Die Hör-, Sprech- und Lesekompetenz rund um einen
Weihnachtsbrauch trainieren (Klassen 7 und 8)

I
n der Weihnachtszeit hängt in vielen englischsprachigen
Haushalten ein Mistelzweig im Türrahmen. Was hat es
mit dieser Planze und dem bekannten Weihnachtsbrauch
kissing under the mistletoe auf sich?
In einem Gruppenpuzzle informieren sich die Schüler in
kurzen Texten rund um die Mistel und tragen das Wichtigste zusammen.

Auch ansonsten geht es weihnachtlich zu: In einem Spot
the difference-Bilderrätsel wenden die Schüler Weihnachtsvokabular an und üben die Bildbeschreibung. Und mit Justin
Biebers Song „Mistletoe“ trainieren sie ihr Hörverstehen.
Küssen unter dem Mistelzweig

kombinierten Lesetext aus M 2–4 „All about mistletoe“ (CD 17). Trainieren Sie
dann das Hörverstehen anhand des Songs (M 6).

peace. When enemies met under a tree with mistletoe
on it, they threw down their weapons3, embraced4
and stopped fighting.
There is also an old Viking story about mistletoe – ask
a classmate about it!
Some people believe that mistletoe is lucky: If
a couple kiss under it, they will have a long,
happy marriage5. If a single girl is not kissed
under the mistletoe, she will stay single for
another year. You can also put some mistletoe
under your pillow6 at night: In your sleep you
will see the man or woman of your dreams!

Tasks
1. Read the text. Together with other pupils who have read the same text write down
about 20 key words to remember what it says. Don’t write whole sentences!
2. Fold this piece of paper over so that you can’t see the text. Meet with two other
pupils who have read different texts. Take your list of key words
with you. Ask the other pupils:
a) Why does mistletoe grow on trees? How does it get there?
b) Does it kill the trees? Why (not)?
c) What story did the Vikings tell about mistletoe?
Now the others ask you questions about your text.

In English speaking countries there is a custom1 of
hanging up mistletoe in doorways in December. If
someone is standing under the mistletoe, you are
allowed to kiss him or her. Nobody really knows where
this custom comes from, but of course there are some
theories!

Die Schüler festigen und erweitern ihr Weihnachtsvokabular und tauschen mündlich Informationen über die Mistelplanze aus.
Einstieg
Projizieren Sie die Folie „It’s Christmas time!“ M 1. Die Schüler beschreiben die Szene.
Bieten Sie je nach Leistungsstand der Klasse die Formulierungshilfen auf der Folie mit an
oder decken Sie sie ab. Notieren Sie neue Wörter bzw. Weihnachtsvokabular (siehe
unterstrichene Wörter im Erwartungshorizont) entweder an der Tafel oder mit abwaschbarem Stift auf der Folie. Die Schüler übertragen die Wörter in ihr Vokabelheft.
Wichtig: Notieren Sie sowohl „the three kings“ als auch „the three wise men“, da beide
Ausdrücke in der folgenden Stunde benötigt werden.

Die Informationstexte M 2, M 3 und M 4 werden als Gruppenpuzzle genutzt. Teilen Sie
die Klasse in drei möglichst gleich große Gruppen ein. Die Mitglieder jeder Gruppe
erhalten entweder Text A, Text B oder Text C. Erklären Sie task 1: “Read the text that
I’ve given you. When all the pupils in your group have inished, agree on the 20 most
important words that will help you remember the text. Every pupil needs to write down
these key words on a piece of paper. Write 20 words, not 20 expressions! For example
‘hang up mistletoe’ is three words.” Kontrollieren Sie, ob jeder Schüler eine Liste mit
Schlüsselwörtern besitzt.
Differenzierung: Die Texte sind durch ihre Länge unterschiedlich schwierig. Teilen Sie
schwächeren Schülern den kürzesten Text (M 2) aus.
