Talcott Parsons` Wanderjahre in Europa
Talcott Parsons’ Wanderjahre in Europa 1. Project summary This project contributes to the study of history of sociology and examines the early and foundational contribution of the most influential sociologist of the 20th century: Talcott Parsons (1902-1979). This research project is specifically focused upon Talcott Parsons' stay at the University of Heidelberg (1925-26). It was at this time that he composed his dissertation in its German-language form that to this day is still unpublished. A translation into English is to be accompanied by a reconstruction of the history of this work and a critical exegesis of Parsons' understanding of the work of Max Weber. Talcott Parsons' study-years in Europe and his confrontation with the works of Karl Marx, Werner Sombart and Max Weber prepared him for further study in the 1930s of Emile Durkheim, Vilfredo Pareto and Georg Simmel. What he achieved in his doctoral studies was of utmost importance for Parsons' further intellectual orientation. However, in this project we want to show how this phase of Parsons’ intellectual development was of far-reaching consequences for the development of sociology as a scientific discipline in the United States but also for Europe. In his rejection of positivism and utilitarianism in favour of a ‘voluntaristic’ theory of action he made a significant scientific and theoretical contribution to American society. We are therefore concerned to identify how American society and the "American ethos" (Gerhardt 2011) is presupposed by his theoretical system. Our aim is to clarify the significance of the European roots of modern society that Parsons has sought to uncover in his early work. In terms of methodology, this project will not only include the translation of Parsons’ dissertation into English language, but will examine personal notes and correspondence with his supervisors and mentors at that time. Visits at library-archives at Harvard University, London School of Economics and Heidelberg University are planned. Additionally, a number of distinguished Talcott Parsons biographers from the USA, Germany and Austria have agreed to support the project with their knowledge and expertise as members of an advisory panel. Our intention is to publish a bi-lingual version of Talcott Parsons’ dissertation. We hope to publish reports and analyses in international journals on sociology and history of social theory. There are also implications for academic teaching at university level in courses examining "classics of sociology". Moreover, the researchers (from Austria and Australia) with members of the advisory panel will invite other experts in social theory to meet at a concluding symposium where findings will be presented and discussed. This project is compatible with applied research and aims to offer a fresh perspective in many policy fields, providing clarification of a heuristic framework based on Parsons’ ‘voluntaristic' conception of social action in contrast to the ‘rational choice’ perspective.
