The Hermannshöhen® include the 160 km Hermannsweg and the
70 km Eggeweg walking trails along the heights of the Teutoburg
Forest and the Eggegebirge hills. Each trail promises close proximity
to nature and unique insights into the history and culture around the
Teutoburg Forest and the Eggegebirge. Ridgeways with a variety of
breathtaking panoramas.
Both these traditional ridge trails are more than 100 years old. They
traverse large parts of the TERRA.vita and Teutoburger Wald/Eggegebirge nature parks. The Hermannsweg is regarded as one of the most
scenic ridge trails in Germany and was honoured as a top-quality waymarked trail by the association of German Walking Clubs. It starts in
the parks of the Münsterland and ends on the rock formations of the
Velmerstot in Lippe, offering wonderful views over the surrounding
countryside. Historic town centres, the Hermannsdenkmal monument,
castles and monasteries are witnesses to a rich past.
The Eggeweg’s charm lies in its intimacy with nature: it was the
first walking trail certified by the quality seal of approval of the
­association of German walking clubs. This walk along the wooded
ridge begins at the Externsteine rock formation and leads past the
468 m high Prussian Velmerstot, the highest elevation within the
­Hermannshöhen®, and into the northern reaches of the Sauerland.

Experience the balance between body and soul, of movement,
relaxation and pleasure in the spa landscape of the Teutoburg
Forest.
On quiet and well-signposted trails, the cycling route leads you to
seven first-rate spas and many health resorts in the „Healing Garden
of Germany“, through ever changing scenery and passing numerous
landmarks. Two cross-links divide the 500km long route into three
shorter circuits, allowing the cyclist to explore longer or shorter
journeys depending on physical strength, time and inclination.

This annual garden landscape project is the cultural emblem of the region around the Teutoburg Forest. A special feature is its unique combination of garden design with fine arts, music and literature. Focal
points are the art installations within “Rauminszenierungen bildender
Kunst“, the literature and music festival “Wege durch das Land”, and
the garden restoration programme “Neue »Alte« Gärten“ piloted by
the regional commission for local communities Landschaftsverband
Westfalen-Lippe. The annual events programme presents art, culture
and landscape in beautiful and unusual locations, rediscovering and
honouring the gardening history of the region. Experience outdoor
art installations by renowned artists such as Olafur Eliasson, Jenny
Holzer, Jan Vercruysse and Georg Condo. Their site-specific works put
the spotlight on the historic gardens and modern parks set within the
wonderful landscapes of the rivers Weser and Ems.
Follow in the footsteps of poets and thinkers like Rainer Maria

Ravensberg Castle Ruin
High on the ridge of the Teutoburg Forest, a massive tower glances out from behind dense woodlands. Anyone who reaches the thick sandstone
walls will recognise this as a fortified tower with
its thirty battlements and an old surrounding
wall. Ravensberg Castle was one of the mightiest
fortified castles in Northern Germany. This was a
place of fighting and conquering.
To protect his dominion, Hermann II of
­Cavelage, Count of Ravensburg, erected Ravensberg Castle around 1080 as a military stronghold.
The building robustly withstood numerous
assaults for many centuries and behind its fortifications offered safety to many famous lords of
the castle. Its final demise was not due to enemy
attack, but to a decree by King Wilhelm I who had
the castle partly pulled down in 1733 to use the
stones for new buildings. After a campaign to
save the castle, it now presents itself in new glory.
From the observation tower, where Hermann
II of Cavelage surveyed his territory, the visitor
can enjoy a unique panorama over the Ravensberg hills and the Gütersloh district far into the
Münsterland.
Corvey Castle
Corvey Castle is a place unique for its archi­
tecture, culture and history. The ensemble of
buildings including the almost 1200 year old
westwork entrance, the baroque abbey church,
the castle featuring an ornate emperor’s hall,
the cloister and the magnificent princely library
­containing more than 70,000 volumes, in which
the German poet Hoffmann von Fallersleben
worked as a librarian, radiates a distinctive cultural and historical aura. Due to its importance,
Corvey has been nominated for UNESCO World
Heritage Site status.
Corvey Castle offers a delightful mix of arts
and culture. The westwork and the baroque
prince-bishop’s residence are its focal points.
­Concerts and festivals, the museum Höxter­Corvey with its permanent collections and
numerous special exhibitions, and the adjacent
restaurant and winery attract visitors from
around the world.
Wewelsburg Castle
At a significant historic site, Germany’s only
­triangular castle sits majestically above the
Paderborner Land. The district museum of
Wewelsburg documents the history of this
­impressive, three-sided castle enclosure, built in
the Weser Renaissance style from 1603 to 1609
by the Paderborn prince-bishops. It also shows
the history of the region around Paderborn from
first settlement to secularisation in 1802.
A permanent exhibition on “Wewelsburg
1933 – 1945” gives information on its occupation
by the SS. In their former guardhouse, photos,
documents and models bear witness to the
Niederhagen concentration camp which was
located here.
In addition to the museum, the castle’s south
wing houses a large modern youth hostel. Explore
the Alme river cycling trail and break your journey
in the romantic river valley with its magnificent
views of the towering castle.

