Jeni has moved to Taiwan with her son Matthew to take up a teaching position within our Nursery due to us expanding our provision. Jeni has worked at TES before, she left just over 3 years ago, so welcome back Jeni! She will be leading the Sea Horse Class. Thank you for responding to my mini questionnaire about the most preferred starting time of our parent workshops. The result of this was that the preferred starting time for parent workshops is 1pm with 47% of the votes. 44% of you said you preferred 8:15, nobody voted for the 3:30 starting time, and 8% stated that they would prefer evening workshops. With these statistics in mind, Miss Rumjaun and I are now planning 2 Maths workshops. They will take place at 1pm on Friday 14th January and Friday 21st January— more details will follow. A couple of reminders: Foundation Stage Sports Morning—Wednesday 17th November (Nursery and Reception) Key Stage 1 Sports Morning—Thursday 18th November (Year 1 and 2) Reverse Christmas Tree—Thursday 2nd December (details to follow soon) Foundation Stage Christmas Show—Friday 3rd December at 11am (Nursery and Reception) Key Stage 1 Christmas Show—Monday 6th December at 1pm (Year 1 and 2) Christmas Parties—Friday 17th December (all year groups) Best wishes Ruth Martin, Head of the British Infant Section. Year 1 returned from our half-term break and soared into our new topic “Mountains and Motorways”. This topic is a celebration of Taiwan rich in fun geography and history objectives. The children eagerly worked to complete a paper Mache representation of Taiwan. They labelled the surrounding oceans, and North, East, South, and West. They marked key cities around the island such as Hualien and Kenting. These will be featured along with many other great works of art at the end of our topic when we transform our classrooms into real museums! Ivan and Jonathan work with Miss Lee to make an island. Did you know the children have Plan, Do, Review every Thursday? Your child has the opportunity to independently select activities to do during this special time. After PDR, the children can discuss the activities they did and explain why they liked it or what they enjoyed the most. We have a post box that the children use to write letters to teachers and friends. We have a lot of fun delivering the mail at the end of our PDR sessions. Nicole and Russell deliver mail to BICW. Helpful Homework Hints for Parents The early years of your child’s education are important for establishing sound life long study routines. Here are a few hints that may help you during homework time each day. Set aside a regular study time. Be sure to allow time for after-school fun. Students need a break from academics before jumping right into homework. Create a quiet well-lit environment. Call it the Homework Corner or Study Center. Prepare supplies and resources keeping them in the same place. Create a Homework bin. Nate proudly displays his Scarecrow. It was hard work! Allocate a time for homework. Decide on goals together that must be accomplished. Children thrive within a framework of consistency. Following homework routines will help reduce pressure and make homework time an enjoyable experience. Dear Parents, Students and Friends of the school, I hope you all had an enjoyable half-term break although, if like me you stayed in Taipei, the weather left a lot to be desired. I think most of the children were glad to be back in school. Pirate Day The sound of clashing swords and rousing singing rang out on Wednesday as Year 5 held a ‘Pirate Day’. Bearded, scarred and bejeweled pirates in Mrs Turner’s class entertained us with their version of the classic novel Treasure Island - a story of skullduggery and treasure. A big thank you must go to parents for the wonderful costumes. Tribe Merit System Congratulations to the members of Rukai Tribe who have collected the most merit points since the beginning of the school year - 1116 merits so far. We had a very exciting assembly last Friday during which the Tribe Golden Cup was unveiled. Each half-term merit totals will be calculated and the winning tribe’s colours will be tied to the cup, which will be displayed in the atrium. Do come and look at the display (in the area next to the elevator in the atrium) all about our student council and tribe system. In the next fortnight classes will be looking at the issue of bullying and children have been invited to enter a competition to promote anti-bullying details of which have been emailed to parents. Reminders: Tuesday 16th November 8:10am - 9:00am: B6MF Class Assembly Thursday 18th November 4:40pm - 8:30pm : Choir, Orchestra & Rock band attend Flora Expo opening Friday 19th November: Children wear blue to school to show support for anti-bullying Friday 3rd December; Choir to attend ECCT Christmas luncheon Have a good weekend Kind regards Adele Corry Head of British Junior Section [email protected] Tel: (02) 8145 9007 Ext 1500 The Mysterious Thief One sunny day, Mr. Bossy Bo was sitting on his bright green chair thinking of a new formula for his Choo-Choo bars. Around the factory there were bright and colourful walls with glimmering windows. Even though there were many loud noisy machines, every worker in the factory worked quietly and busily. There were two workers working with the Gobster (the candy making machine). One was young Tom and the other was young David. They both had similar