S c h w e i n s i t z e n d . Goldberg-Variationen K a t z e s i t z e n d . Du meinst die Rolle des Lesers. K a t z e l a u f e n d . Die gleichen Charaktere sollten nochmals auftreten. E n t e . Und mit einer festgelegten Situation arbeiten. P f a u . F a l a b e l l a . A r a b e r H e n g s t . Die Serie. A f r i k a n i s c h e r E l e f a n t e n b u l l e . Ich bin kein Denkmodell. I schleich_katalog_aktuell_0521 21.05.2006 23:45 Uhr Seite II J a g u a r . Die Sprache wird reprivatisiert. T i g e r i n w e i ß . L ö w i n , s i t z e n d . Die Begriffe tuscheln über die Wirklichkeit. G i r a f f e n b u l l e . Ihr habt zu stimmen, nicht die Bilder. Z e b r a . S c h i m p a n s e n k i n d . Soll das einer lesen? S c h i m p a n s e n - M ä n n c h e n . Das ist mir aber wirklich scheißegal. O r a n g - U t a n - K i n d . Wozu dieser Lärm? L a m a . Damit man nicht alles versteht. D r o m e d a r . Ja, soll man denn nicht alles verstehen? T r a m p e l t i e r . K ä n g u r u h . Geh zum Teufel, du Trampel, wozu taugst du? S t r a u ß . Man soll Polizisten gut verstehen. P a p a g e i , b l a u . F l e d e r m a u s . Sollen wir einander verstehen? K ö n i g s p i n g u i n . Ist nicht erforderlich. K o a l a . E i s b ä r , s t e h e n d . Liegen im Missverständnis Gefahren? P a n d a b a b y . S c h w a r z b ä r i n . II A m e i s e n b ä r . Ist die edle Oberflächlichkeit gemeint? M o s c h u s o c h s e . W e i ß k o p f a d l e r , l a n d e n d . Die edle Oberflächlichkeit nimmt nicht wahr. S e e h u n d . R i e s e n s c h i l d k r ö t e . K r o k o d i l . Wie entsteht die Oberflächlichkeit? H a s e . Ihr Nährboden ist die Dressur. I g e l . R o t h i r s c h . Aber auch nicht Trotz und Abwehr. R e h . Geschweige dialektisch oder Opposition denn Ziel. B a c h e . F r i s c h l i n g , s t e h e n d . Nicht die Wiederholung. F u c h s . Es gibt auch die gemeine Oberflächlichkeit. W o l f . M u r m e l t i e r . Die Meinung zählt dazu. U h u . Auch die Kunst. E i c h h ö r n c h e n , f r e s s e n d . Und die Arbeit. M u t t e r m i t K i n d . Die gemeine Oberflächlichkeit staunt kaum. V a t e r . Sie bohrt nicht in den Gegenstand. F r o s c h . Sie umgeht ihn, um ihn zu konsumieren. W e i ß e M a u s . Sie schweift ins Naheliegende. H a m s t e r . Der Künstler ist klein von Gestalt. Z w e r g k a n i n c h e n . Er ist gradezu mickrig. W e l l e n s i t t i c h g r ü n . Die Kunst ist der Widersacher des Wohlbefindens. III schleich_katalog_aktuell_0521 21.05.2006 23:45 Uhr Seite IV H u n d . Und entsteht aus dem schlechten Geschmack. V e l o c e r a p t o r . Woraus entsteht der Anlass? Q u e t z a l c o a t l o s . Er entsteht aus weiter nichts. S p i n o s a u r u s . Er ist Widersacher der Zeit. D i l o p h o s a u r u s . Er erzeugt die Empfindung. R i e s e n s c h n a u z e r . Den Krieg. D e u t s c h e r S c h ä f e r h u n d , s t e h e n d . Die Waschung. D a l m a t i n e r . Den Einfall. J a c k R u s s e l . Beschert die Feigheit. R a u h a a r d a c k e l . Das Fest. M a n t a . Und die Nachricht. W a l r o s s . Der Anlass ist unentbehrlich. O r k a . Nicht auf das Unglaubliche warten. T i g e r h a i . R i e s e n f a u l t i e r . S m i l o d o n . Man kann den Alltag nicht verlachen. M a m m u t B a b y . T y r a n n o s a u r u s l a u f e n d . Versteh ich nicht. A p a t o s a u r u s . Die Treppe, ein Formular für den Besucher. T y r a n n o s a u r u s R e x . Was man sagen will, mißlingt. P a p a S c h l u m p f . Was man sagen kann, ist verpönt. S c h l a u b i . Was man sagen darf, ist belanglos. B e a u t y . IV S c h l u m p f i n e . Dessen Sprachraum ist verschlossen gegen deine Ausflüge. R i t t e r m i t L a n z e a u f P f e r d . Schlägt Kerben ins Bewusstsein. F ü r s t a u f s t e i g e n d e m P f e r d . Im Juni 2006 werden in Dresden die »100 Bilder aus der Sammlung Schleich« zum ersten Mal auf Großwandfläche zu sehen sein, ein Patchwork aus 3 Aus dem Song: »I Was Born A Unicorn«: »I could have sworn you believed in me, then how come that all other white unicorns you met before are dead.« 207 schleich_katalog_aktuell_0521 21.05.2006 23:45 Uhr Seite 208 mehrdimensionalen, konnotativen Zeichen, die nun auch bei Tageslicht nach Verbündeten oder imaginativen Kollaborateuren suchen. 