The Ruhr area boasts some of the best football clubs in Europe. Sure enough, one of them is in Bochum - the VFL
Bochum. Don't miss the opportunity to watch a a match just around the corner.
Over 30 sports possibilities can be taken on by the students of the
the University of Applied Sciences. If you prefer
culture, you might want to find out about 'boSKop', a student initiative, with a large portfolio of cultural events and
seminars. Some concerts might show you a completely new side to the Germans!
Much fun forr only little money? Absolutely! A lunch in the canteen is just about €2.00
2.00 - €3.00 and you can rent a
room in a student hall for €200 - €290 per month. The students at Hochschule Bochum may use all buses and trains
of the regional transport operator with the semester ticket. The semester ticket is valid 24 hours a
day, during the semester as well as in the semester holidays. The ticket is your student ID. So do try out this
excellent network!
On Lennershofstraße in the city’s Green Belt, the University of Applied Sciences can be reached easily by public
transport and motorway (A43). It benefits from its close proximity to technology centre in the Ruhr-University area.
The Ruhr Region
The Ruhr megaplex is a polycentric agglomeration with
5.3 million people from 140 different countries. It forms
the thriving center of North Rhine Westphalia at the
heart of Europe. Since the sixties the Ruhr
R
Metropolis
has developed into one of the most intense scientific
landscapes in Europe. Whether one begins a foray along
the river Ruhr from the west in Duisburg, from the East
in Dortmund or from the middle in Bochum the region
demonstrates how it drawss on its rich resources. It is a
creative pool of ideas with a multicultural background
for research and development. Because of its closeness

to the people and its intensive links with companies, science has become an integral part of society. The region
boasts one of the most concentrated scientific networks in Germany

with six
universities, twelve universities
versities of applied sciences, two university of art, four
Fraunhofer, four Leibniz and three Max-Planck
Max Planck institutes as well as numerous other
non-university
university research institutions. Scientists from the region’s research institutions
are today among the best in Germany and indeed the world. Innovative
developments in nano and plasmatechnology, energy production and logistics,
characterize the current research profile
profile of the region, as do the modern information
technologies and lifesciences. Comprehensive research into the economic and
societal change processes also show us the roots of the Ruhr scientific region.
Numerous collaborations and centers of excellence in different fields of research link
the institutions seamlessly with each other while international cooperation projects and transfer within the worldwide
research community are the order of the day. Internal solidarity and openness to the outside world influence

competition.

Portrait of the University
and Management
The University of Applied Sciences, founded in 1972, is a modern
university specialising in technology, engineering, construction, and
business management. Its concept of offering fast-track,
fast
studentoriented degree courses that are closely linked to the companies
c
in
the Ruhr region gives our university the cutting edge. Since the
professors and teaching staff at the University of Applied Sciences all
worked in the manufacturing or service sectors, they maintain a
close link with the worlds of manufacturing and business. This
relationship has resulted in research partnerships, PHD projects, joint
development projects or excellent work placements for our students.
The 7000 students currently enrolled at the University of Applied
Sciences study in one of the
e six faculties, namely architecture, civil
engineering,
electrical
engineering,
mechanical
engineering
(including mechatronics), geodesy and business management. They
actively participate in industrial research and problem-solving
problem
projects. The ‘Transfer Prizes’, donated by prestigious companies from the region (Adam Opel, Siemens-Nixdorf,
Siemens
VEBA Immobilien, Deutsche Bank, HDI, etc.) are awarded for outstanding student achievement. For many awardaward
winning students, this proof of innovation is the key to a successful
suc
career.
No theory without practice
In most of the courses of study a placement semester is included in the final stage. Theses are often written on the
basis of concrete problem settings within a company. Often these companies then are the first employers after the
university studies.

for our students.
Internationality
Globalization requires graduates with skills such as foreign languages, or the experience of having studied and/or
worked abroad. Hochschule Bochum believes that higher education and training must incorporate a strong
international dimension enhancing those skills. We are convinced that the cooperation between academic institutions
in a large number of foreign countries contributes to a better intercultural understanding based on an increased
awareness and knowledge of other cultures and social behavior.
Hochschule Bochum is, therefore, a member of the 'European Association for International Education´ (EAIE) and `The
Network of International Business Schools' (NIBS). NIBS is a group of business schools from around the world firmly
believing that the internationalization of business and the globalization of the economy are essential elements in the
evolution of managerial practices. Building on its extensive range of contacts in Europe, Australia, America and Asia,
Hochschule Bochum has developed a portfolio of international courses. International cooperation advance student
exchanges, which are an essential aspect of a graduate’s international education. Our students are awarded the
Bachelor of Arts or the Master of Arts when they finish.