Sparrenburg Castle
Sparrenburg Castle is Bielefeld’s landmark and
the favourite destination for visitors to the town.
Situated high above the old town and nestling
within the Teutoburg Forest, its tower welcomes
all from afar.
The medieval castle was built between 1214
and 1250 by the Count of Ravensberg. Every day
from April to October, visitors can climb the 37 ­m
high tower to enjoy an impressive panorama
over the town and the surrounding countryside.
Twice a day, guided tours are on offer through
the extensive maze of underground passages, the
casemates. Special guided tours for groups can be
arranged on request.
Sparrenburg Castle also provides the striking
backdrop for the annual Sparrenburgfest, a
­medieval spectacular at the end of July. History
and culture of the late Middle Ages come vividly
to life during this three-day event.
Neuhaus Castle
Neuhaus Castle – one of the most beautiful
moated castles of the Weser Renaissance in Westfalia – is the former residence of the Paderborn
prince-bishops. Begun as early as the 13th century,
extensions to the castle continued until the 16th
century, giving its present four wings with four
round corner towers and a moat. The building,
situated on a peninsula formed by the rivers
Alme, Lippe and Pader, now houses a school.
For the regional garden festival in 1994, the
castle and its ancillary buildings were restored
and the baroque garden was laid out to original
18th century plans. Since then, the area has
been a popular public park – the “Schloss- und
Auenpark”. With its museums, galleries and two
restaurants, and a varied summer culture and
events programme within the framework of the
“Paderborner Schloßsommer”, the castle and its
meadow parklands make a very attractive leisure
destination.
Dalheim Monastery –
Museum of Monastic Culture
Medieval nunnery, Augustinian canonry, prosperity in the Baroque period, Prussian state demesne,
estate farm – after 550 years of chequered history, Dalheim Monastery has started a new phase.
Uniquely in Europe, it now houses a museum of
monastic cultural life. Significant and precious
exhibits are displayed in the almost completely
preserved monastery buildings which have, over
the centuries, maintained an impressive power
and calm nestling in the gently rolling country­
side of the surrounding Altenau valley.
With its Gothic cloisters, luxuriant gardens
and newly designed exhibition rooms, the LWL
regional museum of monastic culture invites
the visitor to discover the fascinating variety
within monastic life. The baroque former convent
garden at the heart of the monastery, once the
sole preserve of Augustinian canons for their rest
and recreation, now attracts many visitors with
its floral splendour, its vegetables and a host of
medical and symbolic plants.
A variety of scenic trails around the monastery
at Dalheim offer opportunities for shorter strolls
or extended walking tours.

AQUA MAGICA Landscape
and Culture Park
The Aqua Magica landscape and culture park
is a favourite destination for all the family. The
main attraction of the c.20 hectare park is a giant
water crater 18 meters deep, into which you can
climb. Experience the colossal forces of a 30 meter water fountain, shooting skywards at regular
intervals accompanied by exciting light and
sound installations. Other attractions include the
world climate avenue with its 240 plane trees,
show gardens created by local garden centres, the
Aqua Magica Glasshouse Café and ingenious play
areas for children. This contemporary landscape
and culture park has a varied events programme
catering for all ages. Over several days at the end
of August, the unique literary festival „Poetische
Quellen“ acquaints visitors with a great variety of
poetic sources.
On a beautiful natural stage, literature buffs
congregate to meet internationally renowned
authors, young poets and pugnacious writers for
readings, discussions and talks while feasting
their eyes on the green oasis around them.
Stukenbrock Hollywood
and Safari Park
For those who believe that the local fauna at the
edge of the Teutoburg Forest restricts itself to
deer, foxes and hares, the zoo and safari park at
Schloß Holte-Stukenbrock is full of surprises: the
only white lions in Europe stretch out contentedly
in the sand while tigers prowl and giraffes and
elephants move gracefully around. The sensational attraction are the white tigers, of whom
only very few survive around the world. Covering
650,000 m2, the park offers a combination of
entertainment and safari with 600 animals from
all over the planet in realistic habitats.
After a safari through the wilderness, Europe’s
fastest and highest wild water rafting course, the
“Kongo River” provides thrills of a special kind.
Twenty adventure rides guarantee beastly fun
for all the family, from the mega drop of “Giraffe
Tower”, to the “Flying Elephant” and the wild
journey on a rollercoaster called “MarienkäferAchterbahn”. Little water rats can romp about in
the knee-deep pool of the water playground.
Africa and the Wild West are never closer than
at the Hollywood and Safari Park in the district
of Gütersloh. Breathtaking magical shows in
the Hollywood Theatre bring the glamour of the