208 schleich_katalog_aktuell_0521 21.05.2006 23:45 Uhr Seite 210 P Publikation/Katalog Tatjana Doll Gruppenausstellungen (Auswahl) 2006/05/04 Uwaga Berlin!. tunnel of sleep, our thoughts travel back in time, to a past that had not yet indexed and standardized every single name, that had not yet trademarked every single object. A flood of electronic tags and brand names washes around our dreams. These are sampled, over-occupied with blocked signs and cross references. Symbols could be free floating traces, rather than copied dream sequences with login codes, rather than controlled notional modifications, singular loops of restrictions. But brand names subsist since the beginning of the Western industrialization: think of soft drinks, record labels, computers, cars, telephones, software programs, and websites. Was there once a time you could think of a sting ray without stumbling across the triviality of a car? Without hitting on a delineated, registered limitation – decoding prohibited with a vengeance and dreamrighted prosecution? In our world of unconscious perception, of associatively skipping highspeed connections, of a second’s daydream (this self-reflexive core of our being), we are not aware of the pace of the 21st century narrowing down the quality of our metaphors. As if in fast motion, the chains of our visual thoughts loop through overlapping ascriptions, through persistent limitations. A dream sequence jumping in our thoughts actually is a fake image produced by a cross-fader that is leading traces and signs past the target, on a coaxal path. Like an imposed, hyper stimulized, false link-up, that agglutin235 schleich_katalog_aktuell_0521 21.05.2006 23:46 Uhr Seite 236 ates the purging functions of the disposal and plannig units of our physical elementary particles, that silently refocusses the meters of our existential orientation and our structure in our minds and paralyzes them in an apparent order. In the disintegrating sediments of our consciousness, our dream images combine to chunks and globs. Just a little longer, they drift deep down above the river bed, but soon enough they cave in the muddy, sandy ground, where they remain, branded but unread. Tatjana Doll was born in Burgsteinfurt Westphalia in 1970. Her work is a contemplative quest for the fagged particles, for the infinitesimal traces of our experiences on a molecular sub-level. Her tools are varnish and acrylic, oil or carbon. In works like »Ferrari Emission« (Pavillon Karl-Marx-Allee, 1 2005), and »Smoking And Non-Smoking Area« (wallpainting, Bar KMA , Berlin 2006), as well as in her carbon-watercolor-drawings that are larded with subtexts (cf. DOLL , Berlin: Verbrecherverlag, 2005), she is foraging for free junctions and unfilled signs. As, according to Jacques Derrida’s account in »Différance«, the signs must make a journey in order to find each other, in order to reach what’s below the surface and be what really moves the beholder. more sublime forms of changes in direction, on manual re-setting, on the surface and the patchwork. As to the latest series: an ensemble of »100 Paintings From The Schleich Collection« (oil on canvas, in two varying sizes: 23 x 35 inches, and 31 x 39 inches). After her 75 coffee mugs, »Cup-2-Go« from 2003 (tempera on canvas), Tatjana Doll, in an analogy to serial production, now rounds off On a metaphysical level, her paintings send anti-messages that require proper connections. As, according to Derrida, the quest for the ultimate origin in the end cannot complete the process of total exposure. Tatjana Doll reformulates this thesis in her visual connections, dragging them back into the focus of an unaware beholder like the glint of new signs, new contexts, a new coherence or a coherence that had been thought lost. New colors develop, new worlds, surreal trips create vacant surfaces of thought in the beholder who is reading traces like the silent fluttering and whirring of a zooming camera or a slow-mo representation. In the end, there is this an unfamiliar bifurcation, or maybe a new color of our emotions like a persisting, ever reflecting déjà vu. »Déjà Vu« is the title of Doll’s car painting, 13 x 39 feet in size (8 panels, acrylic/varnish, May 2006), an adaption of her own car carrier painting. Her »Déjà Vu« is an inter-textual allusion to her »Saus-und-Braus, Car Carrier« of 2 2002, acrylic/varnish/canvas 13 x 36 feet. What a motive: a car transporter! A boneshaker, built to carry virgin vehicles that, for the sake of their newness, are not yet supposed to run. At least once a day, such a transporter drives past us, but are we aware of this bulky, roaring, varnished metallic colossus? Doll filters the immersed fragments from the sediments and propels them back to the surface, where they can be perceived. Like Jackson Pollock, Tatjana Doll walks across the canvas and leaves her mark, be it streaks of color or finger- and footprints. Like this, Doll weaves herself into the production process, as she says: »in order to prevent the painting from assuming the role of a jewel«. The painting is supposed to »destroy the space around.