Im Jahr 2236 feierte die Vereinigte Föderation der Planeten ihren 75. Geburtstag,
zu der auch wegen Capitain Jonathan Archer die Erde gehört. Trotz gelegentlicher
Auseinandersetzungen mit anderen Mächten und Völkern (darunter die Klingonen,
Andorianer oder Tazzi) führte keiner dieser Konflikte zu einem Krieg oder veranlassten
andere Völker zu einem nennenswerten Kräftemessen. Deutliche Fortschritte im
Bereich der Waffentechnik, Sensor- und Antriebstechnik ließen im Sternenflottenkommando Überlegungen zu einem flottenweiten Modernisierungsprogramm reifen.
Insbesondere die Fortschritte bezüglich der immensen Effizienzsteigerung bei den
Materie-Anti-Materie Reaktoren – dank besseren Dilithium-Flusses und Verdoppelung
des Energieausstoßes bei gleichzeitiger Verkleinerung der Reaktorgröße – eröffneten
die Möglichkeiten für ein Warp-6-fähiges Schiff mit weitaus weiterer Reichweite als
jemals zuvor. Die Entscheidung für die neue, Constitution genannte Klasse, die
für Entdeckung, Forschung und Verteidigung gleichermaßen eingesetzt werden
sollte, erfolgte Ende 2236. Bewährte Elemente wie die Untertassensektion mit der
mittig auf ihr platzierten Kommandozentrale, in der alle wichtigen Funktionen wie
Kommunikation, Umweltkontrollen, Schutzschilde, Navigation, Waffensysteme, etc.
von den leitenden Offizieren überwacht und kontrolliert wurden, sollten beibehalten
werden. Auch der angehängte Rumpf mit der Reaktor- und Antriebstechnik waren
wie die über Streben mit dem Schiff verbundenen Triebwerksgondeln weiterhin
gewünscht. Dennoch erhielt dieser neue Schiffstyp das wohl ambitionierteste Design
seiner Zeit. In der fast 130 Meter langen Untertassensektion befanden sich jetzt unter
anderem 14 Wissenschaftslabore und für Forschungen notwendige Ausrüstungen.
Torpedoschächte und Phaser Emitter verschwanden bei der Constitution Klasse,
dessen ersten Exemplare 2240 erprobt wurden, hinter beweglichen Abdeckungen.
Ein langer Sensor im Deflektor erlaubte Scans weit in den tiefen Raum hinein, aber
auch durch dicke Wolkendecken bis zu Planetenoberflächen. Das Impulsdeck war
völlig neu erstellt, wesentlich kompakter als bei vorherigen Mustern und beeinträchtigte kaum die harmonische Form der Untertasse. Der große Deflektor am Kopfstück
der Antriebssektion war ebenfalls spürbar größer, allerdings wegen der gesamten
Länge des Schiffs von 288,6 Metern und der weitaus höheren Geschwindigkeit
auch dringend erforderlich. In der restlichen Antriebssektion waren unter anderem
Plasmaleitungen, der Materie-Anti-Materie-Reaktor, Anti-Materie-Tanks, sowie der
Maschinenkontrollraum untergebracht. Probleme mit dem neuartigen M/AM-Reaktor
waren erst 2245 völlig behoben, so dass das erste Schiff der Constitution-Klasse, die
USS Constitution, ab September 2245 ihren Dienst in der Sternenflotte antrat, gefolgt
von dem United Star Ship Enterprise (NCC-1701) zwei Monate später. Mit einer
Geschwindigkeit von bis zu Warp-9 waren die Schiffe der Constitution-Klasse schneller als geplant. Ab Mitte des 23. Jahrhunderts stießen die Schiffe der Constitution
Klasse immer tiefer in bisher unbekannte Bereiche vor, die noch nie ein Mensch zuvor
gesehen hatte. Die enorme Leistungsfähigkeit des Schiffstyps erlaubten der bis zu
430 Mann starken Besatzung mehrjährige Forschungsreisen. Berühmt wurde die
Enterprise durch ihre Fünf-Jahres-Mission unter dem Kommando von Capitain James
T. Kirk und seinem ersten Offizier Spock, die 2265 begann. Während dieser Zeit traf
die Crew der Enterprise mehrfach auf den neuen Kreuzertyp der Klingonen, der D7,
unter anderem bei dem Planeten Oriana und später auf der Raumstation 7, wie auch
auf die Romulaner und Tholianer.