Externsteine
The Externsteine rock formation was of major
importance to our ancestors even as early as the
Stone Age. Visit and admire this towering group
of rocks reaching up to 35m in the Teutoburg
Forest/Eggegebirge nature reserve and discover
on a guided tour its history and origins. Enjoy
the mystical ambience, the peace and quiet
and the fantastic views on a walk around the
­Externsteine.
The rock formation is part of the central ridge
of the Teutoburg Forest created from s­ andstone
in the Lower Cretaceous period. During the
shaping of the hills around 70 million years ago,
the originally horizontal layer of lower cretaceous
sandstone was pressed vertically upwards in the
Externsteine area. This distinctive rock formation
is part of a nature reserve of the same name. The
relief depicting Christ’s Descent from the Cross,
dating from around 1150, is a central feature. It is
one of the earliest Christian monumental stone
sculptures and the most significant record of its
kind in the whole of Northwestern Europe.

Olderdissen Animal Park
Olderdissen Animal Park, a much loved visitor
attraction, has been in existence for over 75 years.
Many of its features have changed, been enlarged
and improved since its opening, but its main aim
has been constant: to make local flora and fauna
accessible to all. The animal park now houses
around 450 animals of 100 indigenous species,
including many protected varieties.
The total area of 15 hectares is situated in
the heart of the Teutoburg Forest, surrounded
by beautiful countryside with fields, woods,
meadows and ponds. A zoo school, a café with
outdoor seating, a playground – Olderdissen
Animal Park is a destination for all the family. And
best of all: it is open 24 hours a day and charges
no admission.
After a short stroll through the Teutoburg
­Forest, you arrive at the nearby Bielefeld Botanical Garden. This garden is also open all year round
and free of charge.
Gütersloh Botanical Garden
Awarded third place in the competition to find
Germany’s most beautiful parks in 2006: The
Gütersloh Botanical Garden. Designed as a
show and flower garden at the beginning of the
19th century, the botanical garden in Gütersloh
displays an impressive range of plants and an
attractive combination of historical elements and
contemporary art. Architectural focal point is the
light flooded palm house café, the opulence of
art nouveau with the straight lines of modernism
combining into a temple to pleasure.
The botanical garden is an encyclopaedia of
design ideas for garden lovers and it provides a
world of colours and scents with oases of calm
to stroll and relax in. The seven themed gardens
were individually arranged to offer inspiration
and information at the same time. The visitor
can witness the growth, flowering and scent of
plants close up, or study the healing powers of
more than 100 medicinal plants in the apothecary garden. In his tunnel of scents, Danish artist
Olafur Eliasson has created a symphony for sensitive noses. This permanent three-dimensional
installation presents a harmonious composition
of tender rose fragrances and spicy herbs while
walking through an arbour.
Hammerhof Forest
Information Centre
In Warburg – Scherfede, in the Hochstift forestry
area, the “Hammerhof” information centre on
forests, wood and the environment welcomes
visitors. It was opened in 2004 by the forestry
commission of Northrhine-Westfalia. Through
exhibitions, seminars, guided tours and lectures,
you can learn about the region and its forests.
The on-site café is open Tuesday to Sunday after­
noons and on request. Home-made cakes and
venison products are house specialities.
The forest information centre is adjacent
to a 170 hectare bison enclosure. The last freeroaming bison in Germany was shot in 1755. To
prevent extinction of this, the largest European
land mammal, the Hardehausen bison enclosure
was established in 1958 by the regional forestry
commission. Since 2004, and uniquely within
Europe, the two bison subspecies of Caucasian
mountain bison and Lowland bison have lived
here in separate enclosures.
In addition to bisons, the centre is home to a
breeding group of around twenty Tarpan horses.
These horses became extinct in the wild at the
end of the 19th century. Two further enclosures
protect wild boar and white deer.

