Sunny Jain was voted as a rising star percussionist in the 2011 Downbeat magazine critics poll. He
made his professional debut as a dhol drummer playing in the first ever Indian Broadway show, Bombay Dreams (2004). He has since gone on to perform with the famed Sufi-rock band, Junoon, at the
2007 Nobel Peace Prize concert in Oslo, Norway and record the track “Open Your Eyes,“ featuring Peter
Gabriel. He made his Hollywood debut playing dhol in the movie “Accidental Husband“, starring Uma
Thurman, Colin Firth and Isabella Rossellini. Sunny Jain carries a long list of credits as a jazz drummer/composer for his groundbreaking synthesis of Indian Music and jazz/world. He‘s been featured
in Downbeat magazine, Jazztimes, Jazz Hot (France), Jazziz and Traps magazine. He was designated
a 2002 Jazz Ambassador by The Department of State and The Kennedy Center and subsequently received the Arts International Award in 2003 and 2005, and was commissioned in 2006 by Chamber
Music America and in 2008 by Aaron Copland Recording Fund to compose and record new music. He

Sie sind die amerikanisch, indische Antwort auf Balkan
Brass, Russendisko und Latin-Ska-Bands und vereinen Elemente, die wir bei Fanfare Ciocarlia, Gogol Bordello, Shantel/
Bucovina Club oder La Brass Banda hören.
In etwas mehr als nur zwei Jahren hat der bahnbrechende Dhol-n-Brass Sound von Red Baraat als eine der weltbesten Livebands einen Namen gemacht. Unter der Leitung von
Dholtrommler Sunny Jain verschmilzt das neunköpfige Ensemble (mit einer Dhol – einer fassförmigen nordindischen
Trommel, die an einem Gurt über der Schulter getragen wird, Schlagzeug, Perkussion, einem Sousaphon und fünf Bläsern)
den ansteckenden nordindischen Bhangra-Rhythmus mit einer Unzahl anderer Klänge, nämlich Funk, Go-Go, Latin und
Jazz. Kurz gesagt haben Sunny Jain und Red Baraat einen
ganz eigenen Sound geschaffen.
Red Baraat bietet ihren Zuhören die Energie und Spannung der auf nordindischen Hochzeiten üblichen musikalischen Feierlichkeiten. Sie spielen u.a. traditionelle Baraatund Punjabilieder sowie klassische Bollywoodnummern und
vor allem Eigenkompositionen.
Baraat ist das Hindi Wort für Hochzeitsumzug. In Nordindien reitet der Bräutigam traditionell am Hochzeitstag in Begleitung von Familie und Freunden auf einem prachtvoll geschmückten Pferd zum Haus seiner Braut. Der Zug wird von
einer Dholi- und/oder Marschkapelle geleitet. Livemusik ist
daher eine unverzichtbare Komponente dieser freudigen Veranstaltung und regt natürlich auch zum Tanzen und Singen an.
Jain hatte es satt, auf Baraats in den USA immer nur eine Dholi
oder einen DJ zu hören, und beschloss, die musikalische Begabung seiner Freunde zu nutzen. Sein eigener Baraat wurde
dann von einem aus dreissig Musikern bestehenden Ensemble angeleitet. Mit der ganzen Authentizität dessen, was man
in Indien zu hören bekommt, hatte Jain die Musik für dieses
Fest komponiert bzw. bearbeitet. Aus dieser Erfahrung wurde
ihm klar, dass die Staaten eine solche Band gut gebrauchen
können. Red Baraat belegte schnell Platz 1 auf der Liste für
Baraats und besondere Anlässe. Heute kann man Red Baraat
mit gleicher Wahrscheinlichkeit auf einer überhitzten, unangekündigten Lagerhaus-Fete in ihrer Brooklyner Wohngegend
wie im Lincoln Center begegnen; oder auf dem Montreal Jazzfestival genauso wie im Barbican Center in London.
Ihre Spielorte sind mittlerweile weltweit angesehene Festivals und Theater und sie spielen ständig in ausverkauften
Clubs in ganz New York. Die unterschielichsten Einflüsse finden sich in der Musik von Red Baraat wieder und werden jetzt
in ihrem eigenen Stil in die ganze Welt getragen.