« As Tatjana has banned autobiography from her paintings, she focuses on the 2 The title is borrowed from Elias Canetti, Der Saus und Braus »that is living in the cities’ storm, landing everywhere with airplanes, while, in ancient times, it would have come with the wind.« 237 1 »Ferrari Emission«: A 90-minute life-exhibition of fourteen Ferrari paintings, where the visitor observed the red panels being taken out of and back to an also red truck. 236 schleich_katalog_aktuell_0521 21.05.2006 23:46 Uhr Seite 238 100 for the first time. Doll puts the soft rubber polyethylene toys from the catalog of the toy character manufacturer Schleich, that was founded in southern Germany in 1935, in a new context. 100 characters come into being on prefab, white primed panels. The painter has made her choice and a new, pastel-colored world arises: it is inhabited with smurfs, dinosaurs, predators, domestic and marine animals, as well as mythical creatures like knights, sorcerers, dragons, and unicorns, who form a non-hierarchic patchwork. Compared to the polyethylene original, Doll’s emerald-green shimmering »Spinosaurus« or the »Black Bear« who seems overgrown with moss instead of fur, in their velvet illumination seem like newly-created living beings. The deep black »Sorcerer«, the manganese blue shimmering »Pegasus« and the rosé-colored »Unicorn« are further elements of the ensemble »100 Paintings From The Schleich Collection«. The painter calls the sorcerer dwarf, probably because he is a little short-legged. Here, you can see once more, that even in the process of painting the signs and images must make a journey. In rock music’s metaphorical language, however, the unicorn emblematizes identity, creativity, and empathy. Grown up with Disney movies like »The Last Unicorn«, the young skater-scene remembers the animal’s symbolic power. The band The Unicorns in their song »I Was Born A Unicorn«, for instance, describe the rare meeting of a white and a black unicorn. They 3 report the danger of false ideas and abused signs. At night, glowing in silence, the characters, like the slightly humpbacked »Lion«, in an unobserved moment, wake up like magic and leave the canvas. 3 »From I Was Born A Unicorn«: »I could have sworn you believed in me, then how come that all other white unicorns you met before are dead.« 238 Bending and stretching, they get rid of the day’s dust. It’s like in the Janosch tale with all the animals waking up, rising from their toy box, as soon as the first rays of moonlight hit them. Then, they enter our daydreams, where the Nutcracker Cheatingtooth, with his interchangable »liars’ denture, the trained fox hunter denture, or his pepper-mill denture«, which he unfortunately had lost »eleven years ago in a storm, as it fell down the bridge into the river« tells his tales – that are not quite true. » If only this isn’t a lie,« the »honest lion Hans« might reply with a shake of his head and, once more, threaten to eat the liar Cheatingtooth. Head over heels in love, Doll’s scarlet »Tournament Knight« might break his canvas like Andersen’s one-legged but »brave tin soldier« to be near his »dancing ballerina of the music box«. Maybe the »Tournament Knight« wouldn’t end up as a heart-shaped nugget in the red-hot ash of the stove, but rise like Doll’s bright yellow »Phoenix« and find his »Damsel Of The Castle« who apparently is very much in love with the image in her mirror. The complete panorama of »100 Paintings From The Schleich Collection« will be shown in Dresden for the first time in June 2006. A patchwork made of multi-dimensional, connotative signs searching for an ally or an imaginative collaborator in broad daylight. In the beholder’s mind, the »Tournament Knight«’s glowing scarlet will be searching for the blazing cyan of the »Dragon« or for the unostentatious white of the »Polar Bear«’s priming. Since, as we have already said, the signs must interact and make a journey in order to find each other, in order to get below the surface, be what really moves the beholder. Only then might the chunks and globs that had been lost in the sable of our thoughts free themselves and drift. What if not cars but Doll’s Knights, Dromedaries, and Two-humped Camels occupied the public parking places? 239 schleich_katalog_aktuell_0521 21.05.2006 23:46 Uhr P Seite 240 publication/catalogue Tatjana Doll Group Exhibitions (selection) 2006/05/06 Uwaga Berlin!.