Westfalian Mill Trail
The Westfalian Mill Trail connects 43 wind, water
and horse mills, most in good working order, in
addition to Germany’s only working boatmill on
the river Weser near Minden, creating a unique
mill museum on a circular route of around
300 km between the Weser, the Wiehen hills and
the Dümmer lake. The versatility and fascination
of traditional milling skills are demonstrated at
the milling and baking days on the Westfalian
Mill Trail. They bring the past to life in an air of
romanticism and offer visitors Westfalian hospitality with special delicacies.
The complete route can be divided into three
attractive stages allowing shorter day trips.
Bespoke itineraries in combination with the fleet
of white cruise boats on the river Weser and the
Mittelland canal, and an authentically restored
Prussian steam train are also available. Cyclists
and walkers enjoy a leisurely stroll or a daydream
on their own trail networks, away from the busy
main roads. Tailor-made pre-arranged holiday

Kaiser Wilhelm Monument
The Kaiser Wilhelm monument is one of the most
significant and most visited tourist attractions
in Germany. Built with sandstone from the Porta
region between 1892 and 1896, and with an
overall height of 88 meters, it towers over the
well-known geographical landmark of Porta
Westfalica, where the river Weser breaks through
the Wiehen and Weser hill ranges.
From here, the visitor enjoys a magnificent
panorama over the Weser hills and the northern
German lowlands. The monument to emperor
Wilhelm is also a junction of major walking trails
in an attractive walking region with p
­ rehistoric
mound systems and the foundations of a
­cruciform church from the 10th century – an
­archaeological and architectural rarity in Europe.
A wide variety of leisure opportunities are
accessible from here, including river cruises on
the Weser.
Hermannsdenkmal
monument
The Hermannsdenkmal monument in the
Teutoburg Forest – landmark of Detmold and of
the whole region. The 53.5 m high monument
commemorates the famous Varus battle against
the Romans 2000 years ago.
On old Germanic fortifications, a large defensive earth and stone ring provides a plateau of
500 m long by 400 m wide. The plan to erect an
imposing monument to Arminius originated with
Ernst von Bandel, a 19th architect and sculptor
working in Hannover and Berlin. Bandel staked all
his personal wealth realising his life’s ambition
to create this structure. He single-mindedly
over­came strong opposition to his ideas. Bandel
­started work on his chosen hilltop site in 1838,
but it took 37 years until the summer of 1875
for him to see completion of his monument.
During the last years of building, the artist lived
per­manently on “his mountain” in a rudimentary wooden hut, the “Bandelhütte”. Climb the
monument today and be enticed by the story of
Arminius – Hermann the Cherusker. An attractive
destination for ­families, groups, and all those
­interested in culture and the natural environment.

Minden Waterways Crossing
The waterways crossing is located to the north of
Minden, where the Mittelland canal passes over
the river Weser. The main buildings for crossing
and connecting the two waterways were created
between 1911 and 1914. At 325 km, the Mittelland
canal is the longest artificial inland waterway in
Germany; it connects the Dortmund-Ems canal
with the river Elbe and the Elbe-Havel canal.
The Minden waterways crossing is the second
largest in Europe after the one in Magdeburg and
its boatlift is one of the major tourist attractions
of the region. If you are visiting Minden and its
windmill trail, why not combine this with a boat
trip? The Mindener Fahrgastschifffahrt company
offers a range of cruises on the river Weser and
the Mittelland canal. Highlight of many boat
excursions is a journey through the historic
Minden boat lift with its lock chamber, the
Schacht­schleuse, negotiating a height difference
of 13 meters. A variety of cruises offer you the
chance to see Minden and its surroundings from
a very different perspective. The Minden boatlift
also provides an excellent starting point for walks
and cycling tours along the Weser.
Widukind Museum
Widukind – Saxon aristocrat, heathen freedom
fighter, Christian hero or rebel? His true life and
deeds remain hidden in the dark recesses of
history – but they still create the great Widukind
myth. The Franconian empire’s annals document
heavy fighting between Saxons and Franconians
in the years from 772 until 785. As leader of the
Saxons, Widukind is said to have organised uprisings against the Franconian forces. He eventually ended his resistance and allowed himself to
be baptised. Those are the only confirmed facts
about Widukind. Every epoch creates its own
image of this Saxon nobleman.
The newly opened Widukind Museum in
Enger welcomes the visitor on a journey through
the centuries. Learn more about the changing
approach to the figure of Widukind and go on an
exhilarating search for the real man, analysing
bone fragments and other relics. A system of
audio guides is an integral part of the exhibition.