Ihre Veröffentlichung, »Chaal Baby« ist die erste CD, die
die Band im Studio aufgenommen hat. Für die europäische
Ausgabe kamen zwei unglaublich mitreissende Titel hinzu, die
bei einer Liveshow im Brooklyner Southpaw zum Anlass des
zweiten Geburtstags von Red Baraat aufgenommen wurden.
Der namensgebende Track ‚Chaal Baby‘ wurde jüngst als
Hintergrundmusik für die Werbespots der Erfolgs-TV-Sendung
„It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia“ verwendet. Seid ihrem
Auftritt auf dem globalFEST 2011 sind Red Baraat ein Publikumsliebling, der von Public Radio International’s The World,
National Public Radio’s All Songs Considered, The New York
Times, The Village Voice und Mother Jones vorgestellt wurde.
Das Debütalbum »Chaal Baby« (Sinj Records) wurde von mehreren Musikkritikern als beste Welt- und Jazzveröffentlichung
2010 gewählt.
Die Band hat auch den Titelsong für den Film „The Yes
Men Fix the World“ aufgenommen und 2009 auf der Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week (NYC) für die Laufstegmodels von
Ports 1961 gespielt. Features zu Red Baraat sind im National

In just over two short years, the pioneering Brooklyn dhol
‚n‘ brass party juggernaut Red Baraat have made a name
for themselves as one of the best live bands playing anywhere in the world. Led by dhol drummer Sunny Jain, the nine
piece comprised of dhol (double-sided barrel shaped North
Indian drum slung over one shoulder) drumset, percussion, a
sousaphone and five horns melds the infectious North Indian
rhythm Bhangra with a host of sounds, namely funk, go-go,
latin, and jazz. Simply put, Sunny Jain and Red Baraat have
created and defined a sound entirely their own.
Red Baraat brings the energy and excitement of the musical festivities found at North Indian weddings. Comprised
of dhol (double-sided, barrel shaped drum slung around the
neck), percussion and horns, this NYC-based group plays traditional baraat songs, Punjabi songs, as well as classic Bollywood numbers and fresh originals. Led by international
drumming sensation, Sunny Jain, it is the first and only Indian
marching band in the Northeast.
Baraat is Hindi for a marriage procession. In North India,
it is a tradition on the day of the wedding for the groom to
travel to his bride’s home on a magnificently decorated horse,
accompanied by family and friends. Led by a dholi and/or a
marching band, the live music is inseparable from this joyous
celebration and naturally induces dancing and singing.
It’s a sound so powerful it has left the band in its own utterly unique and enviable class. These days you are as likely
to find Red Baraat throwing down at an overheated and unannounced warehouse party in their Brooklyn neighborhood
as you are at Lincoln Center. Or the Montreal Jazz Festival. Or
the Barbican. It’s a band unquestionably on the ascent playing some of the most prestigious festivals and theatres worldwide, and keeping their chops razor sharp in basements and
sweaty sold out clubs across New York City. Leading an audi-
ence as diverse and joyful as the band itself, Red Baraat has
subsumed a plateful of global influence, fused it, and is now
exporting it Brooklyn-style to the world.
The group‘s most recent release, »Chaal Baby«, is the
band’s first studio album. For the European release, added
are two incredibly powerful songs from a live show captured at
Brooklyn’s Southpaw on the band’s second anniversary.Most
recently, the title track ‘Chaal Baby‘ is being used as the background music for the promo ads for the hit FX TV show, “It‘s
Always Sunny In Philadelphia“. After the group’s performance
at the 2011 globalFEST, Red Baraat was a top pick favorite
and featured on PRI’s The World, NPR’s All Songs Considered,
New York Times, The Village Voice and others. The group‘s debut CD, »Chaal Baby« (Sinj Records) was voted by several music
critics as a top world and jazz release of 2010.
Since their inception in October 2008, Red Baraat has
delivered blistering performances at globalFEST, Montreal
Jazz Festival, Sunfest, Chicago World Music Festival, Lincoln
Center, The Kennedy Center, Madison World Music Festival,
New Orleans Jazz Festival, Pori Jazz Festival (Finland), Molde Jazz Festival (Norway) and Chicago Folks & Roots Festival, among many others. They also recorded the credit roll
theme song for the movie, “The Yes Men Fix the World“ and
performed for the 2009 Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week (NYC)
for Ports 1961 runway models. Red Baraat has been featured
in National Geographic, Wall Street Journal, The New Yorker,
