A visit to
“Berlin Moscow”
Our tasting series started in spring with the newly opened Habanos Smokers’
Lounge in the restaurant „Berlin Moscow“.
T
o create spaces for cigar smokers – that
is the aim of the so-called Habanos Smokers‘ Lounges, a lounge concept dreamed up
by 5th Avenue Products Trading GmbH,
which now boasts a dozen excellent oases for
the smoker in Germany.
In the late winter of 2012, the restaurant Berlin Moscow opened in Berlin right opposite
the Russian Embassy near the Brandenburg
Gate. Here the owners set up a modern Habanos Smokers‘ Lounge on the first floor,
with plenty of glass. Dr. Max Herzog, who
runs three wonderful specialist dealerships
in Berlin, supplies the lounge with cigars. It
may be generously appointed, but faced with
a seven-hour long tasting marathon, the ventilation system was close to reaching its limits
by the end.
For this edition, we tested numerous classics
as well as some completely new cigars. Many
of these are not yet on the market in Europe
or the USA. The range of products and blends

appears to be ever expanding, with the manufacturers cultivating new tobaccos and
dreaming up new formats – in keeping with
the trend in America this includes many large
calibre exemplars. However, the quality of the
cigars has been impressive all the way through
from the first to the last tasting session.
Naturally, all the cigars were tasted blind, and
once again, our panel members did a great
job. I would like to take this opportunity to
point out that many of them put themselves
to considerable effort and expense in order
to take part in the tasting sessions, which
are held in towns all over Europe. For this, I
would like to offer sincere thanks on behalf of
the Cigar Journal.

This Torpedo draws very well. On the palate it releases a wonderful

A piquant, extraordinarily aromatic cigar, which, from the first draw
onwards, exudes full woody and earthy aromas, bitter chocolate notes

At first the dark Torpedo offers a pleasant chocolatey sweetness, which

In the first few draws this excellently manufactured large cigar releases mainly woody and here, particularly, cedar aromas; afterward
it increases in flavor. Overall, a somewhat mild cigar that towards
the end gains a bit more in body.

Unfortunately, the Churchill draws a little too tight and burns unevenly. In spite of that, it offers plenty of creamy smoke with leathery,
chocolatey, earthy and herby aromas. Delicately spicy and fruity,

Die grobe Textur und das ölige Deckblatt suggerieren, dass diese Zigarre
einen kühnen Geschmack hat. Ähnliches verspricht schon der Name
Cojonu, was soviel wie Kraft und Schneid bedeutet. Würzig, stark,
aber zugleich subtil, entfaltet diese Toro einen komplexen Charakter.
The rough texture and oily wrapper with no visible veins suggests
that the cigar will be bold in flavor. Well so does the name, Cojonu,
which suggests force and literally means ‚balls‘. Spicy, strong, but
refined, this is a Toro with a lot of character.

An immaculately produced, very tightly rolled Lonsdale with a
wonderful pigtail. It draws magnificently. Its roast and earth aromas
harmonize with the cocoa and coffee notes, which are highlighted

Die exzellent verarbeitete Großzigarre setzt in den ersten Zügen
vor allem Holz- und hier speziell Zedernaromen frei. Danach wird
sie zunehmend würziger. Insgesamt eine eher milde Zigarre, die
gegen Schluss ein bisschen mehr an Kraft gewinnt.

The Robusto, with its impressive ring gauge, is encased in a blackbrown wrapper, exquisitely rolled and draws to perfection. It impresses with its fine spicy aromas, with a pinch of pepper at the
start that later disappears, and its nutty aromas. Medium strength.
