in
musica” had its 32 bars. Now we are in G major. ’G’ like in “good” or
“godly”. ’G’ like in “Glory”. And to this exulting hardrock the now so
free voices sing the highlight of every (German) Christmas mass:

only now, the St. Andgas folks have broached the issue of depression
in its extreme variant: The sad subsistence of Shopping Mall Santa
Clauses. The text of this song was written at a very unusual time
of the day with the author being in a disastrous mental and physical
condition. The result is a pearl of song lyrics.

Once upon a time, when people had sparkling eyes and glittering eyes,

Great atmosphere in the log hut in Bethlehem: Quicker than expected
the baby is in the crib and everybody comes to see: Shepherds, farmers,
even kings. As known from song number 8 The Three Kings are already
a bit dizzy from smoking incense, the shepherds bring along some beer,
and the party is on.

In the living room of an actually nice family the nativity scene was
always disturbed by a weird character: We all know that an ox and a
donkey are part of the Christmas crib, that some shepherds may come
in, and that The Three Kings finally join the club. But a dog? This
was not a sheepdog, but a terribly over-scaled monster put into the
hut by somebody, close to the crib. One member of the family hated
that mutt and this song is his revenge: It tells the story of this dog
from the perspective of Jesus.

This is what nobody expected: One day the Christ Child is indeed in
front of our door - and is completely tanked up, yes, rat-arsed. This is
due to a mistake when planning its trip: It just arrived on the wrong
day in the wrong town. A lovely, short story with nasty details.

An almighty piece of bourgeois Christmas arts in five acts.
1. Prelude in F major:
Flute solo for two recorders, played by Virgin Mary in the world
unique bi-nostril technique.
2. Interlude in B major:
Scary guitar riff, taken over by a gigantic Tutti in Presto con
brio.
3. Main part in B major:
This is the well-known Christmas song Ihr Kinderlein kommet,
i.e. has its lyrics and its melody. It is just that the interpretation
(tempo, dynamic) is a bit different. A lot different.
4. Exzessivum modulato:
Guitar and saxophone soli for the hearing impaired with several
life-threatening key modulations.
5. Finale: Ad libitum with aspiration depending on the day’s form.

It’s a common misery: The dinner has been too long and chairs have
been too uncomfortable. Why not go out into the winter wonderland
to do some walking with ski sticks? In St. Andgas the ski sticks end
up in the fireplace and, because it rhymes on kalt (cold), it ends up
with an Alt (beer) in a bar.

Lead vocals with one ukulele and three backing vocals. In the live version some interesting, spontaneous elements are added to the choir arrangement that can heal the harmony (reduced polyphony or unisono)
or destroy (dissonance, cluster). None of the two is done willingly.
Nothing has been put on paper and by design the song depends on the
day’s form.

to its original characteristic. Yah, man.

Deep Purple melody are well known. What was not known before
St. Andgas is how well the two fit together. Listen and sing along!

St. Andgas (Blues’n Roll)
When the lyrics of Tochter Zion were authored (18th or 19th century)
the melody (by Georg Friedrich Händel in 1747) was already an oldie.
Händel’s melody is a highlight of sacred music. Despite of that experts
assume that, if Bonnie Rice had been born a bit earlier, his melody
would have been taken for Tochter Zion. And as the original lyrics
did not have a chorus yet, a two liner was added for the St. Andgas
version:
Alles was Du willst ist kommen, Tochter Zion
[Und jetzt der Engel Chor:] Freu! Zion, freu!

St. Andgas (Bass Vocals Blues)
The refrain is an homage to Loriot (*12.11.1923, †22.08.2011). Nobody has ever inspired the St. Andgas authors more than he did. It
goes well with Loriot’s sense of humor that the song dedicated to him
deals with snivelling childhood memories, complaints about the modern world and a scene of suicide by a burning Christmas tree. Such
moaning fits well into a melancholic Tom Waits melody, hummed to
some surrounding elevator jazz. In analogy to what Loriot said about
crime-fiction authors:
In St. Andgas the evil is in good hands.

St. Andgas says “Thank You”
Many thanks to all who help making the concerts a success: Thank you for heating the rehearsal room
(phew!), for booking us, for the great sound, for the drinks and for the ash trays. And most of all we