Die Constellation unter dem Kommando von Kommodore Decker vernichtet im
Jahr 2267 ein schlauchartiges, gigantisches automatisiertes Waffensystem und
rettet durch seine Selbstzerstörung weitere Planeten vor deren Vernichtung. Die
USS Potemkin taucht in der bekannten Fernsehserie mehrfach auf. Die Enterprise
beschädigt sie schwer, als der Computer M5 kurzzeitig deren Steuerung übernimmt.
In the year 2236 the United Federation of Planets, to which the earth belonged also
of Captain Jonathan Archer, celebrated their 75th anniversary. Despite occasional
disputes with other powers and peoples (including the Klingons, Andorians or Tazzi)
none of these conflicts led to a war or caused other peoples to make a noteworthy
show of force. Clear advances in the field of weapons technology, sensor and
propulsion technology caused the Star Fleet Command to deliberate over a
fleet-wide modernisation programme. In particular the advances relating to the
immense improvement in the efficiency of matter/anti-matter reactors – thanks to a
better dilithium flow and a doubling of energy output concurrent with a reduction in
reactor size – opened up possibilities for a Warp 6 capable ship with a much longer
range than ever before. The decision in favour of the new Constitution Class, which
was to be used simultaneously for exploration, research and defence, was taken at
the end of 2236. Proven elements such as the saucer section with the command pod
placed in the centre of it, in which all important functions such as communication,
environmental controls, protective shields, navigation, weapons systems etc, would
be supervised and controlled by the commanding officers, were to be retained. Also
the attached hull with the reactor and propulsion technology
(= engineering hull)
and the engine nacelles linked to the ship by struts, were still required.
Consequently, this new type of ship received the most ambitious design of its time.
The almost 130 m long saucer section now included 14 science laboratories and the
apparatus needed for experiments. Torpedo tubes and phaser emitters disappeared
behind movable screens in the Constitution Class, the first examples of which were
tested in 2240. A long sensor in the deflector enabled scans far into deep space,
even penetrating thick cloud cover as far as planet surfaces. The impulse deck was
completely redesigned, much more compact than in previous types and made little
difference to the harmonious shape of the saucer. The large deflector on the head
end of the engineering section was also appreciably larger, but the overall length of
the ship at 288.6 m and the much higher speed made it absolutely essential. In the
rest of the engineering section were located plasma lines, the matter/anti-matter
reactor, anti-matter tanks and the control room. Problems with the new type of M/AM
reactor were not totally eliminated until 2245, so that the first ship of the Constitution
Class, the USS Constitution, went into service with the Star Fleet in September
2245, followed by the United Starship Enterprise (NCC-1701) two months later. With
a maximum speed of Warp-9, the ships of the Constitution Class were faster than
planned. From the middle of the 23rd century, the ships of the Constitution Class
ventured ever deeper into previously unknown realms that had never before been
seen by man. The enormous capability of this type of ship enabled a crew of up to
430 men to undertake exploration voyages of several years. The Enterprise was
famous for its five-year mission under the command of Captain James T. Kirk and
First Officer Spock which started in 2265. Several times during this period the crew
of the Enterprise met the new type of Klingon cruiser the D7, including at the planet
Oriana and later at Space Station 7, and also the Romulans and Tholians.
In 2267, the Constellation under the command of Commodore Decker exterminated
a gigantic automated tubular weapon system and by its own self-destruction saved
other planets before they were exterminated. The USS Potemkin appears several
times in the well-known TV series. The Enterprise caused it serious damage when
the computer M5 took over its control for a short time.
