Children from poor families get free meals. Fewer than half of all English schoolchildren have school meals. Many take a packed lunch to school. Now the famous English top chef Jamie Oliver, cookery writer, restaurant owner and father of two children, has started a project in a comprehensive school in south-east London. At lunchtime, he cooks for the pupils and they can choose from three dishes like Mediterranean food, salads or desserts and home-made cakes. The programme is used to change the children’s eating habits. Before Oliver took over the school kitchen, the pupils were served normal canteen food: burgers, chicken nuggets, baked beans, sausages, pizza and of course chips. It isn’t easy to cook for schools. Meals have to be cheap and another problem is children’s tastes. Most of them really like junk food and don’t prefer healthy vegetables and fruits. They aren’t interested in trying new food. But the school cook has already noticed some progress: he is using more salad than he did before. Teachers say school meals can have a big influence on learning. Children that get good food learn better. And for some kids, it is their only proper meal of the day.