personalities as they were both intelligent and hard working. At the opposite side of the Gobster machine was the cashier. The strange looking cashier was named Figgymiggyshoein, but every one just called him Mr. Bill. He was indeed very unique to every other worker in the factory because of his appearance. He wore a black and light turquoise mask like the WWE champion Rey Mysterio. He was strange!! At the side of the cashier was some more computers and equipment which was used to make candy for the rest of the workers in the factory. Back at Mr. Bill’s office, he was still thinking of the formula until all of his workers gathered around him to tell of an old, bald man and what had just happened at the gigantic Gobster. MADNESS!! “Mr. Bossy Bo, the Gobster has bee making strange shapes.” “We all reckon that the Goster shape making machine has broke.” Said young Tom and Young David together as all the other workers came in the office to check out what’s bee happening at the office. “This must not continue, we should down the main power and check the Gobster,” demanded Mr. Bossy Bo as he sat down on his chair, continuing thinking of the new formula. “This is driving me mad,” whispering to himself. The main power went off. The poor workers had to carry flashlights. After two hours the Gobster was finally fixed and the workers started to work again. “Mr. Bossy Bo, some of the cash is missing,” whispered Mr. Bill. “How much?” asked Mr. Bossy Bo. “About fifteen million,” whispered Mr. Bill. “How much?” asked Mr. Bossy Bo rubbing his ears in disbelief. “This is madness!” he shouted, almost shattering the windows and the workers almost flew out of their own muddy boots! Mr. Bill was stunned by the voice he heard. That afternoon, every worker worked very quietly and patiently. That day the workers did not fuss if they did not do everything correctly our finish reports they needed to hand in to Mr. Bossy Bo. After that day, no one got paid. The next day, all of the workers came in the front gate of the factory with a very angry face. They opened the front door and there was a catastrophe!! All the sweets had fallen to the ground, spreading on the floors waiting for the cleaners to clean the mess. All of the factory walls had been painted black by an amateur painter with all different types of graffiti which said “Mr. Loser Lo” and “Gobster?” There were also some other very negative words. The Gobster was originally multi-coloured, painted by the world class painter Mona Lisa, but now some no-mannered person painted it black and white. But the colour was not the worst of it, it was how it had been used. The magnificent machine had turned to some kind of junkyard metal that had been squashed by the transformer Optimus Prime. The machine clinged and clanged. Everyone was shocked by the mob scene. Mr. Bossy Bo climbed up on top of the Gobster and told everyone “Don’t worry.” He then scratched his head and told everyone to find this evil thief! The police came in a few minutes after the workers had cleaned up. “Check the security camera,” demanded the police chief. Young David and Young Tom went to the security room which had an AUTHORIZED PEOPLE ONLY sign on the door. The brothers looked at the screen carefully and told the boss to come and check it out. After a few seconds in the security room, all three of them came out and Mr. Bossy Bo said the workers could have a twenty minutes break. Most of the workers went to the 7-11 next to the factory to have their lunch. At the 7-11, they met a very strange person wearing a Rey Mysterio mask. All the workers suspected that this guy must have ruined the factory. The workers quickly kidnapped him by putting a sack over his head. After a struggle they bought him back to the boss, who immediately called the police and he was arrested! After the police took the troublemaker away, the boss went into his office, shut the door and pulled the blinds, which he had never done before. May workers were very curious. They heard a loud “BANG BANG” and all of the sudden, the workers froze wondering who did it?? MASON LEE B6MS Year 6 Trip To Wulai On Thursday, 4th November, Year 6 went on a field trip to Wulai. We stopped at Feitsui reservoir on the way, where we had a chance to see the amazing dam there. We have been learning about the impact of humans on rivers, so it was interesting to see a real-life example of this. After lunch, we visited the spectacular Wulai waterfall. As it has been raining a lot recently, we were lucky to see the waterfall in its full glory. We enjoyed watching the water cascading down the waterfall into the river below. We’d like to take this opportunity to thank all of the parents who come along with us and made it such an enjoyable day. There was a lot of interest in the positions and many children decided that they would like to take part. Unfortunately only one representative from each class could be chosen. We would like to thank all of the children who volunteered for the positions and bravely gave speeches and presentations. Each class completed a secret vote and the new Tribe Councilors were introduced to the Junior School in our assembly this week. We would like to congratulate the following students on their new roles and look forward to seeing the improvements they are planning on, to make our TES community an even better place. Dear Parents, New books are here at the Infant Library!
