MENSAGEM DO PRESIDENTE DO RAMO BRASILEIRO
The Brazilian Branch is proud to host the 73rd Conference of the International Law
Association – the first one to be held in Brazil.
O Ramo Brasileiro da ILA tem o orgulho de recepcionar a 73ª Conferência da International Law
Association – a primeira a ser realizada no Brasil.
ILA biennial conferences are the occasion for its Committees and Study Groups to
present the results of their work achieved during the preceding two years, as well as
a unique opportunity for scholars, judges and practitioners from all over the world to
meet and to assess the progress of contemporary international law.
As conferências bienais da ILA são a oportunidade para seus Comitês e Grupos de Estudos
apresentarem o resultado dos trabalhos realizados durante os dois anos precedentes, bem como
uma ocasião especial para doutrinadores, magistrados e advogados de todas as partes do mundo
se encontrarem e avaliarem os progressos do direito internacional contemporâneo.
The 2008 Conference theme is “Law for the Future”, an expression intended to
convey the idea that international law should be shaped to respond to the needs of
the future. Building upon its 130-plus years of dedication to international law, the ILA
has promoted the opening of new avenues in the study and practice of international
law - ranging from sustainable development, human rights, minorities, refugees and
indigenous peoples to international trade, international investments and international
arbitration, as well as the use of force, space law, nuclear technology regulations and
world governance, all of which will find room for discussions and propositions in Rio
in the relevant Committee and Study Group meetings.
O tema da Conferência de 2008 é “Direito para o Futuro”, uma expressão que tem como
propósito transmitir a idéia de que o direito internacional deve ser moldado com vistas às
necessidades do futuro. Valendo-se de seus mais de 130 anos dedicados ao direito internacional, a
ILA tem promovido a abertura de novos caminhos no estudo e na prática do direito internacional
– abrangendo desde o desenvolvimento sustentável, direitos humanos, direito das minorias, direito
dos refugiados e dos povos indígenas até o comércio internacional, o investimento estrangeiro e a
arbitragem internacional, bem como o uso da força, o direito do espaço, a regulação da tecnologia
nuclear e a governança mundial. Todos esses temas serão objeto de discussão e debates no Rio,
nas respectivas reuniões dos Comitês e Grupos de Estudos.
Running parallel to the Committee and Study Group meetings will be a rich
complementary programme, structured in 6 different tracks, correlative to the work
of the ILA: International Law on Natural Resources and Sustainable Development,
The Human Person in International Law, International Law on Business and Trade,
International Private Dispute Resolution and Law on International Security. Delegates
will certainly find a number of interesting topics in each of these tracks, details of
which are shown in the Conference Programme.
Paralelamente às reuniões dos Comitês e Grupos de Estudos, haverá uma variada programação
científica complementar, estruturada em seis temas correlacionados aos trabalhos da ILA: Direito
Internacional em Recursos Naturais e Desenvolvimento Sustentável, A Pessoa Humana no Direito
Internacional, Direito Internacional dos Negócios e do Comércio, Solução Privada de Litígios
Internacionais e Direito da Segurança Internacional. Os participantes certamente encontrarão um
grande número de tópicos interessantes em cada um desses temas, cujos detalhes se encontram
no Programa da Conferência.
As important and interesting as the contents of the Conference Programme will
be, one cannot think of coming to Rio without expecting some fun. The Organizing
Committee has prepared an exciting social programme, including a Welcome
Reception on Sunday night, a reception by the Governor of the State of Rio de
Janeiro in the Government Palace on Monday night, the traditional Gala Dinner on
Wednesday night, a sample of the world-famous Rio Carnival in the “Samba City” on
Thursday night and, for those wishing to stay on at the end of the Conference, a dayout on a boat tour to a tropical island on Friday.
Por mais importante e interessante que seja o conteúdo do Programa da Conferência, não é
possível pensar em ir ao Rio sem se divertir. O Comitê Organizador preparou uma empolgante
programação social, que incluirá um coquetel de abertura no domingo à noite, uma recepção
do Governo do Rio de Janeiro no Palácio das Laranjeiras na segunda-feira à noite, o tradicional
jantar de gala na quarta-feira à noite, uma amostra do mundialmente conhecido carnaval do Rio
na “Cidade do Samba” na quinta-feira à noite e, para os que permanecerem após o término da
Conferência, uma excursão de barco a uma ilha tropical na sexta-feira.
We are certain that the 73rd ILA Conference in Rio will offer to ILA members and all
those interested in international law a remarkable opportunity to gather and expand
their horizons.
Estamos certos de que a 73ª Conferência da ILA no Rio oferecerá a seus membros e a todos
os interessados no direito internacional uma oportunidade extraordinária para se reunirem e

A limited number of guest rooms has been reserved for the nights of 16-22 August
inclusive, at the Intercontinental Hotel at the rate of US$170 (€111) per room per
night including breakfast plus10% service tax, 5% government tax and US$3 room city
tax for single or double occupancy.
Foi reservada uma quantidade limitada de apartamentos para as noites de 16 a 22
de agosto inclusive, no Hotel Intercontinental, com a diária de US$170 (€111) por
apartamento, incluindo café da manhã, acrescido de 10% de taxa de serviço, 5% de
imposto e US$3 de taxa de ocupação, para um ou dois hóspedes.
This discounted rate applies, subject to availability, if booked via JLC. Bookings can
be accepted by JLC up until 4 August. After that date delegates should make their
bookings directly with the hotel quoting “ILA” as the reference.
A diária com desconto estará sujeita a disponibilidade dos apartamentos, desde que
reservada pela JLC, até 4 de agosto de 2008. Após essa data os participantes devem

translation at the opening and closing ceremonies and the plenary session.

cost of R$ 75 (€ 28) per trip. The Intercontinental also offers a limited limousine

All delegates are responsible for checking visa entry for Brazil. Please contact your
local embassy for information and apply for any required visa well in advance. Visa
letters supporting your application can be issued by JLC once full payment has been
received for your registration. General information on Brazilian visa requirements may

Os participantes serão responsáveis pela obtenção de seus vistos de entrada no
Brasil. Os participantes deverão entrar em contato com a Embaixada do Brasil em
