My specific interests include the micro-level and multi-level analysis of social evaluations, including legitimacy and reputation, the exploration of decoupling from a dynamic perspective, and questions of research design and research methodology, especially the application of experiments and formal modelling approaches in the study of institutionalization and legitimation. Current Topics The Integration of Approaches to Diffusion and Decoupling Under which conditions does the hypocritical adoption of formal corporate responsibility policies in transnational governance prove instable and yield longterm institutional consequences? Endogenous Sources of Institutional Change What explains the sudden decline in the validity of organizations and organizational practices? How can we explore the magnitude of mental and behavioral thresholds in the validation process? The Microfoundation of Institutions: Methodological Challenges What kind of research designs and research methods facilitate the examination of micro- and multi-level institutional processes? What are the opportunities and challenges of (quasi-)experimental methods and formal modeling approaches? The Affective Dimension of Legitimacy Is there an affective component of legitimacy judgments, besides its cognitive and sociopolitical components? How can we conceptualize and examine such an affective component? Reputation as a Buffer vs. Reputation as a Liability What role plays a firm’s reputation in influencing evaluators’ (e.g., customers, investors, stakeholders, etc.) attributions of responsibility and choice behavior following negative events? Does a firm’s reputation weaken or intensify the strength of evaluators’ responses to negative events? The Communicative Constitution of Organizations What is the role of the mass media in stabilizing terrorist organizations (e.g., al Qaeda) that operate under extreme circumstances (restrictions to communication, lacking an overview of their own members, etc.)?