Open Air Museum
90 hectares and more than 100 buildings
welcome the visitor: Germany’s largest open air
museum offers a variety of weather dependant
activities and experiences from April to October.
There is always so much to discover about rural
life past and present, throughout the seasons.
And admission charges are low. The information
office and the individual house guides will try to
answer any question you may have. The museum
shop in the entrance pavilion sells books, crafts
and products made at the museum and in the
region.
Refreshments are available in one of the
restaurants, such as the new “Im weißen Ross”
in the Paderborn village, or you can bring your
own picnic. Our workshops are a central feature
of the museum experience and are always open
on special events days. In addition, educational
programmes and guided tours are on offer.

Bad Salzuflen
Gradierwerk experience
You cannot miss Bad Salzuflen’s landmarks:
the Gradierwerke, giant interwoven blackthorn
hedges, over 300 m long, reaching skywards.
Often wrongly called “Salinen” salt works, these
hedges were originally used to produce salts and
are now an extensive open-air inhalation park,
bringing a fresh sea breeze into the centre of the
town. Up to 600,000 litres of saltwater trickle
over these imposing structures every day,
thereby giving a healthy maritime climate all
year round.
A special visitor attraction in Bad Salzuflen
is the walk-through ErlebnisGradierwerk experience. This new facility was built in 2007 and

passageway with small tranquil alcoves leads to
a saltwater misting chamber, in which the visitor
can deeply inhale the freshest sea air. Saltwater
is not only sprinkled onto it from the outside, but

Westfalen Culinarium
The unique museum concept of the Westfalen

MARTa Herford opened on May 7th 2005.
With the triad of “M” (for Möbel=furniture),
“ART” and “a” (for architecture/ambience), the
project gives new momentum to art, design,
architecture and business in the Herford region
and far beyond.
The stunning creation by world-renowned
architect Frank Gehry is a cutting-edge combination of museum, centre of excellence and events
forum. Regular exhibitions reflect contemporary
positions on art and design. The museum aims
to pinpoint and redefine the often contradictory
interdependency of business and art. In addition
to its events forum, MARTa Herford offers spaces
for private functions, cultural and business

City Art Gallery
In 1968, the Kunsthalle Bielefeld was opened as
a museum and exhibition space for international
20th century art. It was built by the New York
architect and art historian Philip Johnson. The
pink sandstone cube houses Bielefeld’s permanent civic collection focussing on masterworks
of Expressionism by Beckmann, Heckel, Kirchner,
Nolde and Schmidt-Rottluff. Cubist sculptures are
a further highlight, complemented by groups of
works from Max Ernst, Man Ray, Anselm Kiefer
and Georg Baselitz.
In addition to showing its permanent collec­
tion, the Kunsthalle stages four major annual
exhibitions featuring classic Modernism, Expressionism, contemporary art and photo­graphy.
Exhibitions on Picasso, Matisse, Caspar David
Friedrich, Kasimir Malewitsch, Donald Judd and
Emil Nolde have attracted international acclaim.
The City Art Gallery is situated on the edge
of Bielefeld’s old town with its numerous sights,

MuseumsForum (HNF)
The is the largest computer museum in the
world. On more than 6,000 m2 of exhibition
space, the museum illustrates the development
of numbers and writing into the computer age
of the 21st century. Among the more than 2,000
exhibits are historic typewriters and calculating
machines, the first PCs, and the latest developments in software and intelligent robots.
The HNF sees itself as an interactive venue.
Multi-media terminals, audio and video installations and functioning models invite the visitor
to get hands-on. The software theatre offers the
opportunity to experience cyberspace while in
the foyer you can test new PC games. In addition
to the permanent collection, changing special
exhibitions at the HNF illustrate the role of IT in
numerous real-life applications, such as medicine,
sports and mathematics.
The MuseumsForum houses not only the
computer museum, but also a conference and
congress centre, a specialist and executive
­training forum and a bistro.
