Das Kunstwerk Soffio di foglie (Atemhauch der Blätter) zeigt sechs dünne Bäume in
ihrer natürlichen Wachstumsentwicklung. Aufrecht nebeneinander stehend durchdringen
diese ein plastisches Volumen aus Bronze. Doch wie entstand dieses in der Mitte eine
grosse Mulde bildende Bronzestück, welches dem Betrachter auf Kopfhöhe begegnet?
Es ist der Atem des Künstlers, den dieser in einen Haufen abgefallener Blätter blies: «(...)
dabei ging es (...) um das Sichtbarmachen von Volumen und Gewicht. Durch das Atmen
in die Blätter sind die Blätter zur Seite geblasen worden. So bekam ich eine analoge
Form meines Atems.» Den Akt in Bronze gegossen, zeichnet der schwere metallische
Werkstoff das unsichtbare Volumen des Atemhauchs plastisch nach und macht auf diese
Weise die kraftvolle Lebensenergie des Künstlers erfahrbar. Eine Energie, die in das Innere
unseres Körpers aufgenommen wird, diesen durchflutet, ausfüllt, am Leben erhält und
schliesslich wieder ausgestossen wird – ein unsichtbarer Prozess, ein steter Austausch
mit der Welt. Giuseppe Penone, der als Vertreter der Arte Povera gilt, beschreibt in seinen
Prosastücken zur Werkreihe Soffio die Relevanz des Atems auf folgende Weise: «Atem
ist die automatische, unwillkürliche Skulptur, die uns der Osmose mit den Dingen am
nächsten bringt. Es ist der Vorgang, der die Hülle, die Identität der Haut, aufhebt.»
Durch den Titel Soffio di foglie, mit dem der Künstler die menschliche Atmung mit der
pflanzlichen in Verbindung setzt, hebt Penone die wechselseitige Beziehung zwischen
Mensch und Natur, die sich z. B. auch im griechischen Wort pneuma – Hauch, Wind,
aber auch Geist – wiederfindet, auf poetische Weise hervor. Zudem lässt sich in Soffio
di foglie die Bedeutung der Energie in Natur und Kultur entdecken. Auf skulpturale Weise
verwebt Penone die natürliche Energie, die in Wachstumsprozessen oder im Atem zu
finden ist, mit der geistigen Energie, die Voraussetzung aller kulturellen Aktivität ist.
Letztere kommt etwa in der Herstellung und Verarbeitung von Bronze als kulturell erlernte
Tätigkeit oder im kreativen Akt der Erschaffung eines Kunstwerkes selbst zum Ausdruck.

The artwork Soffio di foglie (Breath of Leaves) presents six thin trees in their natural
growth development. Standing upright one next to the other, they penetrate a sculptural
bronze volume. But what created this piece of bronze with a large dip in the middle at
head height? It is the artist’s breath, exhaled into a pile of fallen leaves: “(…) I wanted (…)
to visualise volume and weight. By breathing into the leaves, I blew them aside. That
gave me an analogue form of my breath.” Casting the act in bronze, the heavy metallic
material depicts the invisible volume of the breath in three dimensions, thus allowing the
beholder to experience the artist’s vigorous life energy. An energy that is inhaled into our
body, pervading it, filling it completely, keeping it alive, finally to be exhaled – an invisible
process, a constant exchange with the world. Giuseppe Penone, an exponent of Arte
Povera, describes the relevance of breath as follows in his prose on the Soffio series:
“Breathing is the automatic, involuntary sculpture that brings us closest to osmosis with
things. It is the action that annuls the shell, the identity of the skin.”
By means of the title, Soffio di foglie, with which the artist forges a link between human
and plant respiration, Penone poetically emphasises the mutual relationship between
the human being and nature, as reflected, for example, by the Greek word pneuma –
meaning breath or wind, but also spirit. What is more, Soffio di foglie also reveals the
significance of energy in nature and culture. By means of sculpture, Penone weaves
the natural energy found in growth processes or in breath with the intellectual energy
upon which all cultural activity is conditioned. The latter is expressed, for example, in the
creation and processing of bronze as a culturally acquired activity or in the creative act
of making an artwork itself.
