Castle - Lousã Castle, also known as Arunce Castle, is one of the very few
castles built in schist. It is part of one of the first defense lines created to
control the south access to Coimbra during the second half of the 11th
Century. In 1124, an Islamic incursion took the castle and, according to
ancient legend, during this period the castle was used by the Arab leader to
protect his daughter Peralta and their treasures after having been defeated
and expelled from Conimbriga. Hermitages - the Hermitage of Nossa
Senhora da Piedade is located on the hill opposite to the Castle. It has four
chapels; the oldest is S. João which was erected in the 15th Century. Considerable restoration work has been carried out and several annual pilgrimages
and religious festivals now take place here. Hermitage Power Station - the
Hermitage Hydroelectric power station, which is still operational, was built
in 1927 to supply electricity to the village and to the paper mill. It is a living
testimony of a past when Lousã was the epicenter of an intense industrial
activity.Mountain villages – despite the 1950's human desertification, these
villages are currently recovering and gaining new life thanks to a series of
national and international programs. The houses are also being recovered
by new owners from main urban centres, who are once again filling these
homes with life.

This walk is mainly on the slopes of the Lousã mountains and links Lousã
Castle and the sanctuary of “Nossa Senhora da Piedade” with two of the
most emblematic Schist Villages of these mountains, Talasnal and Casal
Novo. This walk takes you on a journey through time as well, as it
retraces the paths of the former inhabitants of these mountain villages
using the only access routes to the town of Lousã. Leaving the Castle
towards the recommended direction, follow the access track that leads
to the Ermida hydroelectric station. This is an example of industrial
archeology built in 1927 to supply the town and the Prado paper factory
with electricity. From here follow a steep and narrow path that snakes
up the mountainside towards the Schist villages. The route is surrounded
by dense vegetation all season long and the landscape is always
stunning. Just before reaching the village of Talasnal there is an alternative route (PR2.1) which leads back to the Sanctuary and the river beach
near the castle. We recomend this shorter route if you prefer a less
demanding walk. It will take you across the slope overlooking the S.
João stream from where you will get magnificent views of the village of
Talasnal and of the Lousã valley. If you continue on the main route you
will pass through the narrow streets of Talasnal and you will keep
climbing up to Casal Novo. From here a steep descent takes you back to
the Sanctuary, the river beach and then to the final section of the walk
back to the castle.

The Lousã Mountains are the home of important communities of plants and
wildlife both in terms of biodiversity and conservation, including species
and habitats protected by National and International Directives. Of particular importance are the fescue, the daffodil, the ruivaco, the gold-striped
salamander, Schreiber's green lizard, the black stork, Montagu's
Harrier, the common kingfisher and the otter. Although most of the forest
has species which have been introduced recently in forestry operations
such as pine trees and eucalyptus, you can also still find areas with
Mediterranean species such as the Holm oak, the Portuguese oak, the cork
oak, the strawberry tree and aromatic herbs, in particular near the streams.
As well as the common wildlife found in national mountainous areas, you
may also see two species of deer, the leaf deer and the European roe deer.
These animals were reintroduced to the area in 1996, and despite being
timid and territorial, they are now established throughout the mountains.
